On average, this drive sees 150MB/s reads and 100MB/s writes. This is pretty good for a 7200rpm drive. I will definitely update this in the future if this unexpectedly fails.
Having said that; This is my first ever destructive failure. I plugged the HDD into a powered down, unplugged, PC with static all removed with a wrist cable.
I then booted the machine into linux to format the drive and it wouldn't show up in fdisk. I re-opened the case and got smacked in the face with melted plastic smell and despair. The sata sable is melted at the drive end, and the drive connectors themselves are melted (as shown in the picture)
If that wasn't bad enough... That port on my PSU is now useless. I plugged a fresh sata power cable into the port and it does nothing.
I have put in for a refund, but save yourself the hassle and skip this batch of HDDs. I will be tweeting at seagate to see if they have any idea how to make good on this. Otherwise all of my future purchases will be with Samsung or WD.
Time to boot Windows 7 past the welcome screen:
Old 5900 RPM HDD= 1 min 15 secs
New 7200 RPM HDD= 50 secs (33% faster)
Time to start a game (GTA5) and connect to a multiplayer server:
Old 5900 RPM HDD= 3 min 32 secs
New 7200 RPM HDD= 3 min 15 secs (8% faster)
These differences are noticeable, but nowhere near as drastic as the speed increase you'd get from purchasing a solid state drive. This is one of the best valued HDD's in the market as of right now; if you're waiting for overpriced SSD's to become a more realistic price, this hard drive should serve you well before you make the leap.
I have chosen to instead get two 2TB hard drives, as that at least rules out certain incompatibilities I have heard of.
Speeds are good for a mechanical drive. You get a big burst speed writing to it then it will slow down. So really large files definitely take longer than an SSD but for say 5GB transfers it’s fairly negligible due to buffer. On larger files it will slow from burst speeds of 300-400MB/s down to 170MB/s or so. Slower if lots of smaller files. Obviously a huge difference from 550MB/s of a good SSD drive or 1400MB/s of a good NVMe drive but this is after all just a storage drive.
Price is great, solid performance, nice and quiet. No complaints here! If it were for any kind of proper backup drive I’d go for WD reds or similar but just for storing movies, tv shows or as an extra backup for your tablets/laptops etc it does the job nicely.

Order a replacement, replacement gets delivered 3 days later in torn up packaging held together with rubber bands. Connect the drive again, Windows disk management asks to intialize drive, click initialize, fails with IO error. Boot linux live distro, with the SATA cable from my Crucial SSD connected to this drive on the off chance the cable was bad. Gnome disks can't initialize the drive, gparted fails to scan drive and complains about IO errors. Disconnected and repackaged it, now contemplating next move.
Edit: Ended up taking it up to seagate customer service, RMAed it, they gave me a new hard drive, with warranty, delivered in a properly cushioned box. Using it for 5 months now, no issues yet.
Got it 2 times n received defective
But they r telling its a suspicious activity by me
Dont ever buy this product here
Now telling that refund of money will be late
They have got people who does suspicious activity inside but they r claiming on me
Very bad service
I added this HDD to my Synology NAS box and while it was being added I registered the HDD to find the warranty was voided/ ended in 2019.
I contacted Seagate who said that the drive had been removed from an external case which voided the warrant. Luckily for me, Seagate was willing to honour the warranty and said they will be in contact with Amazon to find out what is going on.
I contacted Amazon (who were the sellers) and basically got fobbed off with just a £10 goodwill gesture and a promise they will look into it.
