I went through three WD passports in 15 months or so. Each time they would just not work. I couldn't reformat, no computer could access them. An absolute nightmare. Luckily I have had this for a while now as my second backup and have had no problems. I own two of these and am very happy with them. I recommend this over the passport any day. It is what it says it is, a portable external HD.

The data transfer speed are between 10-15 mbps, expectation is more from a USB 3.0 drive.
Good for home use to store pics, movies and songs. I use it as my personal movie storage connected to the TV.
Never got any problems... though while transferring data, its a bit frustrating

I've always been a fan of Seagate and although I've used WD, I prefer Seagate due to the warranty and after sales service. I am still using it after a year or so and I can't complain about this product.

Pros:
1. Size
2. Built quality, warranty and after sales service if you get into trouble

Cons:
1. Price - I won't blame them here, but the portable HDD prices were quite high that time
2. Speed - I didn't find the USB 3.0 speed as good as what I've found with other devices with USB 3.0 port

If you are not a big HD movie editing guy, 1TB is huge! I used it for Time Machine (MBP mid-2010 OS X 10.7) and I filled with tons of medias. still 600GB free! You obviousvly have to format the drive to HFS+ on Mac, but it comes ready for Windows (NTFS). One last thing... sooooooo fast with FireWire 800 adapter!

I bought this Hard drive to back up my IMac. It was very simple to setup, just plug it in say yes when the window pops up to confirm you want to use it as your Time Machine back up and away you go. I would recommend you buy the firewire or USB 3.0 cable adapter if you are backing up a big quantity of video to speed up the backup process but 2.0 does work well, just a lot slower. Price point was excellent value as well. Very good purchase!

This is the second time I have purchased a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB. It meets my needs perfectly. I travel often and want to have all my documents with me and accessible. I keep this Seagate plugged in to my main computer, my home desktop. The initial backup took many hours because the desktop includes a large photo collection. The backup duplicated the file structure on my desktop. When I create a new document, upload a photo, or modify a document, the Seagate backs it up immediately in the file where I place it. When I travel, I can bring the Seagate, plug it into my laptop with a USB, and access all my files just as I would on my desktop. Perfect! After several years of using my previous Seagate drive that was identical to this one, I damaged the connection and it was not fully reliable anymore. Initially, I purchased a newer, less expensive version of the Seagate backup drive (Seagate Backup Plus Slim). However, it backed up my files in zip drives and then added a new folder for each day when I used it after the initial backup. It didn't work for my travel needs, although I think it would have been fine for back up only, in case my main computer crashed. It just didn't do what I wanted. The FreeAgent GoFlex is an older and more expensive version and seems to be getting phased out. I hope that isn't true. It provides much more functionality than the Slim (which I now use just for photo backup).

Say "NO!" To Sucky Hard Drives

Holy Sweet Lord in Heaven! This thing sucks!!! Now I've used Seagate before, and generally speaking (as long as you don't drop it) they make pretty good external hard drives. But they dropped the ball with this one. Looking at the picture, you would think that all you needed as a little cord to plug the hard drive into your computer, and you're good to go. FALSE!!! They have an adapter that connects the cord to the hard drive. I'm pretty sure that if you remove the adapter, you can hook it up to Seagate's home cloud (or whatever it is where you can access your hard drive via wifi). THAT is what you're getting.

For the first few months, I had no problems with it. Than it couldn't read it, and said it had to be reconfigured. My brilliant self said "alright sure whatever." Well, in order for a hard drive to reconfigure itself, it deletes all data on the drive. I lost so much, it's truly ridiculous. It's happened two or three times since, and I move all my stuff by splitting it between my other hard drive and my computer. Than (and only than) do I reconfigure.

Also, it's very fickle. About half the time I plug it in, it runs great. No worries. The other half, not so much. Your computer will make the sound when you connect something to it. Than it will make the sound when you disconnect something. It will do this back and forth, hooked up, unhooked repeatedly until you disconnect it and try another port. Than it might work. By the way, this will lead to you have to reconfigure the hard drive.

Now the current price today is $260 plus. I bought it on sale for about $120. I would never pay either price again for this product.

Great portable external hard drive that can take some abuse. This 1tb hard drive has the space you need for a great price, is plug-and-play technology that doesn't require any installation (unless you want to use the backup service).

The shell on the hard drive is very durable because I constantly was throwing this into a weekend bag and taking it with me and it only had minor scratches on it. Plus the drive itself didn't suffer or become damaged in any way.

The part where the USB cable connects to the hard drive feels week and like it could snap (thankfully it hasn't) although the danger is always there. If you do travel with this hard drive make sure you unplug the USB cable to prevent any mishaps.

As a storage device this product worked wonderfully. I didn't not have a need for the backup software (as it usually is slow, bloated, and process heavy). I did not use the software included with the hard drive and cannot comment in it.

Good 1TB Hard drive with USB 3.0 technology for fast transfer speeds. Does what is needed.

The hard drive itself is small, light, and very portable. As soon as I hooked it up I was able to run the software on my mac and it prompted me through the HD setup, it was very quick and easy. Upon connecting it to my mac there was 999GB's of free space because of the software on it, which is proving to be plenty of space for me. I have another HD thats from Toshiba, a 320GB HD purchased about a year ago, and found that the transfer rates on my new Seagate seemed to be a lot faster. Now, I may just be imagining things, but my macbook pro doesn't have USB 3.0, so I'm not sure but it does seem to transfer about twice as fast.

The only problem I encountered with this HD is that the included software allowed me to format the HD into a FAT32 or NTFS drive. Since I have files over 4GB I would continuously run into the issue with my Toshiba HD (which is FAT32), of error 0 on my Mac which doesn't allow me to transfer files over 4GB. This was quite a pain, so I decided to format my new HD to NTFS. It gave me the option during the initial setup, but once it was complete I was unable to write to the HD only read it, I guess Macs haven't added support for NTFS in Mac OS 10.6.8 yet (which in my opinion is pretty stupid because of how widely used NTFS is in transferring files to Windows computers, and the larger file cap). As annoying as this was, it was quickly remedied by going to Download.com and downloading "NTFS-3G" for mac. It is free software so don't bother paying for it from someone else.

I am now able to read and write to the HD, although I've only had it for a few days it seems to be working fine. I highly recommend this hard drive, it is by far the least expensive. Currently at Best Buy this same hard drive is $139.99, I bought it for $93 and it was tax free as well as free shipping (plus I had amazon gift cards and points bringing my total down to $60), that's even better than the discount my girlfriend gets for working at Best Buy (she gets items at cost + a small percent). All in all if you need something extremely portable and with plenty of space, buy this hard drive!

So easy to use. This is my second one. My first one is almost full and I have had the original for more than 3 years and it is still going strong. Makes sharing files so simple and easy. Example, pictures. I will download from my SD card to my computer, attach the GoFlex, backup the pictures, disconnect from my computer, send the GoFlex home with a family member, they attach the GoFlex to their computer and they now have those pictures. We can also share music or any other file we want to share. It is my favorite backup system because it is so easy to use. I bought the second one because they are getting hard to find and I like this particular model.
