This set of DVD’s includes the first three James Bond movies ever made, all starring Sean Connery.
Set essentially in Jamaica, “Doctor No” was undoubtedly a hit in 1962. Unfortunately, it now clearly shows signs of age and is way below today’s television shows in complexity and suspense (let alone technical aspects). In fact, characters are unidimensional and the plot worthy of a comic book. Female protagonists are all secondary though they have minimal careers, as secretaries or shell divers. Some black actors have speaking parts, what is better than for most American movies of the times, but they hold on to superstitious and almost child-like beliefs, for instance that a flame-throwing tank is a monstrous dragon.
If “Doctor No” may be considered the pilot for the James Bond series, “From Russia with Love” that came out the following year is truly the first episode. Its twisting plot is quite developed, and its characters relatively fleshed out. Here, unexpectedly, one of the main villains is a bright female. Locations include exotic places like Istanbul, Venice and a night train with individual sleeping compartments. Action scenes involve among many things a helicopter and a boat race.
“Goldfinger” is the set’s third movie. Its plot is extravagantly convoluted and, as “Doctor No”, essentially centred on a single villain. The main locations, Miami Beach and Kentucky, are not very striking and the level of violence is paramount, including mass killings. Though it certainly required the highest budget, it is far less compelling than the previous two.
Overall, this offering is recommended to all who wish to better understand the “James Bond” phenomenon.

Connery was the best Bond. Par none! Great to watch movies made before CGI. You can see the green screen lines behind the actors especially in the car scenes. You always no what is real. Entertaining. Brought back memories.

I have a special fondness for these early Bond movies - yes, I know they fail Bechtel tests, are inappropriate by today's standards, but... were they ever meant to be taken seriously in the first place? Really? I never did.
I dare you to enjoy the exotic locations of yester-century, fancy clothes, cigarette smoke, drinking, gambling, generally loose behavior, terrible 'pun' names, and watching everything else that the fictional characters of that era could get away with. These are guilty pleasure movies to be certain.

The movies need no review. What’s important is how well done the remastering of these movies have been. I am watching them on a Sony 4K bluray player on a 4K OLED screen. The picture looks flawless. The films have been remastered using original copies of the film frame by frame and the effort the studio did shows. If you have these movies on DVD it is worthwhile upgrading to this set.
