Searching For Sugar Man is a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music. In the late '60s, two celebrated producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics discovered a musician in a Detroit bar. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon. Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. This soundtrack consists of a selection of songs featured in the film but originally found on Rodriguez's records Cold Fact and Coming From Reality.

It is fantastic and thoughtful music, no question about it. His story is incredible, but the great music to go along with it is what makes Searching For Sugar Man the most memorable new "old music" out there today.
I find curious that many people, including in the documentary, compares him with Dylan... and he can be compared to him, as so many other artists who were influenced by Bob, but to me Rodriguez's music style comes closer to those first albums by Leonard Cohen: the guitar with spanish influences, the lush orchestrations coming in and out mysteriously and his vocal delivery (and even though Cohen was influenced by Dylan, their music styles are quite different).
Lyrically, Rodriguez uses words and terms to describe feelings and situations that are easy to understand, and yet so poetic... example: "the sweetest kiss I ever got was the one I've never tasted" (Cause) or "For a blue coin won't you bring back all those colors to my dreams" (Sugar Man)... So you know exactly what he's talking about and yet so beautifully said.
I also like to review the packaging, I think people who keep buying CDs enjoy that aspect too, or they would simply download it from itunes.
On this release you'll be getting a nicely illustrated booklet with plenty of photographs from Rodriguez personal collection, as well as all the lyrics to the songs. Technical information is also there.
You need to have this music in your collection !
Rodriguez is a treasure that has been unburied for the world to finally enjoy.
In my opinion this sountrack is made of a very good selection of Rodriguez's songs from his two released albums + his unfinished album. Rodriguez's music and lyrics reflect his genius. How on earth this guy remained unknown despite making those two albums in the 70s is beyond my understanding. I am grateful that South Africans had a better taste of music than North Americans of the time so 40 years after Rodriguez releasing those albums, he is now a celebrity in North America too and we are able to find his CDs in the stores.

Sugar Man was a great artist. It is too bad that he ended like he did. His music let you feel what he feels showing his artistic genius. Read morePublished 5 months ago by John J. Drozd
