The Gansett Island Series, Book 6

His idea of permanence is the VW van that takes him from one gig to the next. . .

Owen Lawry has made a living as a traveling musician and enjoys his footloose and fancy free lifestyle. But after meeting Laura McCarthy and helping her to land the job as manager of his grandparents' hotel on Gansett Island, Owen decides there's something to be said about a roof over his head and a warm, sexy woman in his bed.

Laura, a newlywed who discovered that her husband never quit dating, came to Gansett for her cousin Janey's wedding, but ended up staying after she met Owen and took on the renovations to the dilapidated Sand & Surf Hotel.

As Owen and Laura's attraction simmers during months of close proximity, they form a tight bond that will be tested when her estranged husband refuses to grant her a divorce. As summer turns to autumn and Laura and Owen take baby steps toward love, favorite characters from past Gansett Island stories continue to live their happily ever afters.

HASH(0xa9034c78) out of 5 stars Disappointed - but not enough to give up on the series July 8 2012

I feel so guilty giving this only two stars, but it just didn't work for me.

*~*~* beware of spoilers *~*~*

I loved the main characters of the previous books in the Gansett Island series, but their sappy anecdotes in this book just interrupted the flow of the story and completely threw me out of my reading trance several times.

Anyone who hasn't read the other books in the series will have NO clue who these people are, and it's a waste of exposition to give us their backstories. Readers like me who have devoured the previous books already know that McCarthys & Friends have the most romantic, sex-filled marriages ever, and one book for each couple is enough.

And then we get more Tiffany and Blaine. And now Carolina and Seamus. And now Dan and Kara. And soon Jenny and whoever (probably Adam). It's just too many couples to keep track of, and I don't want to have to choose which chapters to skip.

I'm also getting very frustrated with the continuing emphasis on the "Let's Rebound Into A New Relationship With No Downtime Whatsoever!" theme. Janey. Sydney. Laura. Tiffany. I think the tourist brochures for Gansett Island must have a tagline like "Where Fabulous Single Men Appear Out Of Nowhere Whenever A Damsel In Distress Needs One."

Laura and Owen actually do discuss "she can't live without a man" (a thought planted by the Evil Ex-Husband), but it's quickly glossed over and forgotten. As a divorced single parent, I get *really* tetchy reading romances that ignore the struggle for self-esteem and self-sufficiency or treat it as an afterthought.

I'm also confused about Jenny the Lighthouse Keeper. We get an entire chapter of her sob story at the beginning, and then she's reduced to cameo appearances in two throwaway scenes. I know it's setting her up for her own storyline, but why include the tragic backstory here? And a "Tell Us Your Life Story" essay question might be believable for a college application, but not for a job.

I'm not ready to give up on this series yet, but I hope the next installment features more relationship building and less soap opera.

HASH(0xa90456f0) out of 5 stars Too much review June 26 2012

I have read books 1-5 and I really enjoyed all of them, except for this one. I really didn't like Owen and Laura - their story was the least exciting for me. I love the way she describes the island life, the other couples lives. Most of the stories are interesting and event though a little predictable and mushy - they are fun to read.
The only thing that bothers me a little about the series is that by the time you reach book 5, the author has repeated everyones story for review sake like 20 times and you get tired of hearing it over and over. I understand that for those that read these as stand alone books, you have to make sure that they are caught up, but it does effect the story line. When you couple that up with the redundant love making scenes, 50% of the book is review and boring love scenes.

So what to do? NO idea, I'm not a writer. I think she has to change her writing style a little to keep the flow exciting. There are too many sub stories going on all the time and this book had it all. I would suggest putting the other couples on back burner, focus on the couple featured and let them shine.

Read 1-5 you'll enjoy it, zip through 6 cause it's semi boring. I'm still looking forward to #7 though.

HASH(0xa90455d0) out of 5 stars Season for love March 8 2015

Choose this rating because their was no real flow to the book.
Lots of people having sex with each other but the plot of the book gets lost with all the sex that everyone's having. I've read other books by this author and didn't fell this way. Just seems like she added all these other people in just to get another book out of the series.

HASH(0xa90456c0) out of 5 stars Cooling Weather but Hot Season! June 7 2012
By Karen Lawson - Published on Amazon.com

As summer turns to autumn the tourists begin to depart Gansett Island leaving behind just the year-round citizens. Well, the air may be starting to chill, but the relationships are heating up! This edition is Owen and Laura's story, the sixth in the McCarthys of Gansett Island Series. I guess as work slows down there is more time at home and we all know home is where the heart is! Laura McCarthy, pregnant and estranged from her jerky husband Travis, is working on getting the Sand & Surf Hotel remodeled. Owen Lawry, whose grandparents own the hotel, has been helping Laura through her bouts of morning sickness. As his love grows for Laura, he makes the decision to stay on the island over the winter to help Laura.

Not only does Ms. Force give us a great love story with these two, she also reacquaints us with all the island dwellers we have grown to love. We get to see all our favorite couples and where they are in their happily ever afters. We even meet some new characters who will someday get their own stories. There are proposals, parties, fighting and making up, a birth, and even a wedding extra at the end! Did I mention, love is blooming everywhere on Gansett Island as the temperatures are falling! Those McCarthys know how to treat their partners as Grace and Evan explain:

"Grace's lips were soft and sweet on Evan's chest as she kissed her way to his lips. "You can't understand because Big Mac McCarthy was your father, and he raised you and your brothers along with Joe and Luke to be the kind of men who worship the women they love."
"I'm ashamed to admit that I never knew how truly lucky I was to grow up the way I did until recently. Knowing what Owen went through, and you and Stephanie and Maddie... We were so very blessed."
"Yes, you were, and now some very lucky women are benefitting from the most excellent way Big Mac McCarthy raised his boys.""

For all of us that love this series, number six is another notch on our "best read" list! If you haven't started reading this series, please start at the beginning with Maid For Love and continue in order. You will not be sorry. Thank you Marie Force for another great edition in this super series!

Season for Love is the highlight of Gansett Island stories so far. The story is heart-warming and touching. The love scenes are very well written... made me wake up my husband ;)
I can't wait for the next one, I was silly enough to buy this book the minute it was published and I stayed up reading until four in the morning because I couldn't put it down. I'm a huge fan and hope Marie Force will continue her writing forever. She paints such an enticing picture of this small island community that I'd love to move to a similar place just to see if places like these really exist.
This is definitely a series which should be started from part one (Maid for Love). Buy them all and you will not be disappointed.
