Product Description

When footloose and fancy-free Jessica, a thirty-something writer, decides to follow her journalistic instincts and trace the story of a young girl for her weekly column in a Dublin newspaper, she unwittingly embarks on a journey into Northern Ireland’s tragic past.
With her love of all things vintage, Jessica Jane Baré is known as Second-hand Jane to her friends. Hailing from New Zealand, these days she’s finding the grass is greener in Dublin and not just because of all the rain. In fact, life would be sweet if it weren’t for the reason she left home in the first place–her meddling mother. Marian views Jess’s life in Dublin as nothing more than a stop-gap until she meets Mr Right and he’s taking his time. Things look set to change, however, when Jess meets the delectable Nick, who ticks all of Marian’s boxes.
In the meantime, Jess’s latest second-hand collectible–a children’s book—gives her an idea for her column. Deciding to track down the girl whose name is scribbled inside the cover of that book, she uncovers more than she ever expected. “Amy was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the girl’s taciturn brother, Owen, informs her. Intrigued, Jess travels to the family pig farm in County Down and listens to Amy’s poignant tale unfold through Owen. With a little help from a rather cute runt of the litter she names Wilbur, Jess is about to help put the past to rest and learn that appearances can be deceptive.
Then Marian announces she is coming to Dublin to sort her daughter’s increasingly tangled love life out and Jess’s chance of a happy ending like those in the story books she collects looks about as likely as Wilbur flying.

About the Author

Hi, my name’s Michelle Vernal. I’m a 42 year old, married Mum of two boys who lives in the pretty little town of Oxford located in New Zealand’s South Island. Writing is something I have always used as a way of expressing myself and my first foray into the romantic and humorous world of chick lit is recorded in my thirteen year old self’s compulsory school journal. In it, much to the delight of my English teacher, I described in minutiae the heartbreak of being dumped after my first school disco. It was a scene I re-wrote into The Brazilian Job my first novel. After my first son was born I attended a creative writing course and the first piece I ever penned was published by a New Zealand parenting magazine. I went on to write humorous, opinion styled pieces of my take on parenting but when the necessity for being politically correct got too much I set myself the challenge of writing a novel. The result was The Brazilian Job. The story opens in Dublin where my now hubby and I based ourselves back in the Millennium when the Celtic Tiger was roaring. My second novel Second-hand Jane is also set in Dublin because it provides such a character filled backdrop. We have a love of travel and starting our family in 2004 hasn’t changed that. In 2008 we crossed Argentina, Chile and Uruguay by bus with backpacks and our two boys plonked in strollers - it was fantastic. Last year we visited LA, the Greek Islands, France and Hong Kong with our boys and that has only managed to scratch the tip of the wish list. It has also given me loads of ideas for future stories.

When I first started reading this book my first thought revolved around the fact that for some reason most of the chick lit I read takes place either in the US or the UK and how refreshing it is to read about the adventures of a New Zealander living in Ireland.

The book's heroine Jessica (nicknamed Second Hand Jane because of her love of things vintage and used) is at once quirky and deep, and this duality reflects the overall tone of the book as well. Characters that appear in supporting roles are just as entertaining and interesting - her friends Brianna and Nora helping her create a home away from home in Ireland; her mom Marian, whose motherly meddling ways and persistent interest in Jessica's love life (in the hopes of seeing her daughter married off) will have you laughing out loud; Jessica's potential love suitors and finally one adorable piggy (yes, you did read that right!).

Though the story has all the elements of an easy breezy, beach style read, the subplot of Amy's story (the story which becomes a part of Jessica's column) leads both the heroine and the reader into the land of deeper introspection.

After reading this book I felt like I just took a quick and very much fun trip to Ireland, I thought quite a bit about my own relationship with my mother and I got to immerse myself into (mis)adventures of an interesting character - what's not to love. I recommend this to all chick lit lovers but especially the ones looking for a pleasant departure from the usual chick lit fare.

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say - I loved the book. It was a very entertaining read. I did find that it was predictable at times but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Second Hand Jane is a story of friendship, love and finding your place in the world. It also deals with the complexity of the mother / daughter relationship in a humorous way. If you are looking for a light, upbeat story, this is a book to check out.

HASH(0x9f0a048c) out of 5 stars A nice little romance Aug. 26 2014
By Pixie Stix - Published on Amazon.com

We have a woman who loves to shop at thrift stores, hence the title of the book. It pretty much follows the standard romance novel, with some nice humor thrown in as well. It's not a particularly profound book, but it is quite enjoyable, perfect for a rainy afternoon or a visit to renew your driver's license.

I particularly like that we don't have the hideous cliche of a villainous ex running about causing havoc (so tired of that). The main character does that just fine on her own. I also like how the main love interest talks to her. Like a grown up. They set themselves up to having an actual adult relationship. Very nice.

HASH(0x9f0a0768) out of 5 stars Unique and Amazing lovestory! June 13 2014

I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Oh what a unique and amazing love story this one turned out to be! I am seriously in love with the whole story! I love that Jessica has such a unique quality about her. In a world where everyone competes to be the same, we all need someone like her! And I identify with her love for gently used old things!

This book not only tells an amazing love story, but also the story of a tragedy that lives on in those left behind. But not only that the author is amazing with her humor and writes that side very well!

I love all the characters in this book and think that they were all developed very well. I also enjoy the time during which her Mum visits and that they both had a chance to grow and change their relationship.

And who could not fall in love with dear Wilbur! What a fantastic story this turned out to be! I highly recommend this one!

HASH(0x9f0a0c84) out of 5 stars There are no words ... June 26 2014

Nothing in the limited vocabulary of humanity would adequately describe the pleasure this book brings to its readers. Funny, heartwarming, tear-invoking and full of emotions that any and every woman can and does feel in a lifetime, is tucked between these pages. The story moves at varying and appropriate paces as it draws the reader in and through the main characters' lives with believable dialogue and events. I could not put it down and was left wanting more ... exactly what one should expect from a story worth telling. Bravo to Michelle Vernal!!

HASH(0x9f0a054c) out of 5 stars .Revolves around a child's book, a love story and a little pig!!! July 1 2014
By Elaine Bertolotti author of Florence and Me - Published on Amazon.com

The author's style of writing is quite good but the plot, or should I say plots, were weak with a lot of description of food and clothes The ending was a bit obvious! Read it if you like to hear about Ireland.
