The Secret to Happiness is a very sweet story for children to learn that happiness comes from the heart. Children will discover that there are little things you can do to make yourself happy for a time but for everlasting happiness you must follow your heart and be kind, helpful and friendly to others.

Love and happiness are wonderful things for young children to learn about and Suzy Liebermann has found a great way to present it. It is full of colorful pictures with great new friends, and a heartfelt meaning. The writing is simple and very fitting for the age range. This allows plenty of interaction time and discussion to further your child's learning and development.

HASH(0x9ab688ac) out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesson for the Whole Family April 30 2013
By Dani Sue - Published on
The Secret to Happiness is the first book from the Hugo series that I've read. I really like the artwork. It's very bold and vibrant and not too busy for a little mind. Hugo is a bright red starfish with big eyes and I think a character that a child would be easily attracted to and easily remembered. Immie is only 13 months, and although she may not understand the message in the story yet, she certainly loves to flip through the pages and look at all the images.

The message itself is a great one - Empathy. More importantly, that having empathy for others is the secret to a happy life. I love this message and it is one I want to instill in my daughter. I think the way it is written is simple enough for a child to understand, and that's really important. Hugo tries to find happiness through different material possession...only to find that it doesn't create permanent happiness. He finally finds happiness by sharing his heart with others. It's a great lesson.

I really like that there's a blank page at the end to encourage your child to think about what they've just learned and to be creative. Also, there are 12 more free activities to go along with "The Secret to Happiness"...that you can download from the website! What a fun way to teach and learn with your kiddos! Consistency is key for children, and since this is part of a series of books...Hugo's character has the ability to keep making a positive impression on young minds.

HASH(0x9ab68cb4) out of 5 stars HAPPY AT LAST! April 5 2015

Hugo is introduced as a starfish with big eyes and a big heart. His problem was that he felt sad. Hoping to get rid of this feeling, Hugo goes to visit the wise Manta who advises Hugo to search for it right here. When Hugo is unsuccessful, Manta gives him a few other suggestions like fishing, spending time with friends or searching for a treasure so he can buy anything he wants. After a period of time elapses, Hugo still feels dissatisfied so Manta finally reveals the secret of being happy forever--to share with others!

The lessons of empathy and sharing are invaluable ones, but I question the way the author depicts the ending. The illustrations are bright, colorful and appealing for young readers, but I feel the final product is a big confusing for young readers. This book can be the basis of productive discussion between parents or teachers with children.

HASH(0x9ab6a0fc) out of 5 stars Hugo Makes Us Happy July 2 2013
By Heather L. Hazen - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Hugo is a starfish navigating his way through childhood. This time he is trying to find out what makes him happy. He learns various ways from his friends and then ultimately figures out that when he shares with his friends, he is happy. It is a simple lesson, but one that is hard to instill in our toddlers. I am constantly telling my 3 year old son, that If he shares his toys, his friends will play with him AND his toys. It is slowly sinking in and I am one proud momma when he wants to take 2 toys to a playdate so that he can share with his buddy.

HASH(0x9ab6a114) out of 5 stars Learn about Happiness March 17 2013
By Nickida Stephens - Published on
I don't know the secret to happiness, and if I did what would I do with that knowledge? Well Hugo the Happy Starfish is learning from his good friend the Manta Ray the Secret to Happiness. Hugo is sad and doesn't know what to do to feel happy. So he goes on a quest and runs into his friend the Manta Ray who helps him along the way. First he wanted to be happy for an hour so he took a nap, but of course he woke up unhappy. So he wanted to know how to be happy for a day, a month a year and then finally he wanted to be happy forever. It isn't until he asks his friend about being happy forever does the Manta Ray share with him what he believes is the Secret to Happiness. I really liked that the book showed my children that material things won't make them happy. Depending on others for happiness also doesn't keep you happy forever.

The main message of this book is that sharing is a way to be happy. The book was beautifully illustrated showing the story and my children's favorite part was when Hugo's heart was so happy it was doing flips. This book also features some terms in Spanish. My children have learned to say hour, day, month and year from this book. Sharing is a very important lesson for children. It helps them learn to get along with others and develop friendships. Having siblings I know all too well about sharing with them and others. I teach my children to share and I like this book to use as a back up for why sharing is important. It's a great read to pick up for all families with children, whether you have just one or multiple.

I was provided this book for review from Tomoson. Any and all opinions are my own.

HASH(0x9ab689fc) out of 5 stars Teach a Child how to be happy with what they have July 17 2013
By Jaime's Reviews - Published on
Hugo The Happy Starfish, written by Suzy Liebermann a brilliant author who teaches children through her writing. Suzy writes her books so well that no matter what your child's reading level is or their disabilities they can still read her books and learn something while doing so. They even learn Spanish throughout the book.

Hugo the Happy Starfish, The secret to Happiness was a great read for my 8 year old Autistic daughter who is always bored or sad. Once she read Suzy's book she had a better understanding of what you have to do to become happy for longer periods of time.

Since she has read the book she is hugging lots of people to share her happiness with others. In my opinion if my daughter got this out of one book of Suzy's then any child can get it.

Hugo is sad and goes out to seek happiness, he becomes happy for an hour, than a day, then he would love to become happy for life. Suzy wrote her book so well that is also shows children no matter how much you have in life when it comes to material item's you can not stay happy forever.

To be completely happy you must share your joy and love with everyone around you. You need your friends to be happy and with your help they can also be happy as well. It doesn't matter what you have in life as long as you share your heart with those you know!!

You can find all of Suzy's books on Amazon!!
