Into this volume has been compressed the quintessence of a colossal learning. It is a living human document, pulsating with the mental and spiritual vibrations of a profound thinker who takes knowledge for his province and reduces whole libraries to a single tome. -- George Barron, Curator of the De Young Museum of San Francisco, in his tribute to this remarkable work.
Simply put, this is the most beautiful and complete occult book ever published. It represents a lifetime of research into the mythology, symbolism, and magical practices of countless cultures. From the secrets of Isis to the teachings of mystic Christianity, nearly every occult dogma imaginable is represented here. The book is full of giant illustrations, some of which fold out into a magnificent two-page splendor. This is the definitive guide to secret societies, famous figures, and more a must for every personal library. -- Llewellyn New Times --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
From the Publisher
The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.See all Product Description

However, don't expect to find anything on contemporary esoteric orders.
I found the work to be a bit too speculative at times, not giving enough facts. Moreover, the book has a very distinct 'We, the freemasons' kind of feeling, which in my opinion hampers the objectivity of the work.
Except for the big plates at the beginning of each chapter, the numerous diagrams presented here are usually printed too small to meditate upon, which is the only serious flaw.
In short, as the title says, it is an encyclopedia, but nothing more. For in depth information concerning esoteric teachings, look elsewhere.
Almost like an encyclopedia, but not exactly, if you like philosophy and other non-fiction you should find it a good book.
The author explains alot from the early sages and philophers.
Also theres alot of pictures ( It is a book on symbology ) The Dover edition has small black and white photos. They are good enough. But if you are really into the book the Jubilee edition had the jumbo pages with color pictures and there are alot of images not in the smaller version, even as to whole pages with pictures ( theres a series which are not in the smaller edition , among others ) Even the this page so you can compare Francis Bacons photo with Shakespeare right on top and see how similiar they are.
Some other chapters include ; music and colour , the zodiac, human body in symbolism, alchemy, fishes insects and birds, stones and gems, hermetic pharmacology and much more. Remember is mostly about symbolism he does discuss more about each topic.
I really liked this book, other then on the kabbalistic diagrams he gets really intense but other than that it is a really enjoyable read.
Update: i just discovered how helpful-in-understanding the
"Fundamentals of Qabbalistic Cosmogeny" chapter is...
...having made several attempts at understanding the Jewish esoteric kind of thinking, this shows how sane it, in some ways, can be ( :
Tarot section... get instead Elisabeth Haich's
"Wisdom of the Tarot"

Do remember she was born Hungarian & wrote in Swiss German: we have English translations,

For Rosicrucian esoterica & Tantra, again Elizabeth Haich: "Sexual ENERGY & Yoga".

As for this book?
Useful as a resource for what seems involved in any specific-subject...
But, as i say, for each specific domain, if you can find a source for unadulterated-truth of that domain's kind, stick to that!

Awesome book. Manly Palmer Hall is and absolute genius as you can plainly tell as you read any of his works. Book also arrived the day before it was supposed to. Read morePublished 12 months ago by Jim Simpson
It was disappointing. It did not match the hype. There was nothing in the book that is not GENERALLY known. Nothing was explicit, everything was vague and general. Read morePublished on Oct. 14 2013 by pat oliver
