Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Sean Delancey, high school basketball star, is just an ordinary, popular guyuntil he meets eccentric Raymond Jardine, a boy with absolutely no luck. Although reluctant at first, Sean is drawn into Raymond's wacky scheme to secure a spot on the school-sponsored trip to Theamelpos, the fabulous Greek island that grants good luck to everyone who visits it. Through his friendship with Raymond, Sean learns to value individuality and independent thinking. And in the book's hilarious climax, it is Sean himself who engineers the showdown between the student body and SACGEN, the principal's pet projecta virtually useless Solar/Air Current Generating Machine that supposedly powers the high school. Smooth, skillful writing and an engaging cast of quirky characters will keep readers chuckling to the very end of this thoroughly enjoyable book. Ages 12-up.

Praise for A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag:

"The story is a classic tale of teenage scheming, but the reader roots for Jardine to finally succeed in overcoming his string of bad luck. It's a book that teens love because it's about one of their own, and the boys' struggles, told with Korman's trademark humour, will keep readers laughing and engaged throughout." —Canadian Family

"Readers who enjoy the humour in This Can't Be Happening at MacDonald Hall will appreciate the antics in this re-released edition (originally published in 1985). Raymond and Sean are likeable, well-rounded characters who have memorable personalities and quirks." —CM Magazine

Format: Paperback
A wonderfully written book; one of the best I've read in High School. I found myself borrowing it many times; since it was so old, it still had a card on the back and not a bar code for scanning with. With this, I realize that humor does not always have to be complicated or anything related to pop culture. It can be wholly simple and just plain classic.

Genre: School life, humor
Not recommended for: People who like action, blood, horror, etc. etc. I'm a big fan of the mentioned, but there are a lot of people who I know won't get the most out of this book.

What a great book: full of quirky characters that I love.

This book is about a teen. Sean Delancy the main person of the book. He is trying to win a trip to Theamelpos which is a Greek island. The class he is trying to win it in is English class. He must write a essay to be able to win the trip. His luck is bad. You must read the book to yourself to be able to find out if he win the trip or not. I would recomend this book to any one whose life is hard as an eleventh grader.

Such a funny and well-written book, I wish G Korman wrote more books like this and the MacDonald Hall series. I enjoy his new adventure series but they just aren't the same!

HASH(0xa7a74864) out of 5 stars stands the test of time June 28 2011

i loved this book at age 12, and i just reread it now - it's extremely good. raymond jardine is a top-rate literary character. i might not be able to go so far as the reviewer who called Gordon Korman "the best fiction author of the 20th and 21st centuries," but he definitely has something really special.

HASH(0xa7a749b4) out of 5 stars That's right, give Jardine a book that's out of print! Jan. 13 2000

My friend introduced me to this book many years ago. We read it out loud to each other and I have read it out loud to several people since (family, roommates....) Korman is great for zany characters but Jardine is his best. I actually found a Raymond Jardine in the phone book here in St. John's, Newfoundland, and had the strongest urge to give him a call, but I restrained myself! Korman at his very best. Love the poems. I have my own paperback copy but would love to get a hardback. Bring this one back!

HASH(0xa7a74cf0) out of 5 stars Great Book! July 5 2011

So there you are, wondering if this book is worth it. It seems old, has a weird cover... and not to mention that strange, unappealing title (c'mon... garbage bag? urgggg!).

Don't be deterred by appearances. After all, they always said "don't judge a book by it's cover" :) This is a very funny teen story which is so rare! And when I say funny I truly mean it. I'm one of those people that are very hard to make even smile and I have to say I've cracked up a few times by the antics of Sean and Jardine (especially Jardine!) :P

So buy it.... seriously.. do it NOW!!! Get it from the used books.. it's only 1 cent!!!! Trust me, it will be the best penny you've ever spent :P

Long live Gavin Gunhold! :P

This book is the best book I've ever read before! I never laugh when I'm reading a book, no matter what, but when I read this book, tears were rolling out of my eyes, it was that funny! This book should get a Newbery Medal or something!

HASH(0xa7a74e40) out of 5 stars read this, love it, pass it on Nov. 7 2011

This is vintage Gordon Korman: Everyone is nuts except the straight-man protagonist Sean, non-stop crazy action, and those poems...I first read this book nearly 20 years ago and just bought it used after scouring the library systems of 2 boroughs. I still laugh hysterically at certain parts (husband: "I don't get it, isn't that a kids' book?") and I still know many of the poems by heart (especially "Fruit Fly", for some reason). I dream of the day that this gets made into a movie which launches it back into print and popularity for a new generation, although I have to wonder what kids would make of the anti-technology message.
