HASH(0xa3e37de0) out of 5 stars Quite an eye opener! May 27 2012

Dr. Brooke Magnanti, who worked as a call girl to make ends meet while completing her PhD (and wrote about her experiences under the pseudonym Belle de Jour), debunks various myths about sex, sex work, pornography etc. and shows how much government policy on these matters is informed by shoddy research. On the one hand she provides data which confirms what I already suspected (especially regarding pornography, sex addiction, the effect of adult businesses (strip clubs, etc.) on the incidence of rape and sexual assault and the so called dangers of online pornography). On the other hand, what she has to say about issues such as prostitution and human trafficking was quite an eye opener.

Well worth a read!

HASH(0xa4080018) out of 5 stars Necessary Information Feb. 19 2013

The challenge with issues as prostitution is to separate private morality and belief from public policy. The former only poorly inform the latter. Brooke Magnanti speaks from authority and counters privately held moral judgments with information. The difficulty is that beliefs are tough and durable things and are hardly likely to be modified by fact. Nonetheless, for those who prefer to base their conclusions on information in the place of myth, this is an interesting book, interesting to anyone who is concerned by the intrusion of government into every facet of life, often with terrible consequences. For example, one often finds it said that crime accompanies prostitution. It does, but for one reason only, that prostitution is illegal in many jurisdictions. When one makes activities that are and ought to be private choices the subject of law, the consequences are often terrible, as was the case with Prohibition, and now the new prohibition, the "War On Drugs" that has caused crime to explode across America and the world, as did the original version. The cover of "Sex Myths" is poorly designed, and does not do justice to its valid content.

HASH(0xa3e455a0) out of 5 stars Eye-opening March 11 2014

Having not thought spent much time thinking about sex work, before discovering Brooke I had the narrow-minded view that it was a career for the abused and hopeless. I now know differently and it's in large part due to this book, which confirmed the misgivings I had about my previous views once I paused long enough to think about them. Her research is meticulously done and well-reasoned and shows just how religious institutions and people who simply do not know better exploit our fear and ignorance. Contrary to the belief of critics, I did not immediately start selling sex for money on reading this, rather I now think that it is a legitimate way to earn money if you are the type of person who would be comfortable in that environment. Not for me, but if you have the sexual capacity for it, go for it.
Sex work is still a very degraded business; degraded by those who do not partake in it and make assumptions about those who do. I hope that this and the work of others will contribute to a bettering of conditions and treatment of those involved.

HASH(0xa4055dec) out of 5 stars A unique take on sex, sexual public policy and the sex industry April 29 2014

The book is brilliant!!! Parting from the experience of a person who is both a former academic/statistician AND an ex-call girl, the book draws from both scientific methodology and empirical anecdotes to explain why most of our beliefs concerning sex, regardless of the side of the fence in which you stand, are probably false -and more importantly, who promotes thesw falsehoods, how, and how to spot them. And a fun read, to boot. Must-read for anyone with genitals still attached, from conservative christians to radical 'sexually liberated' feminists.
