5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Next Installment April 1 2013
By Avid_Reader - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
In Shadow World, A.C. Crispin and Jannean Elliot look at culture clash on the most primal level, that of attitudes about life and death. The short-lived Elspind start their lives gender-neutral, then go through their version of puberty, emerging with a gender. They then have a strong urge to mate, maybe because they die within a few years after that. Scientists are working on medically extending this race's life span, but many of the Elspind oppose this treatment, some violently. The Elspind deal with their short lives by celebrating each day and each life, even those of their enemies, and that's difficult for some longer-lived races to understand. The book revolves around these conflicts, as seen through the eyes of a Starbridge student who's still coming to terms with his mother's recent death.

This third installment of the Starbridge series gives us a look at the inner workings of the Starbridge academy and at the continuing conflict among some of the Cooperative League of Systems' members. We also touch base with some familiar characters from the first book, StarBridge. It's a great third installment, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another good starbridge book Oct. 7 1998
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This book really pushed the edge of the starbridge series with a more adult story.
There is a constant them of 'el' and 'wo' (life and death) that will bring ying and yang to mind. You are shown that living a short life is preferable to just existing in a long one.
I would say it was a mix of janet kagan's 'UHURA'S SONG' with some Buddhism thrown in.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series worth many nights of reading Oct. 8 2012
By S. Moon - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
The Starbridge series features good plots, great character development, and a truly interesting theme. Indeed, the books earn a consistent five star rating in my opinion. This is SciFi focused on people, not hardware - a rather rare sub-genre that is nice to settle down with.

During a previous release, there were problems with the publisher - problems which have now been eliminated, with the author taking over and self publishing. As such, I wholeheartedly recommend this series!
5.0 out of 5 stars This series just keeps getting better. Oct. 30 2012
By David Pease - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
The 3rd book in the series continues to impress. This book revolves around a species known as the Elspind who have a very short life span, about 14 yrs. They were discovered by accident when a shuttle from the Cooperative League of Systems crashed on their planet. Although primitive in some respects the majority of the population is eager to gain membership in the League, this would provide many benefits including an experimental drug that could double their life span, even though this is violently opposed by a minority of the population to the point of terrorism. A young Starbride Academy Interrelator trying to find his own purpose is thrust into the mix and must find a way to unite the people of Elseemar and bring peace to the planet.

Excellent book; check this one out I really think you will like it.
5.0 out of 5 stars I love the Starbridge series and Shadow World has gone from ... March 9 2016

I love the Starbridge series and Shadow World has gone from being another enjoyable book in this series, to one of my favorite books period. This series has such a unique and in my opinion more realistic view on inter-species interactions. In Shadow World this is presented beautifully with a new species that has an incredibly short lifespan. Their customs and beliefs are presented in such a way that keeps you viewing both sides of such a tragic and unique existence. I hope other people can get into the Starbridge series and that others can come to enjoy this book as much as I have.
