As a big Marillion fan in the eighties and latterly of their former frontman, Fish, I was already familiar with some of Mark Wilkinson's work. Album artwork (and that of some Marillion singles) from both feature prominently in this lavishly colourful and well laid out book. What I didn't realise is that Mark has also contributed to other musician's album art too - Judas Priest and Iron Maiden being the most prominent, as well as dabbling in other projects, including the original Star Wars re-release media.
If I have one complaint to make about this lovely book, it is that it isn't big enough! I mean that I'd have loved to have seen some of the gatefold album sleeves reproduced full-size.

HASH(0xa47bd81c) out of 5 stars Beauty Beyond Music Jan. 20 2010
By Jeffrey Gaudiosi - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Music has been an important part of my life for as long as I could remember. Growing up in the 80's, a lot of my musical tastes were formed by the images I saw on the cover art of an album. When I first saw Misplaced Childhood, the striking cover caught my eye and let to a lifelong love of the music of Fish and Marillion as well as the art of Mark Wilkinson. The quality of this book is superb but the content is above and beyond expectations. Even if you are not a fan of Fish or Marillion, or perhaps like most in the USA, you've never heard of them, you still know Mark's work. Everything from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to the Judge Dredd comics and an elegant, stunning collection of postage stamp art is included here, along with the stories and explanations behind them.
This is more than a collection of album cover's a collection of music and art stories and history, a tutorial on the creative process, and a conversation piece at home in any setting. A powerful, beautiful book.

HASH(0xa44e7a2c) out of 5 stars Art And Music In A Perfect Union ! Jan. 19 2010
By George B. Soltis - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I was drawn (no pun intended) to Mark Wilkinson's work through his imagery from all the various Marillion albums and singles. It was really the art that I first saw in Kerrang magazine that created the interest in the band and prompted my first purchase of their work. The rest is history so to say.Whether you are a lover of music, appreciator of art,or better yet both,I would highly recommend this particular item. The book, binding, color, and overall texture is stunning.Telling the story of a fantastic career, it opens your eyes to the artistic vision of one of the best album art creators period.Diving far beyond his work with Marillion and Fish,it features all the musical projects and work Mr. Wilkinson has laid his magic brush to. Fan of Iron Maiden,it's here. Ditto Judas Priest.Besides the music, there's all the other highlights including Sci Fi,comic books, and privately commissioned works.Believe me when I say this is a PERFECT coffee table book.A great conversation piece and perfect gift to yourself or others.Buy it now while the hardcover is still out there.I can't imagine you'll be disappointed.

HASH(0xa4456a8c) out of 5 stars Captivating and Inspiring Jan. 19 2010
By Kirt A. Vanoveren - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Mark Wilkinson is probably most famous for his work on Marillion album covers. This is how I was exposed to his work. To be completely honest, his work made me buy my first Marillion album. I was a fan of progressive music and the cover was captivating. Over the years, I have come to admire the art that Mark creates as I have mourned the loss of vinyl and album covers. When I found out Mark was releasing a book of his art, I immediately ordered it. I could not be more pleased. The art, coupled with Mark's story and the stories behind the art, were fascinating. I was also amazed to find out that other album covers I had admired... Judas Priest, Iron Maiden were actually Wilkinson's work. I brought this book to my school and shared it with an art teacher. She was so inspired by his work, she went out and bought an airbrush so she could explore this avenue of art. The visual imagery coupled with the stories behind the creations make this book a must buy. I could not be more pleased. HIGHLY recommend.
