It's not too surprising that Shag flopped on its 1989 release but found a devoted cult following on cable TV and home video. This featherweight comedy looked like a waste of space on the big screen, but it plays very cozily on the tube, where it lends itself to popcorn breaks and pajama parties. (The lousy title must have had something to do with the movie's initial failure, a problem worsened by the film being marketed as Shag: The Movie, a truly dumb idea.) Shag is in the tradition of Spring Break pictures, a thoroughly formulaic stroll through the conventions of the minigenre: beachside romance, a wild party, one tender deflowering, and lots of rock & roll. The time is 1963, as three gal friends trick their soon-to-be-married pal (Phoebe Cates) into one final all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged to a local well-bred stick (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's tempted by a beach boy (Robert Rusler) bound for Yale (mm-hmm). The so-so material is buoyed by lovely Annabeth Gish, as the supposedly pudgy one in the group, and Bridget Fonda, as a prematurely sophisticated sexpot. After a while it's easy enough to relax and enjoy the girls' breezy adventures, which are served up without the soap opera melodrama of the similarly tooled Where the Boys Are. Oh, and Austin Powers notwithstanding, the title refers to the dance, not something else. --Robert Horton

I have seen this movie easily over 50 times - I came across it randomly when I was still a teenager, and have watched it religiously throughout the years. I would recommend it to anyone who like dirty dancing, grease, step up, etc.

This movie has got to be the best movie (along with Gone With the Wind) ever! I have actually worn out my VHS tape because my girlfriends and I (all from South Carolina) get together to watch it at least once a week! I went to Senior Week (as Sun Fun weekend is known to graduating seniors from SC) four years ago, as did every graduating senior in SC, as did our parents before us. My mom loves to watch it because it reminds her of her Senior Week (in 1963)! Those who don't like it, are usually guys or those who don't know what shagging is or how to do it (people not from SC or the South, basically). So give it a chance, don't just rent it, you have to buy it!

Ah, Shag! This is one of my favorite movies for so many reasons. The movie is definitely lightweight, but also very memorable. The perfect casting had one thing to do with that. Everyone in this movie, down to the late Carrie Hamilton, is made-to-order. The "Southern" details of this movie are also dead-on. As a North Carolinian who's spent a heck of a lot of time in Myrtle Beach (though in the '90s, not in the '60s) the accents, expressions, music, and clothes are all correct for the time and place. The story is simple, but most great movies have simple plots when you get right down to it. What makes Shag shine is great acting, fantastic period details, and quotable dialogue. Watch this movie with another Southerner or anybody else who could appreciate the humor and the fun of this great movie. Whether it's your first time or your 100th time watching it, Shag is absolutely the "most fun"!
By the way, though this is not the original motion picture soundtrack, it's still pretty darn good. For those of you who didn't see the early VHS version of the movie, let me explain: some of the songs were in the original version of the movie and are still in this version; others were added later. The original movie soundtrack, which I still have, contains new versions of old songs, plus a couple of original ones. I don't know why it was changed, but I'd sure like to have a copy of the DVD with the original soundtrack, which includes songs by K.D Lang and Randy Newman, to name a few.

Ok, I've posted here quite a few times about this movie. The reason the music was changed from the original was that the copyright laws evidently were infringed upon. Evidenty, they didn't get the licenses to use the music. After about 6 months after the first video version was released, Video stores were actually told to remove it from the shelves. Block Buster did that in Spartanburg, SC (where i'm from). Luckily I had a copy I made from HBO at the time. About 6 mo later, a new version came out with the changed music, (and box). If you notice there are spots in the new video where music once was and now none exist. WEIRD. Anyway, I recommend going to smaller video stores and dubbing your own copy of the original if you can find it. I truely enjoyed being an extra in the movie and found Paige Hannah and Carrie Hamilton to be FANTASTIC. The movie is FUN. If you're looking for a great story, complicated plot etc...this isn't the movie for you. If you are looking for some good oneliners, enjoyable cast, good music, and just plane fun.. rent it..watch it with friends. As a side note, it seems as though this movie has received a cult following from the college girl sect.. Thanks girls :) Questions or comments can be made to my email address.. joshsc@hotmail.com

Shag The Movie. I love this movie. I have watched it since I was like 10 years old. It's about four just graduated best friends who go on a wild last weekend together to Myrtle Beach. These four friends are so close but so different from each other. One is the soon to be married Carson. Malaina is the rebelious preachers daughter. Pudge is the girl who has plenty of boy friends but no boyfriend, and Luann is the very conservative Senators daughter. These girls start their weekend thinking that they know where they are heading in life, but those couple of days put them all on different paths to different directons. No matter what they will always be just as close as when it all started. This is a fun movie. It shows about friendship, first loves, new love, disappointment and anticipation. It is a good movie for teens, especially girls. Buy this one to have handy at all your future slumber parties.

When I was in high school, my friends and I rented this movie over and over again from the local video store. It's got an amazing ensemble cast (including Darryl Hannah's younger sister, Paige, along with the better know Brigdet Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish).
I was really excited when I ran across a copy of Shag for sale. Unfortunately, when I popped it in the VCR, expecting to relive my high school experience, I discovered that this version was *different* than the one I used to watch. Different soundtrack. Terrible sound quality. Quite the drag.
Hopefully some day they'll come out with a decent transfer someday, maybe even port it to DVD (I'm not holding my breath...). This movie is definitely worth seeing, but this version of it is not eveny worth the shipping cost.
