This is a marvellous addition to the Holmes series. I love it because it allows us to see and understand Holmes and Watson as far more complex and fascinating characters than the modern version does. Until this DVD, I considered Jeremy Brett's Holmes to be the best available - and it is still a great collection of Holmesian fiction. Here, Cumberbatch shows that he is definitely one of the best actors working at this time. Martin Freeman seems to almost always be overlooked by the critics but he is a solid actor providing a base for most of Holmes' work.
As to the plot: Well, most Holmes' fans will be able to work this one out after about ten minutes. But it is done well. Yet we have seen these twists before. Even the title gives too much away.
But if you like, or love Holmes as I do, this is an essential DVD to add to your collection.

This is not part of a season but a standalone Sherlock special. However, the story continues from right where we left off at the end of Season 3, when Sherlock was removed from Great Britain against his wishes. He was placed in a plane and was being taken out of the country. While in this plane, Sherlock goes inside his own mind castle to try and solve one of the greatest mysteries from a hundred years ago: the case of the Abominable Bride. A woman killed herself in front of the townspeople, but she kept reappearing to kill many unfaithful and hurtful "husbands" in the town. But, how can a dead woman reappear to kill many other people? That's the mystery and you will have to watch this special to find out if Sherlock is able to solve the case or not. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have brilliantly crafted this story, and help us get inside the head of the brilliant Sherlock. Gatiss also brilliantly directed this special. I cannot wait for Season 4.

I loved this. I know some people were not happy with this stand alone episode, but I thought it was delightful. Something totally different than the usual. I really did enjoy going back to 1890s Sherlock and was really surprised when they brought him forward again. Loved it as it was so unexpected. Sharply done Moffatt and Gatiss!

I don't want to post spoilers, but I will say that this is the first episode seen entirely from Sherlock's perspective. It's quite a shock indeed, to finally get a grasp on how he views others and how he thinks others view him.

Sherlock has returned - briefly! This interim special is a busy one, maybe a bit too busy at times. picking up from the aborted flight out of country seen at the end of the last episode, our hero Sherlock travels back and forth in time (you have to see it to understand and I won't provide any further spoilers here other than he's addressing an old case in order to solve a new one). Everyone's favorite characters are here, even nasty Moriarity. The wonderful Mr. Cumberbach and equally fascinating Mr. Martin are favorite sleuths whose chemistry remains a winner. Having this helps relieve the agonizing wait for promised new episodes.

Great story, so well written. Benedict and Martin are outstanding. I have watched this movie 4 times so far and I am still seeing and picking up on clues relating to Moriarty's return. Going from present day London to the late 1880s London was beautifully done. Loved how all the supporting actors/characters blended in. A must see for all Sherlock fans.
