About the Author
Austin Kleon is a writer who draws. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work! His work has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, PBS Newshour, and in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. He also speaks frequently about creativity in the digital age for such organizations as Pixar, Google, SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. He lives in Austin, Texas, and online at austinkleon.com.

This book gives down to earth and tangible advice. There are even some areas where the advice hits home and makes you question whether you're doing this art game even right. Austin doesn't beat around the bush, he won't give you that one advice that will propel your work to stardom. All of Austin's advice in this book is short, applicable but requires patience. So if you're willing to play the long game, then the advice in this book will be gold for any creative endeavours you have.
If you're on the fence to get this book, you should think about what you're losing out on. All the advice you can get without sweating for it. Popular creatives like Ryan Holiday (if you don't know him, google him) recommend Austin's books for all creatives, and Ryan has accomplished a lot with his creativity.
Soooo, get this book and start your creative journey the right way.
What I liked about his book is Mr. Kleon provides an approachable method for becoming findable. As I read through the pages, I felt his encouragement and permission to share; to put art out into the world. I particularly liked his advice about dealing with criticism: focus on feedback from the people who have done this type of work or from those people whose opinion you value and ignore the rest.
The drawings and illustrations are unique and quirky, making the book a pleasure to read. He calls himself a writer who draws - which is an apt description.
What did I dislike? Perhaps my criticism is more of a difference in opinion. As someone with a background in marketing, I disagree with Mr. Kleon when he says you should not ask for likes or for friends on social media. If the artist won't ask or at least invite people to look at their work, how can anyone know about what the artist does? Social currency in the form of "Like" or "Retweet" in social media is a powerful influencer. It means more people will come see the work. Creatives send invitations to book launches and art show openings all the time and not always to people they know. As Mr. Kleon notes it is not about becoming human spam but once in a while the artist should extend the invitation. Folks may not know there is a party going on if they are not invited.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who does the hard work of creating art.
'Steal like an artist' changed how I view influence and inspiration, teaching me new ways to explore and improve my art. It taught me how to search for and create my own inspiration instead of waiting for it.
'Show your work' is the perfect companion to its masterful predecessor.
Continuing with the same entertaining but straight to the point delivery, genius insight, and honest advice, I honestly cannot say if one is better than the other. They go together so well.
'Show your work' is showing you how to get your art out into the world, not only after you have created it, but as you are creating it. He extends insight on how to invite people into your work, allowing them to see what you're doing, and how hard you work on your craft, even before you have something you've deemed 'finished' and fit for public viewing.
Austin takes the old traditions of artistry and artistry as business, and shows where we need to rethink how we do and/or share things.
Truly, genius is the most accurate word for what Austin is creating here, and I CANNOT wait until the next instalment!
