Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition

Amazon.ca

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

Because I managed to snag a copy of Shrek 1 3D during the Black Friday sales event for a very good price, I am generally happy with what I received.

That being said, I still question why Dreamworks would rip off potential customers in such a blatantly obvious manner?

Not only is there no 2D Blu-ray version included, and not only is there no digital version voucher included, there is also zero extra/special features on the 3D Blu-ray disk.

Since I'd like to own the entire set, I now need to purchase the 2D version, which I will not do unless the asking price is sufficiently low, as in $7.99 at most. And I'm going to have to repeat this for parts 2, 3 and 4 as well, but I digress.

If you are thinking of purchasing this release, I highly recommend that you do so only if it's priced at the very least below 20 bucks (more preferably below 15 bucks).

On the other hand, the 3D video quality is fantastic, as is the audio track and subtitles.

4/5 - it would have been 5/5 if Dreamworks wasn't so greedy, but enough about that, good day.

"Shrek" along with the movie "Ice Age" are the two great animation films put out in the last ten years. As with all "cartoons" and their genre, there are many cultural reference and movie asides that not everyone is going to get. More so in "Shrek" than in "Ice Age." This is obviously done on purposes, cross pollenating the audiences of younger and older generations.

"Shrek" works on so many levels. First, the casting of voices is the best I've encountered. The animation is fantastic, and the story holds together nicely.

If you want a movie everyone can watch, "Shrek" is the one to pick. I would HIGHLY recommend "Ice Age" also (both of them now) as they're very funny with an underlying message of global warming, which, by now, we all know is happening.

Shrek is an excellent movie and is best viewed in it's proper widescreen ratio but this DVD set only has the single disc fullscreen version and no widescreen and the 3D movie is just a short movie from a ride at Universal Studios and is only about 15 minutes so if you like widescreen movies you would be best to buy the old two DVD set that has the movie in widescreen and fullscreen and plenty of extras or wait until Shrek 2 is released on DVD with the first movie and the very short 3D movie but anyway a 3D movie seen on your television set won't be as good as in a theater where they use enhanced special effects and personally I find this set to be a waste of money!

Utterly original, terrific animated film, with great voice performances by Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy,
written with lots of adult wit and humor. Word play and visual puns abound. You don't have to be a kid to love it,
or have kids to rent or buy it. Charming, sweet, funny and romantic.

Amazing, hip use of music (including John Cale's version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'- how's that for obscure?).

On DVD, try and get this now inexplicably, inexcusably out-of-print widescreen version, so you don't lose chunks
of the lovely visuals on the sides of the frame. It can sometimes be found used for a reasonable price.

lame. i imagine most people buying this already have shrek at home, so that would mean most buyers would be purchasing this for the new material. 16 minutes for $20 is pathetic. i feel dumber than a donkey for buying this. instead of "adventure" on the packaging, it should say "new short feature". oh, have fun explaining to your kids, all excited and ready with glasses, that yes, that's all, there's no more. it was great having them look at me, confused about the "movie" ending so early.
