Product Description

Product Description

The M97xE is a superb smooth-sounding phonograph cartridge designed to provide long hours of undistorted listening, without fatiguing the ear. Its highly precise tracking ability and flat frequency response are made possible by Shure's unique Type II low-mass thin-wall aluminum alloy stylus cantilever, combined with a precision-crafted, finely polished, elliptical diamond tip. This cartridge is able to accurately reproduce very difficult musical passages, particularly in the high-frequency range, where audio modulations are the smallest and most concentrated, and stylus tip movement is consequently the most rapid.

From the Manufacturer

The superb-tracking, neutral, smooth-sounding M97xE magnetic phono cartridge is designed to provide hours of undistorted, enjoyable listening without fatiguing the ear or tiring the mind. The cartridge accurately reproduces the most difficult musical packages, particularly in the high-frequency range where audio modulations are the smallest and stylus tip movement is the most rapid. This precise tracking ability is made possible by Shure's unique Type II low-mass, thin-wall, aluminum-alloy stylus cantilever, in addition to its precision-crafted, finely polished elliptical diamond tip.

Among the M97xE's most notable features is a viscous-damped dynamic stabilizer, which maintains a uniform distance between the cartridge and the record under difficult playing conditions, such as those caused by warped records or a mismatched tonearm mass. Should the stabilizer prove unnecessary, listeners can lock it in the detent position, which can, under ideal playing conditions, ensure even better sound quality. The cartridge also offers a die-cast-aluminum mounting block for secure, vibration-free attachment to the tonearm, along with a Side-Guard stylus protection system that helps prevent stylus damage if the cartridge accidentally slides across a record. The latter feature responds to side thrusts on the stylus by withdrawing the entire cantilever and tip safely into the stylus housing before the cantilever can be damaged.

The cartridge delivers an essentially flat 20 Hz to 22 kHz frequency response and fits on a standard 1/2-inch tonearm mount. It also comes with mounting hardware, a headshell screwdriver, and a cleaning brush, and carries a one-year warranty against defects.

What's in the Box
M97xE phono cartridge, headshell screwdriver, stylus cleaning brush, mounting hardware, stylus guard, user's manual.

Great cartridge and an excellent value. It is comparable to cartrdges costing double and is reminiscent of the V15 sound. Deff worth checking out. I have mine installed on a Thorens TD160B MKII with SME 3009 IIIS tonearm This is full range cartridge that reveals all the details in the groove, no coloration, brightness etc.. excellent upper mid, high freqency detail is amazing and tight defined bass. My B&W DM2A speakers rolled off real real low with Shure. What's surprising is that this cartridge is comparable to a more expensive V15 Type 3 and deff the best of the M97 series. It also has a cast alloy upper body (the part that mounts/ screwed directly to the headshell. I leave the guard with the little brush in the up locked position and leave it. no need to use it even with mildly warped records. This is a high compliance cartridge that will track snow.

For it's price range you could do worse. It didn't jump out as being anything spectacular over my aging Shure M-91ED which I find to be quite a good cartridge. Both have a neutral sound. Nothing is overhyped. M-91 just seems a little more sweeter on highs. And it could be a stylus thing.I am also reviewing this with only 10 hours playback so maybe with a break in things will smooth out. Will continue to use it all the same as it is quite enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a step up from a below average cartridge.

it,s hard to compare but like audio systems, there are differences and certain people prefer a type of sound over another.
that being said, if you like tight drum sound and good overall stereo effect with an economical price, this cartridge is for you. i have purchased this to see what modern times might bring in audio improvement, but i still prefer my old v15 type 4 cartidge over this one. of course the v15 cost 3 times as much.....i would reccomend this cartridge for people with low to medium quality turntables.

A very good value cartridge. For the price, I don't think that you can beat it. It tracks very well and is not noisy. I use it on my old table a Marantz 6200 and the sound is great. Very pleased with it!

Excellent cartridge with beautiful presentation box for the money. Always have liked Shure products and this cart is no exception. Neat feature of having the micro bristles at the front of the cart for dust collection.

Sounds very good, but I do not really have anything to compare it to. I listen to mostly rock music. Some of it would be classified as metal(Iron Maiden/Judas Priest), other material would be considered more easy listening(Huey Lewis/Toto/Styx), and everything else in between. I like the sound from all my records. I find myself listening to them daily.

I've been using the Shure M97xE for over fours years now with great satisfaction. the dynamic reproduction of this entry level Stylus & Cartridge is a
clear winner for anyone serious enough about vinyl that they've decided to spend some money on a decent sounding cartridge. You cannot get a better sounding setup for the money than this, PERIOD. Easy to setup, sturdy, not too finicky. comes complete with an anti static carbon fibre brush head.
Currently running on Audio Technica ATLP 240 USB & ATLP 120 USB model direct drive turntables using the RIAA equalized outputs (Phono level)
I could spend more, but why? Shure has a winner with this.
Come over to my house anytime to hear it!
Cheers
