Lots of people think of Nirvana and Pearl Jam when they think of the Seattle scene, but the genre-shattering Soundgarden were among the true founders of the Seattle sound. This collection follows them from their early years in the late '80s through today, including big hits like Black Hole Sun and Outshined from their multi-platinum A&M releases and some rare selections. The best from one of the most influential bands of the decade.
Soundgarden combined the epic grandstanding of Led Zeppelin with the grunge buzz of Blue Cheer and the psychedelic undertones of the Butthole Surfers to create some of the definitive hard rock of the 1990s. This collection of what can loosely be defined as "hits" (hard rock isn't noted for its singles action) briefly sweeps over the indie years with SubPop and SST, placing emphasis on the band's successful A&M years. Singer Chris Cornell's histrionic wails grabbed the bulk of the attention, but the band's true power rested with the drumming of Matt Cameron and the twin guitar attack of Cornell and Kim Thayil. One need only listen to "Fell on Black Days" or "Blow Up the Outside World" to understand that Soundgarden's complex riffs and superb dynamics were its great strengths. --Rob O'Connor

The CD didn't exactly meet my pre-conceived ideas & I was personally somewhat disappointed - maybe, it's an acquired CD...especially, if you're not a hard-core fan.
Maybe Nirvana did enjoy most of the spotlight and together with that the legendary status now known to everyone. Maybe Rage against the Machine did become the voice of a generation and did produce the most important political album of all time. Along with these, you'd have your superb Alice in Chains, your Tool, your Ministry and other groups or artists who left a more than important trace in modern music's history.
With all that cosmogonic stuff going on around them, Soundgarden quietly recarved a new niche left behind by people like Led Zeppelin. They added in the mix a heavy psychedelia touch, toned that up with Cornell's rollercoasting voice and the shuttle was on its way.
Soundgarden struggled to perfectionise aforementioned coctail. They flirted with the outskirts of punk sound and were not always on top of their form. Their very last studio LP was a sad exit to an otherwise great career and in other albums there were impressive ups but also puzzling downs.
This is where "A-sides" comes in. While it's not "normal" for such groups to release "Best of"s (which is what A-sides essentially is) in Soundgarden's case i think it's a great move to reintroduce themselves in one piece to those who havent discovered them or to those who want one album that assembles together this group's best songs.
And speaking of best songs there's aton of them here. When soundgarden got their formula right the result was classy and very trippy rock songs and this CD is the overwhelming evidence for it.Read more ›

The first tracks "Nothing to Say" and "Flower" are very exceptional because the vocals are even sadder than in others. The melody is darker too. Read morePublished on April 10 2003 by Reijo Piippula
