Product Description

It was only meant to last the summer . . .

Talia Stolfi has seen more than her share of loss in her twenty-one years. But then fate brought her Bran Lockhart, and her dark world was suddenly and spectacularly illuminated. So if being with Bran means leaving her colorless NorCal life for rugged and wild Australia, then that's what she'll do. But as much as Talia longs to give herself over completely to a new beginning, the fears of her past are still lurking in the shadows.

Bran Lockhart knows that living without the beautiful girl who stole his heart will be torment, so he'll take whatever time with her he can. But even though she has packed up her life in California and is back in his arms for the time being, she can't stay forever. And the remaining time they have together is ticking by way too fast. Though fate seems determined to tear them apart, they won't give up without a fight-because while time may have limits, their love is infinite . . .

3.75 stars--SIDESWIPED is the second installment in Lia Riley’s contemporary, new adult OFF THE MAP romance series focusing on Talia Stolfi and Bran Lockhart. Their continuing story finds our couple reunited in Australia where life together is anything but easy. From difficult family situations to finishing up thesis papers and more, Talia and Bran will discover that there is more to life than hot sex and moonlit nights. Life has a funny way of getting in the way when desires and past dreams becomes front and center.

The storyline follows Bran and Talia’s tumultuous relationship. Talia’s increasing struggles with OCD begin to spiral out of control when family issues for both Bran and herself take a decidedly darker turn. Talia reconsiders what it is she wants from life when the Peace Corps begins calling her name. While Bran has given up his need for the Sea Alliance environmental cause, there is still the hope that one day he will become an active volunteer. Talia will make the decision to move on but not out of Bran’s life, but Bran is unable to understand Talia’s desire for something more.

There is no denying Bran and Talia’s love for one another-one riddled with jealousy, concern, heartbreak and mistrust. Bran and Talia’s pasts and their family histories have scarred our couple with emotional and psychological wounds that have yet to heal. Add the potential for loss and Bran will be hurled into the despair of anguish and no hope.

The secondary characters include Bran’s dysfunctional family-from a father who desires a reconciliation with his son and a mother who is more concerned about appearances, Bran must weather the storm that is family. Add a sister whose own marriage is collapsing, Bran struggles with the right thing to do.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review an ARC of this book!

Bran loves Talia. Talia loves Bran. And so they lived happily ever after, right? Right?! Wouldn't be much of a book if that's how it went down, and I think it would have been easy for "Sideswiped" to fall victim to the sophomore slump if that's how Lia Riley decided to write it. Fortunately, this series continues on with the same great writing and realistic characters that I came to love in "Upside Down".

Talia is fortunate to be able to finish her degree in Hobart while Bran works on his research project, and they are also able to play house together. While the relationship is still new and there are a few bumps, they quickly get into a rhythm that works for them. Lurking in the background, however, is the knowledge that Talia's visa will soon run out, and then what? Not only that, but Talia also realizes that Bran is not completely happy with being stuck in a lab all day - she doesn't want to stifle his passionate spirit. And not only that, but Talia has the need to go off on her own and spread her wings, too - she needs to see what she can accomplish herself, without riding Bran's coattails. Bran, meanwhile, comes up with a desperate plan to keep them together, but by holding on so hard, he's inadvertently pushing Talia away.

Ugh, the angst! I could feel the tension with every page! Talia and Bran's situation hit quite close to home as I recalled the early stages of my relationship with my husband - newly graduated with no real clue of what I wanted to do with my future, career-wise, but sure that I'd found "the one" I wanted to be with, and knowing somehow that things would work out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it possible to love it more than I loved Upside Down? Oct. 7 2014

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review (although I loved it so much, I bought it as well!) And I can honestly say that this is a fabulous book. HOWEVER, I really think that if you haven't read the first book in the series, Upside Down, you should start with that one (which is also amazing.) This wasn't written as a stand-alone book and I just don't think you will fully understand the characters' issues and struggles, and even their passion, if you haven't read the first book.

That being said, I can't stop thinking about Sideswiped. Talia and Bran have such a passionate love for each other, in a way where they see each others' flaws and accept them, and are crazy for each other anyway. I think this is what makes their story resonate long after the book is over. Also, I think the author did an incredible job showing the dilemmas that develop when you fall in love with someone at the wrong time. In this case, Bran and Talia are just too young for this type of love, so they have to negotiate between their love and reality - that they've barely lived their lives yet and they both have things they need to do. I think this heart wrenching situation was captured beautifully and I often felt like I was right there with the characters as they struggled with it.

I am not usually a big reader of the New Adult genre, but this book, and this series, is for every young reader,AND every "older" reader who remembers what it was like to be young and deeply in love, and still trying to figure out they were and what they wanted. Highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Book Perfection Oct. 7 2014
By Kindle Customer - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
My favorite book of Riley's so far. Second books in the series are always my favorite. It's where s*** gets real. It's where the characters realize...well, heck, we've professed our love, so now what? And Riley answers that question perfectly. Love (the best kind) is messy. Real people screw up. And these characters are so real, they practically bitch-slapped me in the face while reading.

Book two has Talia and Bran living together in a quaint little cottage (one that I so badly covet). They are working through making their relationship work while finishing up their studies. Talia's OCD starts to spiral and Bran is faced with some hard decisions in regards to his dream job. These two are put through the ringer in this book and their relationship is pushed to the brink.

I really loved how Talia handled the whole situation with going for your dream AND being with the person you love, something that I think a lot of twenty-somethings think is not possible. I saw this a lot with my friends in college--they'd give up studying abroad just to make sure that they wouldn't lose the guy they loved. It was refreshing to have a strong heroine that wanted to make her relationship work, but also didn't want to compromise her (or Bran's) dream. She gives Bran a swift kick in the ass when he needs it the most and it makes them stronger because of it.

I love this couple so hard and can't wait to see them get their happily ever after they deserve.

The speed at which I tore through this book is a little embarrassing, but I had to know what was going to happen! I love Talia and Bran, even when they're a PITA.

I will say that I usually hate sequels/series of romance books. I tend to prefer companion novels, where we focus on the other characters from a story but glimpse our favorites from a previous book. This is because I think "great, they're in love and happy, why torture them? Just let them go."

I love a quick and easy happily ever after romance.

That's not real. And I get that maybe we don't always want real. But sometimes we need it--real has lessons to impart. That being said, I could have used this book in my late teens/early twenties, because I was an idiot, and I made a ton of s*** decisions based on what I thought was love. I think this trilogy really could have helped me get it together.
5.0 out of 5 stars More Loveliness from Lia Riley! Feb. 2 2015

This second one of the series has a different tone since the characters are already together, so that initial first spark isn't there. BUT that does NOT mean the heat is gone. At all. Talia and Bran have this amazingly explosive yet tender relationship that goes through ups and downs, rights and lefts and zig-zags. They learn from each other, support each other, fire each others passions. The end was aggravating but necessary for them to grow more as a couple. Good thing there's a third book because HOT DAMN, I really need to see them finally settle into a cohesive blossoming yet stable relationship. They both deserve some peace and all the love the other has to offer.

I loved being back with Talia and Bran. It's always harder to get a story as exciting when the couple is formed but I truly enjoyed seeing their relationship going maybe not always forward but going...LOL At times I got frustrated at esp B not budging, showing that he grew. But on the other hand he did so in the first book and now it was T's turn. I will def read the next book. There is a nice flow in the writing that appeals to me.
