About the Author

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was born in Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849, and emigrated with her family in 1865 to Tennessee, where she lived near Knoxville until her marriage to Dr. S.M. Burnett in 1873. At eighteen, she began publishing her stories in magazines such as Godey’s Lady Book and Scribner’s. At 28, her novel That Lass O’Lowries, based on the colliery life she had known in England, became her first success. But the children’s story she published in 1886, Little Lord Fauntleroy, is what made her famous. Its hero’s long curls and velvet suit with lace collar became a popular fashion for little boys. Little Lord Fauntleroy was also successfully dramatized, just as a later novel, Sara Crewe, became the much better-known stage play, The Little Princess (1905). While laying out a garden at her new home in Long Island, Burnett conceived and wrote The Secret Garden (1911), her best and most enduring work.

Sandra M. Gilbert, an acclaimed literary critic and poet, is the coauthor of some of the most influential literary studies of our time, including The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination and No Man’s Land: The Place of the Woman Writer in the Twentieth Century. She has also published a memoir, Wrongful Death, as well as six collections of verse, including Kissing the Bread: New and Selected Poems 1969-1999, which won the American book Award in 2001. A professor of English at the University of California, Davis, Gilbert is a past president of the Modern Language Association.

Re-writing a classic?

Why would someone try to re-write a classic children's novel...it's a classic precisely for the original wording. I bought this based on price, but I didn't realize these Classic Starts books are altered from the original version.

I haven't assessed the differences between this version and the original, but I definitely won't make the mistake of buying Classic Starts books again.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter to read on her new kindle and as she started reading it, I was surprised by the language/weird wording (I read this many times as a child and didn't remember it being so hard to read). I found my original paper back book and we compared them and the original flows much better and it easier to read. Not sure why someone would change it. At times the language makes no sense! Anyway, don't buy this version - there is another version on amazon for half the price and the language/wording is the exact same as the original. Don't mess with a classic!

Loved the book and both movie versions, so bought this as a gift for one of my high school tutorees. She used it as one of her elective books, and did a comparative essay on Mary and Anne (from "Anne of Green Gables") as orphans adopted into non-typical families dealing with the stresses of adjustment, belonging and self-fulfillment.

I tend to collect children's literature as much for the illustration as for the literary content. The Secret Garden is a classic and is well-known and reviewed elsewhere as a piece of writing. This particular edition, illustrated by Inga Moore, is also visually exquisite. Slightly oversize, it gives space for an illustrator/designer to concoct something wonderful. There are illustrations on almost every page... almost. They leave the odd two facing pages illustration-free, bringing the turning the page to be like the joyful surprise of entering the secret garden yourself. Some illustrations are full page, some are strips along the edges, some are little close-up vignette boxes as if examining individual flowers. Some are pen and ink botanica, some are creatures scurrying across the pages, some are like watermark backdrops. Most are full color and highly detailed and accurate. The story is rightly a classic for its wonderfully transforming and healing relationships. The illustration is a joy to match and highly complements the book. This is a special current edition to have in your library, even if you have another.

What can I say? This book contains the complete and unaltered work of Mrs Burnett, including her captivating attempt at capturing the local Yorkshire dialect. It would be difficult to improve on it, but this book did. The marvelous drawings by Inga Moore put this book into a whole new level. Almost every page has a delightful drawing, most in colour, and bring the story to life.
I highly recommend this book and think it should be a must for any child's library.

How wonderful that The secret Garden lived up to my memories of when I read it at about age ten. Since that was more than sixty years ago and memories tend to grow shinier over time, that's saying something. And the original illustrations are the icing on the cake!
