Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Los Angeles private detective Simeon Grist, seen before in The Four Last Things , stumbles through the smoke-and-mirrors world of television production in his third case. After stopping popular TV series star Toby Vane from beating up his date, Nana, in a bar, Grist is hired by Vane's producer to keep an eye on the actor until the syndication deal for the series goes through. Grist learns that Vane has a history of beating and mutilating women, a past being hushed up to save the deal--and the pots of money for everyone involved. When a friend of Nana's is found dead after being seen with Vane, Grist must determine if Vane is a sadistic killer or the victim of a set-up. Hallinan, partner in a Los Angeles public-relations firm, writes with an insider's authority of such Hollywood mores as name-changing and drug-taking in this tale that seems more an episode from a TV series than a novel.

From Library Journal

Hallinan ( Everything but the Squeal , LJ 3/1/90) bids his strong suit again as Simeon Grist, Hollywood detective, embarks on another riveting, action-packed adventure. Protecting a handsome and popular TV star (with a sadistic penchant for young women) from adverse publicity until the series producer can sell syndication rights almost provides Grist with more than he can handle. Forced to hang out on location with Toby Vane or at a drug-infested club featuring nude dancers, Simeon soon supsects Toby of vicious, bone-snapping murder. Full of intricacies, changed identities, and hidden indiscretions, the plot--probably Hallinan's best yet--never flags.

HASH(0x9db28af8) out of 5 stars No Fluff Here! May 25 2012

Heaven help me! I've found another favorite thriller/mystery author. Timothy Hallinan has created a character worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence with John Rain, Elvis Cole and Jack Reacher.
PI Simeon Grist is smart, literate and tenacious as hell.
In this 3rd book (which is really the first book in the series...publishers are strange people) we meet some very nasty people. So nasty that I don't recommend this book to the feint of heart. You will walk with Simeon as he puts the pieces of a grizzly murder of a stripper into place. You will feel his anger and disgust. Any you will be hooked.
Added to the great plot and character is a wonderful use of the English prose. Hallinan gives quotable lines in almost every chapter:
"So sit on your secrets. Keep them warm. Maybe they'll hatch into nightmares."
"Money is heavy beyond its physical weight. Gram for gram, money is the heaviest thing in the world."
The sex is hinted at, not dwelt upon. The violence (and there's quite a bit) is more referred to than described. But you know both are spades.
Well written. Well enjoyed. So much so, that thanks to Kindle, I now own all of this series. And am looking forward to hours with my newest hero...Simeon Grist.

HASH(0x9e2cb6b0) out of 5 stars It's a keeper! Sept. 29 2010

This may have been his first novel (even if it was published AFTER his second and third novels), but it sure doesn't read like it! A great story and great characters, both the good-guys and the bad-guys. A page turner and characters you love, what more can you ask for. This book is a steal at $2.99!

HASH(0x9d7c6390) out of 5 stars Skin Deep Oct. 12 2010

"Skin Deep" by Timothy Hallinan was the first of 3 in a series with the character Simeon Grist. It explores LA's underbelly of Hollywood, actors, and strip clubs. I'm not sure who Toby represents in "real" life, if any, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to meet him. I loved the way Timothy Hallinan used descriptive language. I've included a few sentences out of context because I think they're great and you can read these out of context and still get the visuals they suggest. So here they are:

"last thing I digested was my backbone"
"We were surrounded by money but the money hadn't been able to intimidate the heat"
"I felt like a counterfeit twenty"
"My tongue felt like a supernatural prankster had sneaked in during the night and inserted it into one of those sheepskin seatcovers that sports car drivers for some reason covet"

All in all a good read and I would recommend all in the series. After those, be sure and read Hallinan's series that take place in Bangkok (the latest one "The Queen of Patpong") but I would recommend you read in order.

HASH(0x9d97f4a4) out of 5 stars Simeon Grist does it again April 13 2012

Skin Deep was a look at some of the more tawdry aspects of show biz. Memorable characters and lots of action keep the reader engrossed to the end. I really enjoyed this book, especially since Simeon Grist was an old friend. I used to think that series of novels based on the same primary character would be boring, but Timothy Hallinan changed my mind. I look forward to more on Simeon Grist's life and loves.

HASH(0x9d97f720) out of 5 stars Before Poke Rafferty, there was Simeon Grist Jan. 26 2011
By Neal Reynolds - Published on
Format: Hardcover
While I think Timothy Hallinan truly hit his stride with the Poke Rafferty series, this, the 2nd Simeon Grist novel I've read, is a well paced PI story with sufficient humor to keep it light in spite of it's dealing with a serious subject, male brutality towards women. Grist has an overly educated PI is a quite enjoyable character, and this particular volume has a nicely ironic ending.
