Amano has few peers in the realm of Japanese illustration -- Katsuya Terada and Katsuhiro Otomo are the only artists who have a similar talent and popular appeal, and Otomo basically retired when his career as a film-maker detonated. This beautiful three-volume set from Dark Horse collects Amano's conceptual art for Final Fantasy (obviously), a very specific focus which includes art that is fully-painted, intricate, and suitably epic, as well as rougher, sketchier work.

Dark Horse has collected three hardcover volumes -- each one devoted to an instalment of the Final Fantasy video game series -- into one of the most exquisite, silk-covered box-top slipcases I've ever seen. While the complete lack of biographical or critical writing makes each book seem a little hollow, and a good amount of the art is pretty far from prime Amano, the materials, page-count, design and pricing make this a purchase you're not likely to regret.

There is nothing in this set that could be considered an example of Amano's best work; but there is some endlessly fascinating imagery, even for those who -- like me -- never got into the video games, and absolutely hated the movie. Like the just-released art-book on Katsuya Terada, this is another excellent book by Dark Horse. They have production standards far higher than DC or Marvel, charging considerably lower prices for considerably better books.

Nice large sized offering of artwork from the man who helped give final fantasy its look and feel that has persisted over the years. Nice collection and a truly great item for any hard core fan of the game series.

In 2012, Dark Horse released the first edition of The Sky limited to 1000 copies. Many who pre-ordered were left sorely disappointed when their books did not ship when the shipping date went by. 1000 limited copies for fans of Final Fantasy, a game series that has over millions of fans. Now that's truly limited.

Well, it's all good now. Dark Horse has released, this time, a non-limited edition of The Sky that is more easily available. Although there are no additional goodies with this release.

This is a slipcase set with three hardcover books. The cardboard slipcase is covered with some silky fabric with a beautiful print across and to the back. It's very sturdy cardboard and even has a cover for the opening. The presentation is very nice.

Inside the book there are the three large format artbooks. Volume 1 collects works for FF I-III, Volume 2 for FF IV-VI and 3 for FF VII-X. This is a collection of artworks from 1987 to 2001. Altogether, there are 576 pages.

This box set might not be what you're expecting depending on the type of FF fan you are.

I suspect there might be a group of fans or designers looking for art that is closer to the games. You know, like those art-of books typically released alongside games? The Sky is not like those artbooks. There's no full list of characters or enemies, environment art (I'm still looking for these), weapons, vehicles or promotional art.

The focus in on character designer Yoshitaka Amano and his character designs. There are over hundreds of drawings of characters and enemies in the unique Amano style of art.

It really interesting to see, for the first few games, how those dot matrix game sprites are translated into or from the concept art.

The box itself is like a piece of art!
I'm very impressed with both the quality of the prints and the content. It has all the artwork from my favorite Final Fantasys and many that I have not seen before. The binding is well done (I mention this because I have seen many art books with weak bindings that you have a feeling if you open it more the pages would fall apart). The only minor drawback for some might be the lack of information, there are only occasionally names of the character next to the art but not much else (though it doesn't really bother me). As a big fan of Final Fantasy IV and VI that loves Amano's unique art style, this is a must have item.

Being a massive Final Fantasy fan, I was ecstatic when I found this. I had to buy it right away. The art inside is what you would expect from Amano, beautiful. There is no writing inside the books, which may be a downside for some. My only complaint is the small dent on the slipcase from the shipping, which is barely noticeable.
