Product Description

Since moving to beautiful Cedar Tree, Colorado, Emma Young, mother of one adult daughter, has worked from home doing some online bookkeeping and baking for her best friend's diner to supplement her disability pension. Life has been pretty good, that is until she received a strange phone call that starts an alarming chain of events.

Investigator Gus Flemming is hot on the trail of a bail skip with organized crime connections that bring him to Cedar Tree. Once there, the focus of his investigation lands squarely on the gently rounded shoulders of a vivacious red haired Emma, whose physical limitations have done nothing to damped her zest for life.

When it becomes clear that Emma is at risk, Gus does't hesitate to step in and protect her. Call it a job with some very hot benefits......

**Due to content of a sexually explicit nature, this book is recommended for a mature audience only.**

About the Author

Freya has always been creative. Involved in music and dance when she was younger, she followed it up with painting, cake design, quilting, and has most recently added cover design. Now the Dutch-born Canadian mother of two has found her voice - writing. Freya Barker is the pen name for a well-respected reviewer/blogger, to who - as an avid reader, the next step to pen a book of her own seemed only natural. Driven to make her stories about 'real' people, Freya's characters are perhaps less than perfect, but just as deserving of romance, hot monkey sex and some thrills and chills in their lives!

Great start to the series! Most definitely drew me in. I read all six books that are currently out and am anxiously anticipating future releases in this series.

I'm a huge fan of romantic suspense, and adored the fact that these characters were in their 40's. The hero and heroine were fantastic together. Gus and Emma had so much chemistry both in and out bed. Don’t be fooled by Emma’s physical impairment either, that woman is a force to be reckoned with.

But what really drew me into continuing this series were the secondary characters. Freya lets these characters shine so brightly, you can’t help but want to read further to witness them get their HEA.

An absolute five star read for me! Loved the writing, loved the story development as well as all the characters.

HASH(0xa261a528) out of 5 stars Fantastic Debut Novel Full of Love, Intrigue, and Spicy Lovin'! Aug. 27 2014
By Gina Sorelle - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
My biggest pet peeve in novels is a doormat heroine. The first inkling I get that the heroine is a weak-willed, wishy-washy pushover, I'm outta there. I need my heroines to be women I respect, admire, and can root for...and Emma fit that bill perfectly.

Emma is strong without being bitchy, resilient without being "woe is me," and just the right mix of sweet and sassy. She is a woman who is self-aware and comfortable in her own skin, but still very human and relatable in her vulnerability and need for unconditional acceptance and love. Loved, loved, loved her spunk, intelligence, and strong will.

Gus was a hot talking, tender-hearted hero with more than enough machismo to keep things spicy. I am almost as hard on heroes as I am on heroines and Gus passed muster. ;) He treated Emma with nothing but respect, didn't steamroll over around (not that she would have stood for it, anyway), and was protective and loving in the best possible ways. He never shied away from his feelings and had no problem telling Emma how he felt and what he needed. No games, no drama...just two mature adults falling in love and figuring it out.

Loved it. So excited for the second installment!

HASH(0xa261a024) out of 5 stars A definite recommendation............ Sept. 2 2014

When I discovered that this book was being released by someone I really liked but had no idea was a writer I was delighted for her while at the same time quite intrigued. I have to admit, before I read the book I had some trepidation, what if I didn't like it... How could I possibly tell her and hopefully not upset her? Well... I have to say that my worry was totally unnecessary, I honestly loved Slim to None.

Freya's writing and storytelling had me pulled me in from the start.... As I was reading I could clearly picture the people, the places and the things that were happening.

Being a not so young gal myself, I do love a book with an older H/h and that's what we got with Gus and Emma. Our heroine was a feisty, determined, strong-willed woman who had a lot of issues to deal with but didn't let them get her down. I felt for her at times when she experienced confidence blips, for me, this and and a few other things made her feel like a very real character... She wasn't a slinky, skinny, constantly glammed up slip of a girl as we often encounter in a romance novel and I could relate to her because of that.
Gus, ahhhh Gus.... Hot, sexy, knows what he likes and what he wants. He's a guy with a good heart, he's thoughtful, patient, protective and loving but has his own demons to deal with!!
I liked this pair together, they worked for me - from their initial encounter, to their developing relationship, I could see it happening..... I enjoyed the intimacy between them - the sex scenes were hot but, best of all, they were believable!!

The storyline was good and kept me engaged. There was mystery, suspense, some twists and turns and a fair bit of action! The supporting characters were likeable - from Emma's friends and family, Arlene, Kara and Seb to Gus's team, Dana, Caleb, Neil and Katie, they gelled and bounced off each other well.

I'd definitely recommend that you give Slim to None a try. It gets a solid 4.5* and I can't wait for more in this series!

HASH(0xa29d6840) out of 5 stars One Amazing Journey Jan. 25 2015
By Romance Reader - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I am an enormous fan of stories and characters that are different. What Freya has done is break the mold, write about real people, characters that you see, and in your imagination you feel you can actually reach out and touch. This story is about a real woman, and one hell of a journey. And while yes, it is hot and steamy and that is QUITE enjoyable to read as well, it's also so much more. It's the MORE in the story that moves it from a four-star read to five. It takes talent to be willing to tear into a story and talk about those things that make us human - the real, raw and gritty stuff. I don't do spoilers, that's what the synopsis is for, but what I can tell you is that this book is one that will make you feel, and if you'd like to read a love story that's about you--every woman--not just the perfect ones with the glamorous life--this book's for you! Hell, it's for all of us.

HASH(0xa25bc2dc) out of 5 stars Amazing additon to your collection! July 20 2015

This is my first time having the pleasure of reading a book by Freya Barker. I am just in awe as to how in love with this story I am. Slim to None is a beautiful tale of finding love even when you don't feel deserving.

I love love love that the characters are not 22 year old perfect body college students with no real issues like so many romance novels are based on. The characters are so complete with believable bodies, at believable ages, and are forced to face issues that are believable. It's a breath of fresh air to read about a couple who is also perfectly imperfect, but perfect together. He has a dark past filled with remorse, guilt and regret, she has had a hard live causing her to feel unworthy of compassion in feel of it resulting in pity. Together, they kick butts all while maintaining a tense level of chemistry that makes you want to believe in love at first sight.

If the love that you have for the characters is not enough to draw you in an keep you turning pages like you are in a fit of fury, then Ms. Barker bases the entire plot on a very exciting and suspense filled rollercoaster of events. I was literately at the edge of my seat the entire time afraid to set my book down not wanting to leave my characters in a compromised position. Although there is a fair amount of SMUTT in this book, it could 100% hold it's own with out the sex scenes. Once again too often a hard find when you read romance novels.

I highly recommend this book! If you love romance, suspense, excitement, mystery, or just love to read.. then this book will be an amazing addition to your collection. I can't wait to read more by Freya Barker!

HASH(0xa261a924) out of 5 stars I would really love to give this book a 4 star review Nov. 30 2015

I would really love to give this book a 4 star review. The story was sweet, with just enough danger & some pretty good twists & turns, & heat to keep me interested. Unfortunately, the book really needs a good proofreader. But I admit, I'm a little more picky about things like that than a lot of readers.

I did enjoy the story enough to give the next book a try. Hoping I won't be disappointed when I read the next book.
