I'm now convinced Aran is my gluten-free Godmother. She has managed, in this one book, to combine healthy gluten-free recipes that are easy to make, taste great and are good for you. I have only had this book a week and have successfully made six recipes all with fantastic results. The recipes are easy to understand and follow; the bonus being each has tasted wonderful. My kids have loved everything that I have made and have contributed many a bookmark with their picks of what they'd like to try. Needless to say, between all of us there are 20+ pieces of paper sticking out of this book. I don't own any other cookbook I can say that about!
Especially helpful is the section, included at the beginning, outlining the different flours, sugars, chocolates and other ingredients used. With each is a brief description as to why they have been selected.
Favorites so far include: roasted cauliflower and leek soup, chocolate hazelnut & buckwheat cake, caramel poached pears and meringue, orange and roasted beet salad, quinoa cranberry scones and candied apple clafoutis.
Baking has always been a challenge for me, especially true now that I have to eat gluten-free, and this book has given me the tools, inspiration and confidence to bake my heart out! 'Thank you' will never be a strong enough phrase to tell Aran how much this book has meant to me.
This is a must for any cooks out there and a necessity for any who are gluten-free!!
The combination of the personal stories and photos really evokes a sense of each season and the importance of sharing food around the table with others. I am most excited to come back to this book again and again and explore the world of gluten-free cooking more fully.
Recipes are all very high quality. Some of the recipes I have tried so far include the Crispy and Creamy, Mushroom and Potato bake (I am vegetarian and did not try but significant other enjoyed), Hazelnut Butter Toffee Chocolate-Chip Cookies (delicious), Chocolate Hazelnut & Fleur de Sel Pots de Creme (Amazing - I have made this twice), the celery root and sweet potato crumble, the Spiced Pear & Brown Butter Muffins (mmmm), The Swiss Chard & Gruyere Tart (though I used spinach), and the Seeded Bread. All of the recipes, with the exception of the Seeded Bread were delicious and I have many more recipes to try (Update: the more I try, the more I like this book. I actually use this cookbook way more than I anticipated I would with my original review). I was not a big fan of the Seeded Bread (my go to bread is from Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking and my significant other who can eat gluten prefers it to normal bread). Recipes are innovative, and feature fresh, wholesome ingredients. Note that this book is by no means low in fat. Most recipes feature ingredients like coconut milk, butter and eggs (not a bad thing, just pointing out).
I love this book and I use it frequently. Update: Now having had this book since mid-2012, I can say that this is my go-to book when entertaining (particularly for deserts: macaroons, flourless chocolate cake, teacakes - so many great recipes in here all sure to impress).
Those who are fans of La Tartine Gourmande: Recipes for an Inspired Life and The Sprouted Kitchen: A Tastier Take on Whole Foods will enjoy this one!
