There is nothing that I enjoy more in literature than looking into the life of a community – decades later, I have fond memories of the characters in Tales of the City and Stairway C.
Smileyville will be one of those books that make a lasting impression, because Murray created a cast of characters that are impossible not to like (even the pseudo-villain!). I was eager to get back to the book each night and am feeling a little sad that I will no longer share the antics of this community’s colourful people. The story behind Smileyville is credible, the multiple situations are brought to gratifying conclusions (expect a few surprises), and the author’s style is crisp and bright. A very good, fun and memorable read.

When Beaverly Modicum publisher Leon Hubaceck dies in his sleep, not only must his widow Mary deal with her grief over an occasionally difficult man but now her strong-willed daughter Ruth and introverted granddaughter have swooped onto the scene and show no signs of leaving. Meanwhile, former mayor Conrad Lemon continues to hatch schemes to put Beaverly on the map, this time by entering “Smileyville,” a contest to find Canada’s Nicest Town. But his ambitions are threatened by the Modicum and an old political nemesis, not to mention distractions on the home front. Caught in the middle of it all is Jemima MacNaught, newspaper-editor-turned-park-manager, who has concerns of her own: unsettling changes at the Modicum, something going on between Ruth and her sometimes-maybe-boyfriend Julian, and now her father has come to town and is spending time with the newly widowed Mary Hubacek… In this follow-up to A Hole in the Ground, Smileyville is a funny, heart-warming story about community, family, love and not having a choice in the matter.

Celebrating what’s unique about small towns
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2024Verified Purchase
Just finished Ross Murray’s latest book, a layered story about a small town and its quirky community. Loved the multi-generational characters and their back stories, characters I grew to love (and one I grew to loathe!), the reminder that often people we’re closest to we can just barely miss, in terms of connecting with each other fully. And we can go our whole lives with failed assumptions that prevent us from really knowing one another. It’s a seemingly simple, fun story on the surface with Ross’s exceedingly dry and kooky humor but with the depth that reminds me of Nick Hornsby, and a tender POV about humanity I think anyone can relate to. Feel like I knew these characters and saw them clearly, reminded me of me even. Highly recommend! Great early summer reading too.
