Product Description

Connor Bannon is supposed to be dead. Dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, he's spent the last two years working as a street enforcer in Brooklyn for his cousin's crime ring. Through a twist of fate, he's now in Chicago, working undercover to bust criminals. But when a cute little arsonist joins the team-all combat boots, tiny jean shorts, and hot-pink hair-Connor's notorious iron control slips.

Erin "she's getting away" O'Dea knows two things. She hates authority. And... Nope, that's it. When she's forced to operate on the "right" side of the law, her fear of being confined and controlled blazes to the surface. The last thing she expects is a control freak like Connor to soothe her when she needs it most. Worse, something behind the sexy ex-soldier's eyes ignites a dangerous inferno of desire. One that invites Erin to play with fire. And one that could get them both killed...

Each book in the Crossing the Lines series is a standalone, full-length story that can be enjoyed out of order.

I've read a few of Tessa Bailey's books and just loved them. Up In Smoke was no different for me. Conner is a former Seal and ex-criminal who joins a team of other former criminals to help the Chicago PD solve a case they can't do on their own. This is where he meets Erin, escape artist and arsonist extraordinaire.

Both come from shotty pasts and have their own internal struggles they need to overcome before they think they can connect with anyone. But instead they find themselves connecting with each other in more ways then one. They're able to smooth one another's inner demons while helping the police solve their case.

Conner dirty talks his way into Erin's heart while Erin's need for safety helps give Conner a higher purpose. Honestly I think both of these characters are perfect for each other. Their pasts have left them weary of their futures but together they learn that they can overcome more then they thought possible.

The insta-lust turned insta-love of these two combined with the tie-me-up tie-me-down sex and the dash of uncertainty Conner and Erin throw out there is spot on with the style of writing and type of book to help anyone out of a little book slump. 😍

If ever I had doubts in the past that Tessa can write smoking dirty-talkin alpha, they’re all gone now! Seriously! *giggles*

Sweet momma, Up in Smoke INDEED! Literally and figuratively…

Erin is quite a unique h with her past and condition that developed because of her past. Connor has his own baggage to bring in to this unique relationship. But oh boy, did he know how to handle Erin or what! And in the most scrumptious way that an alpha H can!

It’s insta-lust/attraction, but ask me if I care. Heck no! Ask me if I bought every single moment of it. Heck yah! Not a lot of authors can sell that idea to me, but as you can see, Tessa can.

The story itself, while not entirely unique provided enough cachet to make it work. It’s like Suicide Squad done Tessa way, or as she even described it, thru one of her characters, like a modern day Mod Squad.

And the way I felt about this book, maybe I’m reading too much into it making all kinds of presumptions, but I really like the way that Tessa almost calls herself out with her story line even before I get the chance to do so which makes it come across as self-deprecating and cheeky, and totally working for me; remarks like “the criminal version of Meet the Parents”, and the pop culture history reference like the mention of Topanga, too awesome! And yes there is intensity without laying the angst too thickly.

So did this totally worked for me? Heck yah!

While I've read Derek and Ginger's story, I've yet to read the others in this series so I have a lot of catching up, as in pronto!

HASH(0x984aca68) out of 5 stars scorching first kiss and story June 23 2015

Format: Kindle Edition
my god if i could give this book more than 5 stars i would!!! Within the first five pages of reading it on my kindle i knew i loved this book and it would be amazing. Erin is the best sort of sassy female lead and she is a total rebel to boot!!! While Connor is the calm and composed one, if Erin is fire Connor is the water that brings her inferno under control. Now do not get me wrong for all the characters in this book nothing is as it seems everyone keeps the secrets they hold close to themselves. But Connor and Erin find they can help each other and with that they build up into one of the most amazingly intimate couples i have read for a long time!!! Now let me state the first kiss they have in this book - wow!! so good. And all the sexual tension that is here is brilliant but it is there for a reason, because when this tension cracks it is so sexy, and this is even before they get intimate in the most biblical sense all the stuff they conduct before will steam up your glasses or kindle screen i not make them combust. Secrets, struggles, sexy, smoking story!!! Go read this now a book of the year for me!!

HASH(0x984acabc) out of 5 stars Steamy, intense & incredibly emotional June 23 2015

You know when you read a book by an author and you think it’s the absolute greatest thing they’ve ever written? Well, that’s pretty much how I feel every single time I read a book by Tessa Bailey. After reading the first book in her Crossing the Line series, Risking It All, I honestly didn’t think she could top Bowen Driscoll’s brooding bad boy persona and sheer sex appeal…until I met Connor Bannon in Up in Smoke. The dishonorably discharged former Navy SEAL exuded raw masculinity and more than a hint of danger, yet he was no match for the pink-haired, combat boot-wearing spitfire working alongside of him. At first glance, Connor and Erin are polar opposites, yet they had an instantaneous spark of chemistry, which, when paired with a complex emotional connection, made for an undeniably captivating story. Up in Smoke is an insanely sexy, suspenseful, entertaining read with characters that will make you fall in love with them before the end of the first chapter.

With their past run-ins with the law and an ongoing battle between right and wrong, Connor and Erin are the textbook definition of anti-heroes. The two had rap sheets that could rival the criminals they were recruited to bust for the Chicago PD, yet a different, more vulnerable side to each of them was revealed as they bared themselves to each other emotionally and physically. The banter between Connor and Erin was playful and flirtatious, rife with sexual tension and a primal attraction that begged to be explored. The underlying darkness within each of them, however, was like an invisible force, urging them to proceed with caution. For all the demons haunting Connor's past, they were nothing compared to the heartbreakingly brutal horrors Erin experienced, which is why it came as an unexpected surprise that a tough, hardened man like Connor could proceed with the careful fragility required of Erin’s traumatic situation. It was undeniably sexy imagining this take-charge, powerful male putting himself at the mercy of a woman, tempering his explicit fantasies and overwhelming desire for Erin by giving up some of his much-needed control.

While the romantic relationship developing between Connor and Erin is the heart of Up in Smoke, the narrative is equal parts romance and suspense, the latter courtesy of their undercover job working with the Chicago PD. The two are part of a motley crew of former criminals, the result of which is a fun, entertaining mix between White Collar and The Breakfast Club. Up in Smoke follows Connor and Erin as they get the chance to reinvent themselves in all aspects of their lives, and part of that was surrounding themselves with characters that could relate to them. The fact that these characters were bursting with energy and personality brought a lighthearted feel that provided a welcome contrast to the narrative’s heavier issues. Up in Smoke is undoubtedly Tessa Bailey’s most emotionally compelling book to date but it was also her steamiest, most suspenseful, and most entertaining book to date. I enjoyed every second of Up in Smoke from start to finish and I'm more than a little excited by the prospect of getting at least one book more in the series.

HASH(0x984acef4) out of 5 stars It is with great pain that I leave this review...... July 1 2015

I am going to start this review out by saying I love Tessa Bailey, I have loved ALL of her books so far......I was looking forward to this book for SO long.....and it just.....didn't do it for me. I love Connor.....but on my nerves. Because of my disslike for her, the story grated on my nerves. Even Bowen got on my nerves in this book, and I abso-freaking-lutely loved that book, and his story with Sera. I could not complete the book at this time...I skipped several chapters just to get the end so I could move on to my next book.
Believe me when I say it pains me SO much to say anything negative about Tessa Bailey's books, because, she is IT for me, one of my favorite authors....and I guess it is safe to assume that, with any author, they may potentially write a book that falls flat. So, with that being said, I am still looking forward to the upcoming releases from Ms. Bailey, and will still re-read some of her previous books because, they are that good.

HASH(0x984acedc) out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but missed the mark June 23 2015

Tessa Bailey is one of my must-read authors. And, having loved Risking it All I had fairly high expectations for Up in Smoke

This is where my inner conflict starts because whilst I enjoyed it, I’m somewhat torn over Connor and Erin’s story.

As a seasoned reader of Tessa’s work, I know that when I pick up one of her books I’m going to be greeted with a man with a delightfully dirty mouth, a feisty lady driving him crazy and a substantial amount of mutual pleasure between said couple. She has a formula and it generally works and whilst Connor and Erin brought all the above by the bucket load, I can’t help but feel this overshadowed what could have been a winning story.

"Kiss me. Just...don't touch me, okay?"
"Jesus. You've got the wrong guy for that sweetheart."

Erin wasn’t the character I was expecting. With confidence, fight and fire (no pun intended even though the girl is a pyromaniac), she has a recognised psychological condition brought on by a traumatic life-event. Yet it felt underplayed; I know this isn’t real-life, but the speed and ease at which she overcame her fears was just a little too unbelievable and the deeper issue was drowned out amongst all the foreplay and sex. I never thought I would hear myself saying this, but it was simply too much and much of what I wanted to see from this story and this team of ex-cons seemed to dissipate amongst the passion.

"Look what you do to my body, Erin. It only wants to please yours. Tell me how I can do that. Tell me how to make you better, because I'm just as lost as you are."

But there's no denying Connor and Erin were good together, I just struggled to become invested in them. And it was lovely to see how past favourites were doing; Bowen made me smile, I still love Sera, you will never get a grumble out of me where Derek Tyler is concerned and I continue to very much like the dynamic of the group. I just would've liked a little more focus on the action/undercover side of the storyline.

But, onwards and upwards as I am looking forward to Austin and Polly’s book. An intriguing master-of-disguise and a hacker? Should be interesting.

HASH(0x984b03b4) out of 5 stars I love Tessa's books, but this wasn't my favorite. Insta-Everything here. Connor and Erin were hot together though. June 23 2015

Review for Ramblings From This Chick.

I am a huge fan of Tessa Bailey's and I have had her on auto-buy since I first discovered her. She always has the best dirty-talking alpha heroes and I cannot get enough of them. I will admit though that I struggled a bit with Up In Smoke. I knew a little about Connor, having met him previously in her books, and I wasn't too sure what to make of him. While I did like some things about him, this story wasn't exactly what I had been expecting.

Given little to no option, Connor Bannon and Erin O'Dea end up on the same team working undercover in Chicago in order to avoid being locked up. Their team is a modern day mod-squad, with each team member having some kind of specialty and being forced to work together when they prefer to work alone. Connor is a former Navy SEAL and Erin is an arsonist, and the sparks between them are instant. But where Connor needs control in his relationships, Erin is unable to give when it comes to relationships. She doesn't let anyone close, and she always has her escape planned. But when they continue to grow closer while working together, they realize that the connection between them is worth taking a chance on.

Connor is everything I have come to expect from a Tessa Bailey hero. He is sexy and alpha, and super possessive of his woman. He would do absolutely anything to protect her, and he is an amazing dirty-talker. However with all that being said, he didn't really feel any different than her other heroes to me. There was nothing that really stood out about him, and it just seemed as though he was pretty much a mix of her other heroes, and I was hoping for a bit more about him to be unique. Erin was easy to like from the start, and I loved her personality. Like Tessa's other heroines she is feisty and fun, and is able to dish it out as well as take it. I loved seeing her witty remarks, and how she didn't easily give in to others. While I did feel like Connor and Erin had chemistry, (and how could they not with them being written by Tessa?) I also felt like everything was super rushed with them. This was definitely a case of insta-everything, and unfortunately that just didn't work for me.

I thought that this one started off very interesting, and there was a lot of potential here with Erin's issues. That was something I had never seen Tessa deal with before, and I really think that was something that could have made this one a great story. To me though, things turned around far too quickly to be believable when it came to how fast Erin was able to overcome those issues. I felt like even though she was attracted to Connor and wanted things to be different that it would have taken longer for her to come around. The instant changes for these two along with the issues I had with Connor left me wanting more and being a little disappointed with this one. Don't get me wrong it still packed the heat and steam that I have come to know and expect from Tessa, but I felt the story suffered a little bit here and it wasn't my favorite of hers. I did like the team though, and I loved the feel of that group as a whole. There is such an interesting dynamic with all these criminals turned undercover teammates , and I liked them a lot. I will definitely read more from Tessa Bailey in the future, even though this one wasn't my favorite. There is no one who writes a better dirty-talking alpha than her, and I think this one was just a miss for me personally.
