2 CD Set. Smoker's delight - george evelyn--experimental sample expert, soul aficionado, club manager, dj and founding father of the trip-hop genre--is the name behind the groove collective known as nightmares on wax. As laid back as the vibe on the beaches of goa he loves to frequent, evelyn's second album displays a startling lucidity. Strings that caress and plodding drumbeats are deftly arranged to leave a subliminal sound guaranteed to soothe even the most stressful of days. Car boot soul - when nightmares on wax's debut smoker's delight was released on england's mo' wax label in 1995, it helped to solidify the label's reputation for innovative electronic dance music. Unlike the deep, uncompromising grooves of fellow mo' waxers like dj shadow though, now's was an unassuming, almost gentle sound.

The smooth rhythms and beats will hit someone who hasn't heard trip-hop (sorry G. Evelyn) /acid jazzy stuff before with a big fist to the ear. Listening to the samples here on amazon may be okay, but to really get the experience you have to get the album and listen to it completely uninterrupted - once you do, you'll want to do it again, and again, and one more time. It's anytime music, good for doing homework to, washing dishes, or just relaxin'. Absolutely wonderful, I hope more people discover this sort of music.
The music is mainly instrumental with varied low key drum/beats- it is a nice relaxed late night listen if you want something that has some soul and rhythm to it and yet is fairly laid back. There are no stand out tracks .... but the album is good overall and just hangs together nicely. I am not a "smoker" but if you were then this might be a fitting background music as suggested by it's not very subtle album title.
I have some "pure" ambient music that I also listen to at night ..... the N.O.W albums are a nice and slightly more upbeat alternative to that.
