"As a former Navy SEAL officer and FBI SWAT operator I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with snipers over the span of 20 years. David’s assessment of how the sniper mind works is as good as it gets. More importantly, he gives hope to those looking to tap into the psyche of these amazing individuals. This is an absolute must read for anyone looking to become better in any aspect of life." ―Errol Doebler, former Navy SEAL, former FBI Special Agent, and founder of Leader 193
"When the precise judgments and calculations of sniping are implemented in everyday life, your hit ratio will improve and you will achieve your goals just as surely as a master sniper calculating the next 1-mile shot. This is a terrific approach to cognition and perfectly in line with what I've learned over 30 years, moving from elite combatant to entrepreneur, where mastering anticipation is a silent weapon, and empathy and perspicacity are ammunitions." ―Michel Reibel, Former Sniper, Strasbourg, Alsace, France
"The Sniper Mind certainly makes you sit up and read with interest. David has got quite an impressive group of Snipers together and should be congratulated. David Amerland interviewed hundreds of snipers to find out how do ordinary people turn into the extraordinary and then he explains the science behind their remarkable achievements, in terms of self-control, ability to make quick decisions under extremely difficult conditions, eliminate fear. And then he explains how the very tactics the snipers use could be used in a business environment to help the readers use these proven and extremely useful techniques in their personal and business lives.
This book has plenty of historical references and interesting stories (ie it's entertaining and certainly not boring like so many business books are). It also gives you the tools and explanations and guides you on how you too can use your mind, train it, to become just as fearless, be a true leader, make hard decisions with confidence and strength and succeed in your business, even if many others can't. That's the magic of this book and why it's a must-read for every business owner, every team leader and everyone who understands that they have the power to improve their mind and thus - improve their life! This book is the guide to get you where you're going!
I was privileged to read this book before it officially came out for sale (today) and can't recommend this book highly enough. If you know you can do better, you want to do better in your life and/or your business - you can! with The Sniper Mind as your guide!
When I first stumbled across this book I was skeptical. While I saw that the author was well reviewed for other books, those books were about SEO and marketing, not the military, personal development, leadership, or any other topics running rampant through these chapters. But after having the book in my cart for weeks, going back and forth on whether to pull the trigger, I did, and I'm so glad I made that decision.
The Sniper Mind is exactly that. It explores the mindset driving snipers in the military, and gives actionable insights into how to apply some of that thinking to the "real world" -- specifically, the business world. Each chapter stands alone as a concept, but they all work together to paint the picture of a successful sniper.
The author has clearly invested a significant amount of time researching and developing this book. Numerous stories of snipers fill the pages, along with snippets from interviews. One of the most powerful quotes that grabbed me? An excerpt from a British sniper.
"...Why a sniper? Because we all want the same thing. All of us. We never say it. Not to anyone else. Not to even ourselves. But we want it. To be the best. The very best we can ever be."
That quote and countless others led to burning through more then one highlighter, and contributed to many pages of notes, before reaching the final chapter. After finishing it I'm seriously contemplating reading it again. I wanted more.
As an entrepreneur with very limited time, I looked forward to reading a little in this book each day. It changed my mindset for the day and provided perspective on the never-ending slew of challenges in my own world.
I will say, this book isn't for everyone. It's not an "easy" read, it's not a "quick" read, but it is mind-shifting. If you're looking for a book with quick answers and shortcuts to make you feel better in tough times, this probably isn't it. But if you want a book that reminds you the only real "shortcut" to dealing with tough decisions is to toughen up, sharpen your focus, commit to the long game, and maintain the right mindset, and you want to genuinely work towards furthering that mindset, then this is 100% the book for you.
At the time of writing this, I can count on both hands the number of books that have compelled me enough to leave a review. As an avid reader there have been many "good" books that should make the list, but few that move me far enough to share my experience with others.
It is one thing for an author to write a successful book within their area of expertise -- that in itself is still an admirable feat -- but this book was clearly the author pushing themselves outside of what I assume would be their comfort zone, and nailing it.
Get it. Read it. Highlight it. Live it. It will change the way you think.
Having read it, I’ve been finding myself more ensconced than before in learning (and choosing to learn) how to break down, analyze and apply the granular components that lead me to deeper understanding of how I operate day to day. And then how I can make better use of my in-built natural resources and grow useful new skills through a distinct brand of honesty that comes with this kind of scrutiny. I have found that my perspective is transforming. It's almost like being re-introduced to myself.
David has taken on this huge landscape in "The Sniper Mind". His context for this may be utilizing the particular kind of training undertaken by military, snipers and other elite performers but what he is outlining is straightforward and applicable to all of life for each of us.
When you read it you will….
Gain tips on how to pay attention, how to see better and absorb what you are looking at so you can make use of it and put what you know into action.
Get actionable understanding of how the brain works in ways that will support your growth as a human being and a business person.
One of the core contentions of this book is that the sniper’s mind is not born, but made. Amerland explores the neuroscience behind the transformation that a sniper goes through in training and over the course of long and extremely difficult hours in the field. The book is peppered with engaging stories about individuals making heroic efforts to save their comrades from horrible situations. The stories don’t glorify war and neither do they dismiss its horrors, but they do give you a much better understanding of these extraordinary people who train and train and train as elite snipers.
I am in the process of deepening my meditation practice and have become increasingly focused on the balance of attention and awareness that goes into expanding mindfulness. So, it’s been extremely interesting to experience some of what Amerland is describing in terms of the mind’s ability to sharpen its focus through training over time. The quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn in the book gets to this: “Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, nonjudgmentally. It’s about knowing what is on your mind.”
I recommend reading this book. The sniper stories act as a kind of fuel that keeps you moving through it, so it ends up being a quick read. Over the course of reading this book, you start to put together a much better understanding of how it is that the human mind can be trained over time to accomplish amazing feats and perform on a whole new level. I’m not guaranteeing that you will emerge with a sniper mind, or that you will necessarily come away making better decisions. But you will understand that it is possible and you will have a roadmap for helping you to get there. The training part is up to you.
David Amerland’s The Sniper Mind teaches you how to create new neural pathways to sharpen your senses, build your body to respond to stimuli, focus, create the best mindset to make critical decisions on the spot, increase awareness, be mindful of the present, manage change, deal with uncertainty, reduce fear …
The benefits of reading this book and putting suggestions into practice will not only change your business but change your life.
I call it the key to personal sustainable growth. This book is guidance for becoming you, in and outside of business.
