Once everyone was seated at their desks, Mr. Gavin began to talk about snow science. He held up a glass of water and began talking. “When water vapor gets cold enough, it freezes.” The children listened carefully as he began to explain how snow was formed. In a few minutes, he told the children to take a “wiggle break” so he could talk to the office. The children clustered about the window to peek outside. The snow was blowing so hard they couldn’t “even see the playground!”
A blizzard had begun and the children’s eyes widened with fear, but Mr. Gavin assured them they were “perfectly safe.” Not everyone felt comfortable and Lily began to cry. Bel decided it was time to talk about the weather. “Hold on!” she exclaimed to Lily and the rest of the class. “Weather isn’t so scary once you understand it!” Bel closed her eyes, bumped her fists together and began to talk about weather and that raging blizzard outside. Do you know how what a blizzard is? If you don’t, you’ll know after Bel tells you about them in this book!
This is a fun tale that features Bel the Weather Girl talking about blizzards. This is a beginning chapter book the newly independent reader will be able to tackle with a bit of assistance. Throughout the text there are snowball-shaped sidebars offering up safety hints or discussing key concepts about the weather. For example, we do learn how to keep safe during a blizzard by keeping “blizzard supplies on hand during the winter.” A few supplies are mentioned. In the back of the book is a recipe for making play snow, an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.
