HASH(0xa01c50b4) out of 5 stars So many twists! May 5 2014
By India Drummond - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
There were so many twists in the plot of this epic fantasy that I never knew what was going to happen next. Never predictable, the story was still believable and the characters relatable. I loved Jora, but oh my gosh, the terrible things that kept happening to her. Just when it seems like someone couldn't take any more, another disaster struck. Still, the constant testing made her into a stronger person, and I really enjoyed watching her evolve and grow as the story progressed. KC May kept me guessing until the very end. I'm already dying to read the next one!

HASH(0xa01c5108) out of 5 stars "Song of the Sea Spirit"... the Pros and Cons... 4 Stars May 21 2015
By R. Nicholson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
"Song of the Sea Spirit" is the first book of an epic fantasy series, 'The Mindstream Chronicles' by author K.C. May.
This Kindle e-book was approximately 300 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at time of writing this review.

Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

General Theme (minor spoilers)

The landmass of Aerta has been at war with its surrounding neighbor for a hundred years. The cause of this ongoing hostility is the 'Tree of the Fallen God' located on the Isle of Shess (really a peninsula) in the realm of Serocia. This tree bears a pod called 'the Godfruit', that reportedly grants its eater special effects for a short period of time. The cause of the conflict is that Serocia's neighbors either want to destroy the tree or have it for their own use.
This tale revolves around two individuals (Jora and Boden) who through no fault of their own, have become intimately involved in the latest goings-on regarding this mysterious and strange tree.

Some thoughts on "Song of the Sea Spirit"...

The Pros:
1.) well written and tightly edited.

2.) the characters are well developed over the course of the novel, giving the reader some heroes to remember.

3.) a unique and intriguing 'magic' ability. Slowly developed and explained as the main protagonist learned more of her 'skills'.

4.) after a somewhat slow and benign start, a tale that featured a steady increase in intrigue and tension. One of those books I found hard to put down.

5.) some great encounters... graphically, but not excessively described.

6.) map... a beautifully rendered map giving the readers (and maybe even David Dalglish... lol) a sense of distance, direction and topography. Maps... the icing on the cake for any fantasy tale that can take a story to that next elusive level of quality. Thank you K.C.

7.) cover art... a stunning image, reflective of the gist of the theme of the tale within.

The Cons:
see impressions below.

Impressions: <spoiler-ish material to follow... read at your own risk>

After an admittedly slow beginning, where the players and the plot were introduced, I thought that this tale by K.C. May was without a doubt, her finest to date. The story, the characters, the magic system, the clandestine plotting were brilliantly constructed and brought forth with an impeccable sense of pace and timing. This book was one of the finest examples of story telling I've read in ages... I could barely put the book down; I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what happened.

And then... the end sequence. Where a series of what I'd describe as unbelievable** occurrences (with both Jora and Boden), took much of the luster off the superb tale that comprised the initial two-thirds of the book. The 'magic' system employed was evolving brilliantly when the author (IMHO) just took it a step too far... just too much over the top; where it became confusing and I became confused and, to be honest, disappointed in the direction that story seemed to be going.

** unbelievability... yes fantasy by definition is, I suppose, 'unbelievable'. I guess my concerns occur when the 'unbelievable' events and actions go beyond the reasonable and expected norms for unbelievability within the context of the setting of the tale.

This was an end sequence where I spent time wondering if the author was really happy with it. Was it rushed? An area of the book where a really good Beta reader might have had some niggling misgivings about these developments and then maybe decided not mentioned it, or had his/her concerns ignored.

Oh, this was soooo close to being perfect.

In any event, this tale shows what K.C. May can do with a great tale and her imagination. Her skill with prose has her poised to ascend to the top of the fantasy adventure genre.

As it is... 4 Stars.

I really liked this story, I am an avid reader and I like tales that stand alone in their story line. I am not giving spoilers, this book makes you think a bit on the heroine s decisions and I like that. revenge or justice...what would you do?

My thanks to the author for a great story at a great price, I look forward to the next book and thank you for making this a complete story, while I look forward to see what Jora does next.

This is one of the best pieces of indie fiction I have ever read. The story moved beautifully, the images and details were so well written, I felt like I was there. Very, very creative magical system. Really awesome, well drawn characters kept me turning pages. I seriously cannot wait for the next book!
