Import 180gm vinyl LP re-pressing of the singer/songwriter's 1971 album. Nine tracks.
Cohens third album is his most emotionally intense, dark and moving. Songs like "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Avalanche" are haunting and among the iconoclastic Cohen's most enduring. -- S. Duda --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Other musician seem to like these songs more than Cohen does; for the collection Essential Leonard Cohen he selected only one track from this album, Famous Blue Raincoat. Among those who highly esteem Songs of Love and Hate is Jennifer Warnes who covers Famous Blue Raincoat on her album of the same name which also contains a duet with Cohen on a longer version of Joan of Arc.
On the soundtrack album Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man The Handsome Family interprets the same song whilst Tori Amos performs it on Tower of Song:The Songs of Leonard Cohen. Famous Blue Raincoat is very popular as Judy Collins included it on her Cohen tribute album along with Dress Rehearsal Rag and Joan of Arc. And on the appealing 1991 tribute I'm Your Fan, there is a French version of Avalanche by Jean-Louis Murat.Read more ›
"Avalanche" definitely veers on the hate side of things. Lyrically speaking, it's like stumbling across Richard The Third in an abandoned mineshaft. Toss in some stark, flamenco guitar & you get the picture. A dark start to a harrowing album. "Last Year's Man" is a fitting tribute to any old Casanova whose seen his 15 minutes come & go. If that doesn't lift your spirits, how about a nice little ditty about suicide? Don't worry it's just a "Dress Rehearsal Rag". The only thing missing is a knout & a hairshirt. On "Diamonds In The Mine" he sounds like he just gargled with Drano. Dino eat your heart out.If you're feeling angry & disgusted, crank this one up. "Love Calls Your Name" has to be one of Cohen's most epic & underated ballads, while "Famous Blue Raincoat" is perhaps one of his most devastating. Jaded sarcasm comes to a fore on, "Sing Another Song, Boys" & "Joan Of Arc" ends it all on a superaltive note.
Pretentious, cynical & pissed off---this is the sound of Cohen strumming his six-string with an open vein. He's never done anything like it, before or since.

Sing Another Song Boys is Cohen at his bitter best, its harsh chorus atypical of the of the poetic folkie's 1960s sound, pointing to later songs like Lover Lover Lover on 1974's New Skin for the Old Ceremony.Read more ›

I love Leonard Cohen but this disc just didn't rate as highly as every other one I own. Still the lyrics are masterfully written as only Mr. Cohen can do. Read morePublished 12 months ago by bill johnson
