Outstanding G Lens resolution throughout the zoom rangeThe SEL200600G features outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the 200-600mm zoom range. To achieve this outstanding G Lens resolution, it incorporates an aspherical element and five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements in a new optical design to minimize chromatic aberration that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. In addition, Nano AR Coating is used to reduce flare and ghosting. |
E200-600mm with extended reachThe SEL200600G features a versatile zoom range of 200-600mm with a variable aperture of F5.6-6.3 (wide to tele). This incredible zoom range can be further extended using optional 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters that extend the telephoto reach up to a maximum 840mm (F9) or 1200mm (F13) respectively, while maintaining outstanding image quality and AF performance. The zoom and aperture range with the 1.4x teleconverter is 280-840mm, F8-9 and with the 2.0x teleconverter is 400-1200mm, F11-13. |
DDSSM delivers fast, precise, quiet autofocus 1The SEL200600G employs Sony’s DDSSM (Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor) system which has the power and precision needed to drive the heavy focus group, ensuring that moving subjects are reliably and quietly tracked with exceptional speed and precision. High positioning accuracy means that pinpoint autofocus is achieved with blazing speed. The advanced DDSSM system is also exceptionally quiet, avoiding any unwanted noise that can disrupt an unpredictable subject like a resting bird or any other form of wildlife. The Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor (DDSSM) focus system ensures that moving subjects are reliably and quietly tracked with exceptional speed and precision. 1 When the NEX series, ILCE-3000/3500, ILCE-5000/5100, ILCE-7/7R/7S, is attached, the autofocus function is limited. |

Internal zoom mechanismAn internal zoom mechanism means that the length of the lens remains constant while zooming, maintaining ideal balance for stable shooting. Since the lens zoom mechanism is internal, it also has a high resistance to dust and moisture unlike other super telephoto lenses that are typically prone to drawing dust and moisture into the lens. The internal zoom offers quick zoom operation with light zoom ring torque and is ideal in difficult outdoor conditions. |
11 - blade circular apertureAn 11-blade circular aperture mechanism adds to the beauty of the bokeh produced by the SEL200600G lens, making it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce striking images with deep, creamy G Lens bokeh. |
ED glass reduces flare and ghostingED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements take axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration caused by differences in magnification, out of the picture. The 200-600mm G Super telephoto zoom lens incorporates one five ED glass elements to maximize resolution and bokeh, while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration. |

Using the Sony A7r iii this lens comes alive! I do mostly wildlife photography which is why I picked up this lens and happened to find a willing subject in a Peregrine Falcon! Photo attached with a 100% crop of the eye to show the clarity. It has easily exceeded my expectations and is far superior to the Sigma 150-600 lens I was using previously. I typically shoot it wide open and have no image blur aside from what I accidentally introduce in images. I passed over the 100-400 GM lens + 1.4 teleconverter for this, and I must say that I am quite happy with the results!
The only cons I'd say were that I needed to swap to the Lowepro Protactic 450 bag to fit the lens and that it's quite heavy for extended sessions.

The package didn't came the best protected but the lens was ok after all.
The lens itself is fantastic. Very sharp and very responsive. Happy with the lens so far.

My only major complaint is the tripod leg. The fact Sony still hasn't incorporated an arca-swiss leg is silly but thankfully there are third party options but that adds to the overall cost of the lens.
If you're into wildlife and birding and can afford this lens, do it.
For me the fact the lens has internal zoom makes it much easier to handle in use because its balance stays the same at all focal lengths. This helps with hand holding as well as balancing on a gimbal/ball head. The short throw on the zoom is also nice to make it easy to go from 200 to 600 with only a 90° turn. One knock on it's construction is the 100-400 has a lock on the hood which is awesome. I know the 100-400 is a "GM" lens and the 200-600 is only a "G" but with such a massive hood it'd be nice to have it locked in place. I've read some reviews that say it's "loose", I'm not sure I'd say it's any different than any other lens with a non locking hood but I'll agree it does feel like it's easier to bump when it's as large as it is. I've added a silicone wrist band (like those livestrong bands) up against the hood and it makes it snug, an inexpensive fix.
OSS and image quality are top notch with this lens. I will say when using a lens that's 12" on it's own and ~18" when on a body with the hood, you'll need some good technique to hand hold a lens this size even with OSS. Depending on what your shooting using a tripod and ball head or gimbal might be needed. But when you get a good subject you'll get some amazing images. The one negative about this lens' image quality would be it's background blur or "bokeh". It can be a bit busy at times (so can the 100-400 though) and this lens really rewards you for getting some distance between your subject and the background.

The lens is also unusual in that when you zoom in, the length of the lens remains the same. The zoom mechanism is internal. You can go from 200 mm to 600 mm in only 1/4 of a turn of the focus ring. On some brands it takes a lot more rotational movement to go from wide to zoomed in. There is very little rotaional resistance so zooming is nearly effortless.
A slide button offers three different image stabilization modes for normal, panning, and sports. A separate slide button allows you to turn the image stabilization off which is what is recommended if you are using a tripod.
The mounting shoe is threaded for both 1/4" and 3/8" SAE threads.
The lens hood is sturdy and locks firmly onto the lens.
The white finish on the lens body is in my opinion more than just a cosmetic feature, on a hot summer day it should reduce heat buildup compared to a black finish. But the white finish looks great.
The quality of construction is outstanding. I consider this a really good value for what you get. If you buy this lens you will be assured to get a lot of lens envy from other photographers.

Here is the important part: if you don’t know if this lens is right for you, look it up in YouTube. Mark Smith, Jared Polin, Alpha Shooters. Take your pick. This lens isn’t new. It’s been around for years and there are so many people who have taken it out and used it and reviewed it.
We had a great experience getting it through Amazon. The lens works, it’s a stunning piece of gear that we find very versatile. If you have the money then please buy one! The investment is worth it!
If you got your first mirrorless camera last week, wait. Play with it a year. Buy a 70-300 mm and just use that until you understand it. Then come back and look at it then.
