Uncharted Gameplay Optimized with Vita Functionality

In addition to the standard analog stick controls found in Golden Abyss, PlayStation Vita's innovative control set brings a fresh feel to the well-known acrobatic and puzzle-oriented gameplay of the Uncharted game series. Using the handheld's front and rear touch pads players can more fluidly move laterally, or up and down a wall that Drake must explore. Touch functionality is also used to make charcoal rubbings of found relics, as well as arrange puzzle pieces into the correct configuration for puzzle-solving. Similarly, touch screens can be tapped to move Drake across non-continuous surfaces such as handholds at irregular increments, dilapidated bridge planks and tricky river crossings. Tapping is also utilized as a fast means of switching weapons in combat situations. In addition to this, the motion-sensing controls of the PS Vita's internal gyroscope allows players to balance Drake as he crosses slippery logs, and serves as an aiming method when shooting at enemies. In the latter situation, just point the Vita in the direction you want to shoot, line up you target and pull the trigger.

Key Game Features

  • Experience the adventure of uniquely acrobatic Uncharted gameplay, optimized with PlayStation Vita controls
  • Touch, and tap the screen to swing, jump, and traverse non-continuous game sections, like crumbling bridges and river crossings
  • Rub the screen to take important imprints of in-game relics found
  • Utilize the motion-sensing controls of the PS Vita's internal gyroscope to balance Drake as he crosses slippery logs, and as an aiming method in shooting situations
  • Puzzle solve as you collect the relics hidden throughout the game
  • Through utilizing the technology of the OLED screen, Uncharted: Golden Abyss delivers the signature Uncharted cinematic experience on the go

Not quite done with it yet--running through it a third time to clean up the trophies.

Honestly, I don't get how Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception gets the average review score it gets, and this portable version gets a much lower one. This thing is beautiful, runs smoothly (on hard and crushing settings at least) and the new controls bring enough fresh ideas to make it such a nice surprise--won't spoil the fun by telling; one in particular is really cool, but under-used, and you are told essentially what to do to solve the puzzle.

PROs: lots of them; perfect graphics, near perfect controls (some critics gripe about too much touch controls, but I found it was easier to slide my thumb over the right stick to reach the touch screen than it would be to slide it up the the traditional controls for melee); and a story that for once does not end with some supernatural beings to fight in the final chapter (small departure, but a departure from the formula nonetheless); lots of collectibles; nice to include a map of all treasure (for a download fee, albeit a small one).

CONs: the only one I can think of is the quick time events: they are almost as annoying using touch screen controls as they are using the traditional buttons; it took a while to figure out I don't have to run my finger over the arrow prompts on screen, but rather do a short rub in the same general direction; what bugged me was that it's strictly a memorization rather than reaction effort, as the sequence never changes; this meant I failed a lot, and I saw a lot of animation repeats; it could use some more work on the puzzles, but even as they were, I found them an improvement over the PS3 iterations. Also, if you're playing on the bus, remember to turn off the tilt functionality for aiming; and remember to get off the bus at your stop...

Sony Bend developed this, so it doesn't have the level of insane polish as the other games made by Naughty Dog (ND). However, it was written, scored and voiced by all the same people. So it still retains pretty much everything you've come to love (or for those new to it will love) about Uncharted.

I'll start with the flaws. Despite promises of otherwise, they utilized a LOT of forced touch. Which is disappointed. Especially when going through the menus, because you have to swipe to change options. No tapping option, or d-pad and button control options either. It's really annoying. You'll have to swipe a lot, for melee combat and 2 boss battles and puzzles.

There is a lacking polish in the design. Meaning, ND's touches like having Nathan Drake (the main character) hold a map, or hold his book in a way that allows the player to see it are completely gone. It's just like any other game a floating menu, or floating object. When ND would have had Nathan holding it and changing the page himself. Which really breaks you out of the immersion. There's also really annoying sound effects that accompany the puzzles when completed.

The combat on crushing (the hardest difficulty) is really annoying. Especially for bosses, because the required swipes sometimes don't register properly. And you have a one try for the entire, long, drawn out battle. And they're treated like interactive cutscenes. Rather than actual gameplay. Which adds to the "game" feel of this one in comparison to the "movie" feel of the ND developed titles.

The rear touch is option for climbing, but it works more intuitively to me to climb. So that was a nice addition. The tilt aim assist really REALLY adds a lot to the game.

Super jeu. 5 sur 5
