New speed and resolution in an F1.2 lens

1

This 50‑mm F1.2 G Master prime lens is a creator’s dream, with an F1.2 maximum aperture that not only allows shooting in a wider range of lighting conditions, but also provides an extraordinary combination of high resolution, luscious G Master bokeh, and blazing autofocus. It is also remarkably compact and lightweight—for new creative freedom.

G Master resolution without compromise

The compact, lightweight FE 50 mm F1.2 GM is an ideal choice for dedicated creators. XA (extreme aspherical) elements and other advanced technologies combine to achieve extraordinary resolution and contrast from the image centre right out to the edges. Sony Nano AR Coating II subdues flare and ghosting, while a floating focus mechanism ensure optimum sharpness at any focusing distance.

Smooth, refined G Master bokeh

XA elements plus painstaking spherical aberration control at the design and manufacturing stages contribute to gorgeous G Master bokeh that can really make portrait and other subjects stand out, especially with the shallow depth of field available at the lens’s maximum F1.2 aperture. An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism contributes to beautifully circular bokeh.

Fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking

Fast, accurate focus is assured, even with extremely shallow 50‑mm F1.2 depth of field. Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors smoothly deliver high thrust to position the large, heavy focus groups for fast, accurate AF. Original Sony E-mount lens technology ensures that you get maximum performance from E-mount bodies—for both stills and movies.

Professional mobility

3.5 in (87 mm) in diameter, 4.38 in (108 mm) long, and weighing just 27.5 oz (778 g), the FE 50 mm F1.2 GM complements compact, high-performance E-mount bodies to create a system that gives serious shooters the mobility and handling. Three XA elements and four XD Linear Motors in a large-aperture lens that is surprisingly compact offer extraordinary creative potential.

Professional control and reliability

Two focus hold buttons, a focus mode switch, a focus ring, an aperture ring with switchable click stops and other controls support smooth operation. The focus hold buttons can be assigned to other functions via a camera menu. Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds linearly to manual focus control. Effective dust and moisture-resistance2 and a fluorine front element coating enhance reliability.

Lens Configuration

G Master series lenses take imaging and expression to previously unattainable levels with a stunning blend of extremely high resolution and softly dissolving background bokeh. [1] Extreme aspherical lens (XA lens)

I recently purchased the Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM Full-Frame Large-Aperture G Master Lens, and I am thoroughly impressed by its performance. As a photography enthusiast, I have used various lenses over the years, but this one stands out for its exceptional quality and versatility.

Firstly, the build quality of this lens is outstanding. It feels robust yet manageable, fitting perfectly with my Sony camera. The weather-sealing is a significant advantage, allowing me to shoot in various conditions without worrying about the lens.

The image quality is where this lens truly shines. The F1.2 aperture creates a beautiful, creamy bokeh that makes portraits and close-ups look professional and eye-catching. The sharpness is remarkable, even at wide apertures, making it a fantastic choice for low-light photography.

Autofocus performance is another area where this lens excels. It's fast and accurate, ensuring that I never miss a moment. Whether I am capturing fast-moving subjects or subtle expressions in portrait work, the autofocus is reliably on point.

Lastly, the lens's versatility cannot be overstated. It's perfect for a wide range of photography styles, from portraits to landscapes. This has allowed me to explore my creativity without the need for multiple lenses.

In conclusion, the Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM is a top-tier lens that offers professional-grade quality and versatility. It's an investment that I am delighted with and would highly recommend to any photographer looking to elevate their craft.

Ordered the lense in May 2024, got it. Something was wrong with it. Didn't work on the camera. Shipped it back for return. Never got the refund nor the product back.

Contacted Amazon customer service, made me wait until they work on it. Now it says it's not eligible for a return while I don't have my money nor the lense. Great buy.

Bought it,loved it. But,I’d really only use it for part of wedding day,and its just way too overpriced in general especially for minimal use (I like 35/85 most of the time). I returned it and bought a used 55/1.8, that does a great job for WAYYY less money (and nobody can tell so…)

Put it in and haven’t taken it off. Super fast auto focus and easy manual focus too, nice firm f stop movement. Super crisp all the way to the edges. Perfect for portraits and street, yep, it is big and heavy but that f1.2 is something to behold, creamy bokeh, great subject differentiation. Like it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 50mm I have ever used

I was quite happy with my Planar 1.4, but I dropped it. I'm not going to bore you with specs and such. There are a million videos out there for that. I will just tell you, photographer to photographer, that this is one of the most impressive lenses I have ever used. My Planar was sharp and AF was pretty fast. But this lens beats the Planar in every single aspect. Ultimately, for most people, photo quality would be viewed as similar unless you are using particular gear and appropriate viewing stations. For me, the big gain is AF speed. I never like using my 85mm GM because the AF speed pretty much sucks. This lens is lightning fast. The bonus is the extra bit of light gathering at 1.2. I shoot mostly lowlight venues. Every bit of help is greatly appreciated. I basically go in armed with this 50mm 1.2 GM and my 135 1.8 GM hanging at my hips. I go in knowing I have the best gear for the job. Do not hesitate in buying this lens. I will add that I am one of those people that despise 35mm but love 50mm. It's hard to explain, but I know I am not alone in this. I will not be paying for the 35mm GM becaue I would hardly use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every dollar.

I have owned this lens for two years and can honestly say its the best addition to my photography kit to date. Look, at the end of the day, if you are seriously considering dropping 2 grand on a lens, you shouldn't be questioning if its worth it or not, because it is. I think you have to question whether or not you have the need for it. This lens is like comparing a Sony A7iii to a disposable fujifilm camera. It's heavy, but you kind of get why (lots of glass, excellent build quality). It's crazy fast with a crazy good f stop, what's not to love about it?

If you're just shooting rando shots here and there its nice to have, but I don't think you 'need' it making it an unnecessary luxury. If you're a professional however, this should 100% be in the bag, if not, just shoot all the time with it. Buy another A7iii or A7iv just to keep this lens on it. It's so damn good. It still shocks me just how good both photos and video look with this lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Outstanding" doesn't do this lens justice
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2022

To call this lens outstanding is to do it a disservice. I have been in the Sony E full-frame ecosystem since the first A7 and have several of the G-Master lens, including the 24-70 and 100-400. I also gave other G lenses, primes and Zeiss zooms. This 50mm exceeds all expectations. It rarely misses focus when f/1.2, which is astounding all by itself. But the time it takes to find focus is nearly instant. The bokeh is surprisingly creamy for such a large aperture and it's not particularly heavy or large. I didn't think I needed f/1.2, maybe f/1.4 but probably f/1.8 would be fine. I don't feel that way anymore. This thing sucks light up like a vacuum and it is the undisputed indoor champion. Images that required 12,800 ISO and barely usable, are crisp and beautiful at ISO 400 with this lens - and that's in a poorly lit room with subjects moving about. It takes your images to the next level. Expensive? Yes, but there are few tools you can add to your setup that are more impactful than this one.

I bought this lens not because I use it at 1.2 often but because it is a perfect lens. It has no distortion great color and superb sharpness.

I use this lens in studio but also on location. The lens is pretty heavy but it’s not very long, so it doesn’t bother me much.

The times I have used it for 1.2 I’ve been in lowlight situations and it does deliver
