I have had the Sony CFD-S05 for a couple of months and it does exactly what I need it to. I have it sitting on my desk so that I can listen to a CD, tape (use Type I normal tape only) or the radio while I am working or moving around. I have used all three media and I love it. The sound is good, and all of the controls are on the front and are at my fingertips. I particularly like being able to set my CDs to repeat so that I don't need to pay attention to re-starting the player occasionally. Since I am in a small space I don't play the unit loudly so am not concerned with the volume that it will crank out. The specifications sheet states that the CD player produces sound in the 20HZ to 20,000KHz range, but I am sure that the small speakers don't produce that range. However, you might get it from good headphones. Still, it is pleasant and more than acceptable. I have played a range of types of music on the CD player and listened to two hours of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion on tape. I initially tried to play a decades-old cassette tape on it and found it difficult to close the tape player lid. However, I had no such problem with new tapes. A couple of things that could be improved include having the headphone input on the front of the unit, and having a larger indicator for the CD play mode (such as repeat, shuffle or random play) -- I need to use a magnifying glass to read the setting. However, I find this to be a good unit and heartily recommend it.

This is my second Sony CD Cassette AM/FM Boombox - my son took the first Sony system (6-7 years old) with him to university. I use the boombox with ear pods to listen to audio-books and meditation CD's - excellent sound quality. Great quality for a reasonable price.

I bought this unit today to bring to work, where my guys and I routinely break $20 radio/cd players. I wanted three things from the unit:

1. Good sound
2. iPod/iPhone connectivity
3. A cheap enough price tag so that I won't get annoyed when the unit eventually gets wrecked.

A big selling point of this model was the aux line in for my iPhone, while still retaining the cd player for one of my guys who still doesn't mind lugging discs around. The cassette player is a bit of a head-scratcher, but more on that later.

Q: How does it sound? A: Not very good. Using this thing in my workplace, I'm not asking for earth-shaking bass (and this thing doesn't have it), but I *am* asking for clean and crisp high frequencies... and this thing doesn't have that, either. It's very midrange-y, the optional 'bass boost' only really adding a sort of basso mush to the proceedings, with no real definition (one album I listened to was Rhino's meticulous remaster of Elvis Costello's 'Imperial Bedroom' via iTunes, which should be a pretty lush experience... it was not). I read a lot of reviews by people on Walmart.com raving about this thing's sound... those people are not me.

In fact, what I came to realize is that I'm not this baby's intended consumer. This unit is designed for people who want some music playing in the background, but don't want that music attracting too much attention to itself. Specifically, I think older folks (no offense!) who still have most of their music collection on cassette will be very happy to have a brand-new cassette-capable player such as this. And I have to admit that the radio reception is very good - we work in a concrete parking garage where reception is notoriously bad, but all the stations come in crystal-clear...

First of all, note that this is the CFD-S05 under a different name -- actually, under a description rather than a name. I have had the SONY CFD-S05 for several weeks now, and it does exactly what I need it to. I have it sitting on my desk so that I can listen to a CD, tape or the radio while I am working or moving around. I have used all three media and I love it. The sound is good, and all of the controls are on the front and are at my fingertips. I particularly like being able to set my CDs to repeat so that I don't need to be bothered pressing the "start" button unnecessarily. I have played classical music (Sinfonias by Waldo de los Rios remains a real treat), Gerry Rafferty, Emmylou Harris, Judy Collins and Eva Cassidy, and I just listened to two hours of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion on tape. Some things could be improved. To deviate slightly from my earlier review of the CFD-S05, I found it difficult to close the tape player lid, which tells me that the tape drive posts were not designed well. For other examples, the headphone input could, and probably should, be on the front of the unit. Also, the indicator for the CD play mode (such as repeat, shuffle or random play) should be larger -- I need to use a magnifying glass to read the setting. For the CD and radio performance, I consider the CFD-S05 to be very good and heartily recommend it.
