About this item
- The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS delivers superb Image quality throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances with two aspherical elements and one XA (extreme aspherical) element to ensure high resolution throughout the image area. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements and one ED aspherical element to minimize chromatic aberration while Sony’s Nano AR (anti-reflective) Coating II subdues flare and ghosting. For additional reach, high-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are available (sold separately).
- Four of Sony’s original XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x compared to the previous model for fast, precise continuous autofocus and tracking for stills and movies. AF tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30% which greatly increase chances of getting the shot even with subjects moving rapidly towards the lens.
- Designed with movie magic in mind and the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing, focus shift when zooming and axis shift when zooming. The XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation and independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring, make this lens ideal for movie shooting. Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures responsive and repeatable direct manual focus control.
- This lens offers outstanding optical quality and autofocus in the world’s lightest* 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 2.3 lb. (1045 grams); approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves balance, while a constant barrel length further contributes to easy, agile handling.

Unprecedented image qualityImage quality is superb throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances. High-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters2 are available. |
Exquisite G Master bokehBeautiful G Master bokeh is achieved through advanced optical design, an F2.8 aperture and a new 11-blade aperture unit. An XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision suppresses onion ring bokeh and the new aperture unit helps to deliver natural circular bokeh. Close-up bokeh is superb too, with a minimum focusing distance of just 1.32 ft (0.4 m) at 70 mm and 2.69 ft (0.82 m) at 200 mm. |
Fast, precise AF supports creative shootingFour of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x3 compared to the previous model4. When tracking an approaching short-distance runner, for example, tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30%5 compared to the previous model4, greatly increasing chances of getting the shot. |
Professional movie capabilityThe latest lens technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift when zooming and axis shift when zooming. XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation. This lens even has independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring. This lens on my Sony A1 is absolutely brilliant. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art, which is also an amazing lens, but it’s just way too big and heavy. The Sony 20mm 1.8 G is under half the weight of the Sigma, which is an easy trade for that 2/3-stop difference. In fact, after some tests I’ve discovered that the actual transmission difference is only about a half-stop between the two.
Even though they’re both 20mm, the Sony G is noticeably wider than the Sigma. The Sony also exhibits a bit of focus breathing whereas the Sigma doesn’t.
Both are super sharp lenses, but the Sony G is noticeably sharper when pixel peeping. The Sony also focuses quicker and more confidently, as well as having a much closer minimum focus distance. Often when using the Sigma with a flash to cover dancing at the end of a wedding reception, I would have to stop the lens down to around f/2.8 otherwise most shots would slightly miss focus. With the Sony G I can shoot wide open in this scenario and it almost always nails focus, tack-sharp.
If you’re looking for a 20mm for Sony FE then this is the lens to get.
I also like the round lens hood (as opposed to the pedal design on the original 70-200). I never understood why the pedal design was needed for anything longer than 35mm. This is a great walk around lens for street portrait, like at a parade for example.
I used to really dislike white lens body with the black focus and zoom rings, but have since come to like them. I suppose it can be a drawback, as it SHOUTS "Pro gear" when you may want to blend in more, but at the same time, the white reflects the heat better and with longer focal lengths, the distortion is less affected.
Over all, this is a top notch lens. Highly recommend for anyone who prefers the longer focal length zoom range over the wide angles.
Top reviews from other countries
I recently upgraded to this lens, and it has exceeded all my expectations. The image quality is exceptional, with sharpness across the entire zoom range. The f/2.8 aperture delivers beautiful bokeh and performs exceptionally well in low-light conditions, making it perfect for both indoor and outdoor photography.
The build quality of the lens is top-notch, with a robust construction that feels solid and durable. Despite its high performance, it remains surprisingly compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around for extended periods. The autofocus is fast and accurate, which is crucial for capturing fleeting moments, and the lens’s optical stabilization helps to keep images sharp even at slower shutter speeds.
One of the standout features is its versatility. The 24-70mm focal length range covers a broad spectrum of shooting needs, from wide-angle landscapes to tight portraits. This makes it an ideal lens for general-purpose use, whether you’re a professional photographer or a dedicated hobbyist.
Overall, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II Lens is an exceptional lens that delivers superb image quality and performance. Its combination of sharpness, low-light capability, and versatility makes it a valuable addition to any camera system. Highly recommended for anyone looking to elevate their photography!
Pros:
- Exceptional image quality
- Constant F2.8 aperture
- Fast and silent autofocus
A game-changing lens for Sony shooters!
