Evolved G Master F2.8 telephoto zoom

1

The full force of Sony’s latest lens technology brings stunning resolution and exquisite bokeh together in the world’s lightest1 large-aperture G Master telephoto zoom lens. With significantly evolved AF performance, the FE 70–200 mm F2.8 GM OSS II can deliver the full potential of today’s advanced still and movie camera bodies.

Unprecedented image quality

Image quality is superb throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances. Two aspherical elements, one an XA (extreme aspherical) type, ensure high resolution throughout the image area. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements and one ED aspherical element minimize chromatic aberration, while Sony’s Nano AR Coating II subdues flare and ghosting. High-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters2 are available.

Exquisite G Master bokeh

Beautiful G Master bokeh is achieved through advanced optical design, an F2.8 aperture and a new 11-blade aperture unit. An XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision suppresses onion ring bokeh and the new aperture unit helps to deliver natural circular bokeh. Close-up bokeh is superb too, with a minimum focusing distance of just 1.32 ft (0.4 m) at 70 mm and 2.69 ft (0.82 m) at 200 mm.

Fast, precise AF supports creative shooting

Four of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x3 compared to the previous model4. When tracking an approaching short-distance runner, for example, tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30%5 compared to the previous model4, greatly increasing chances of getting the shot.

Professional movie capability

The latest lens technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift when zooming and axis shift when zooming. XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation. This lens even has independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring. Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures responsive, direct manual focus control.

The lightest1 in its class

This lens offers outstanding optical quality and AF in the world’s lightest1 F2.8 70–200 mm zoom. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 36.9 oz (1,045 g); approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves balance, while a constant barrel length further contributes to easy, agile handling.

Professional control and reliability

Flexible focus control is provided by features such as Full-time DMF, Linear Response MF and a focus-range limiter. An aperture ring with switchable clicks and an iris lock provides extra exposure control. MODE 1, MODE 2 and MODE 36 optical image stabilization ensure sharp images and a dust and moisture resistant design7 plus fluorine-coated front element maximize reliability in tough environments.

the hype is real!!
This is an amazing lens. I never thought I would need this, but it is worth the money. I know it's 2x the Sigma but i have an A6700 and it pairs so well with it (36-105mm FF equivalent). it's sharp and great for sports photography (as long as you're close enough). can't way enough good things about this lens. it's amazing. Well worth the money. it's my first sony lens and i have used SIgma mostly before this. I have the 18-50mm but this lens is even better in my opinion (both are f/2.8). Anyways, this is the lens i didn't know i needed.

Let’s get this out of the way first; this lens may be a Sony G lens, but it’s a G Master lens for all intents and purposes. The build, features, linear XD AF and optical quality are basically the same as my 35mm GM. The one reason it’s likely sold as “just” a G is the 1.8 aperture (as opposed to 1.4).

This lens on my Sony A1 is absolutely brilliant. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art, which is also an amazing lens, but it’s just way too big and heavy. The Sony 20mm 1.8 G is under half the weight of the Sigma, which is an easy trade for that 2/3-stop difference. In fact, after some tests I’ve discovered that the actual transmission difference is only about a half-stop between the two.
Even though they’re both 20mm, the Sony G is noticeably wider than the Sigma. The Sony also exhibits a bit of focus breathing whereas the Sigma doesn’t.
Both are super sharp lenses, but the Sony G is noticeably sharper when pixel peeping. The Sony also focuses quicker and more confidently, as well as having a much closer minimum focus distance. Often when using the Sigma with a flash to cover dancing at the end of a wedding reception, I would have to stop the lens down to around f/2.8 otherwise most shots would slightly miss focus. With the Sony G I can shoot wide open in this scenario and it almost always nails focus, tack-sharp.

If you’re looking for a 20mm for Sony FE then this is the lens to get.

This is my first G Master lens, and I am definitely impressed. It's fast to focus, which is excellent, because I intended to use it mainly for sports photography in medium-low light. However, it is also perfect for portraits, and pet photography. With such amazing boke, it does bring out the subject and it makes it super easy to take amazing shots.

This lens replaces my 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. It's wonderful to carry around, and is compatible with the Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The constant f/2.8 aperture is awesome, and the internal zoom is just as awesome. I'm not a fan of telescopic zooms personally.

I also like the round lens hood (as opposed to the pedal design on the original 70-200). I never understood why the pedal design was needed for anything longer than 35mm. This is a great walk around lens for street portrait, like at a parade for example.

I used to really dislike white lens body with the black focus and zoom rings, but have since come to like them. I suppose it can be a drawback, as it SHOUTS "Pro gear" when you may want to blend in more, but at the same time, the white reflects the heat better and with longer focal lengths, the distortion is less affected.

Over all, this is a top notch lens. Highly recommend for anyone who prefers the longer focal length zoom range over the wide angles.

Style: w/ 24-70mm F2.8 lensConfiguration: Lens bundleVerified Purchase
This lens is a true workhorse, perfect for a wide range of shooting scenarios from portraits to landscapes.

I recently upgraded to this lens, and it has exceeded all my expectations. The image quality is exceptional, with sharpness across the entire zoom range. The f/2.8 aperture delivers beautiful bokeh and performs exceptionally well in low-light conditions, making it perfect for both indoor and outdoor photography.

The build quality of the lens is top-notch, with a robust construction that feels solid and durable. Despite its high performance, it remains surprisingly compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around for extended periods. The autofocus is fast and accurate, which is crucial for capturing fleeting moments, and the lens’s optical stabilization helps to keep images sharp even at slower shutter speeds.

One of the standout features is its versatility. The 24-70mm focal length range covers a broad spectrum of shooting needs, from wide-angle landscapes to tight portraits. This makes it an ideal lens for general-purpose use, whether you’re a professional photographer or a dedicated hobbyist.

Overall, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II Lens is an exceptional lens that delivers superb image quality and performance. Its combination of sharpness, low-light capability, and versatility makes it a valuable addition to any camera system. Highly recommended for anyone looking to elevate their photography!

Like the title suggest this is a great budget lens. It works great for the price and what you may use it for. I have had ZERO issues with it and take some great pictures for my skill level. This is no pro level lens so I wouldn’t suggest it for that type of use; but for my beginners the weight, size and portability are great for the price.

I use this lens a lot on a7iii, it's one of my favorite esp. for short trips and hikes, yielding outstanding image quality in many situations, except very dark scenes where you may need f1.8 or brighter aperture. The zoom range is perfect for my type of photography - I rarely want to shoot wider than 24mm, and the long end of the zoom range can get you good not too distant wildlife shots with good background separation. Works well for street photography (although, most primes are smaller and lighter) and portraits. For most sports, you'll need longer reach and better auto-focusing though.
