Buy this thing for noise cancelation!

Buy this thing for noise cancelation!
If you are looking for noise cancelation at its best, don't look elsewhere and buy this immediately.Of all the comments that have been said about being not enough this, not able to do that, I think they are all untrue or either an unlucky manufacturing defect. Launch products are not perfect from the start, it's bound to happen. The only thing I do not use are the microphones for making calls, so you can check online and see for yourself about that aspect.Let's break this down in points. (TLDR at the bottom)Comfort/Ergonomics:Without a doubt the most comfortable headphones I ever wore. People seem to complain that it's not as comfortable as the XM3s, I say it's pretty dang comfortable considering that I wore this thing for more than 5 hours straight and had no neck pain or itching whatsoever. The weight of these headphones is so light that when the box came in, I thought I had been scammed and the headphones weren't in the box. 250 ish grams is really light (0.55 pounds) for headphones. The ears are big enough, the line of the muffs doesn't overlap too much towards the neck and the cushion material adapts really well to your head, both on the top of the frame and on the ear muffs.Sound/frequency response:I have been mixing/mastering for multiple years on flat studio monitors. Out of all the headphones that I have or I have tried, these are the closest of being pretty much flat, once you cut 3-4 dB from the 400 Hz fader (pretty sure it's an octave bandwidth, or a little more, so it covers at least from 282 Hz to 566 Hz when you adjust it) on the equalizer in Sony's Headphones app.I have attached the frequency response curve as an image in this review. The bass is not overwhelming, (although if it's your style, it delivers with the clear bass knob, which probably covers 250 Hz and below), the highs are not too sharp and there's no spike in the high mids (2500-5000 Hz) or in the high end (above 5000 Hz).The only problem is the low mids at around 400 Hz, which thank god they have a fader for that frequency. No matter what brand you choose, low mids are ALWAYS a problem in headphones. By the way, sound separation is excellent once I made that adjustment. Thank Sony for giving you the option! The frequency response when using Bluetooth is between 15 Hz to 17 040 Hz. Beyond that, it starts to wane off. I have up to 19.1 kHz in my right ear and 18.3-18.4 kHz in my left ear, so it's not on my side. Considering that my phone has a terrible audio output (it cuts at 15 kHz), it's an upgrade for me.Also, considering on how many people listen to their music too loud for the last 25 years, I would be highly surprised that people that claim the high end isn't well defined actually know what they are talking about, and most probably don't notice the difference. Same thing with audio CODECS disappearing from the XM3 (the XM4 has 3 and the XM3 had 5), above 256 kbps at variable rate and 320 kbps at constant bit rate, you don't notice anything if the conversion was done right. Above those values, me and my friend call this "Placebo Quality". Compression and brickwalled mixes affect the quality perception GREATLY.Search NPR sound quality test online. It proves my point. So in conclusion, if the song you are listening sounds like garbage, it's because it was mixed/mastered like garbage (probably mixed nowadays because they brickwall often at this stage). These are hands down the best headphones I ever tried. Period. Including my Sennheisers that I used for multiple years.Noise cancelation:I was highly surprised at not only the sensation on your eardrum being pushed in not being super apparent compared to other models, which are quite frankly unbearable in the long run, but also the capabilities of phase canceling of these headphones (the actual term of canceling out waveforms is called phase canceling, noise canceling is a marketing term for people not familiar with audio, since the majority of people don't know what is phase).Transients (such as impacts) are impossible to isolate because they are too fast to sample and to invert the phase to create cancelation. Steady noises are the only ones that allow the headphones to sample them and invert them, because there's a processing delay. Stop hitting a table like someone I know was doing to test headphones, it's worthless. The amount that is being canceled out is out of this world compared to previous generations that I have tried. I can't wait to try them on a plane. High end will remain because it's the most difficult part of the waveform to cancel, since it's the most precise and the one that takes up the most information in a signal. I was standing next to a washing machine during its max spin cycle, could barely hear it with audio of people talking in my headphones. Without playback, you hear the high end when you're right in front of it. As soon as you close the door, it pretty much vanishes. If you have noisy neighbors or live in an apartment, buy this thing! You won't regret it.Battery life: Outlasts my cell phone by a hundred years. In 2 hours of use, not even 10% used. Specs are believable. In conclusion, buy this thing if you are looking for noise canceling!TLDR:-Super comfortable-Amazing in sound-Amazing in noise canceling and battery life matching specs

I have a pair of Bose wired QC-35 so this is my base for comparison. I bought these because I was tired of having the cable in my way all the time.

Context: I use the XM-4 mostly with my laptop but they're also paired with my Galaxy S10. The only noises I have in my environment are my wife sitting about a meter away from me in our home office and she speaks very loudly when she is in a virtual meeting (and she has quite a lot of them and the keyboard clicks. So, noise cancelling is mostly used for surrounding voice.

Let's start with noise cancelling: The Sony XM4 have about the same noise cancellation quality as the wired QC-35 but the XM4 have a white noise that is a bit bugging me when I'm not listening to anything, just using them for noise cancellation while the QC-35 do not have a white noise and can cancel noise as well as the XM4. I mostly use noise cancellation because my wife is sitting about one meter away and she very often takes phone meeting and she speaks quite loudly. The XM4 and the QC-35 cancel about 60% of her voice so when I listen to music, even at low volume I don't hear her at all.

Sound: The sound is a bit better than the wired QC-35. The bass is deep and all the frequencies are crisp and clear. I can hear every single instruments very clearly so I can enjoy my music better than ever before. These headphones should definitely be able to satisfy the most demanding audiophiles out there. Also they can play loud enough to damage your ear drums which is pretty good for wireless headphones. The sound is as good whether it comes from my laptop or my Galaxy S10 phone.

Calls using my Galaxy S10: If I receive a call on my Galaxy S10 while listening to music on my laptop (or my phone), the XM4 will pause the music and ring in the headphones. A simple double tap on the touch sensor and I can answer the call or reject it by holding a finger on the touch sensor. The quality of the audio during calls is excellent; I can hear very well and I'm told that the sound on the other side of the conversation is very good. I never tried them in a noisy environment or outside when the wind is blowing but Sony states that the XM4 will cancel most of the ambiant noise to keep the other side of the call clean.

Features: I love the many features the XM4 offer. Here are a few features I particularly like: 1. When listening to music, I just have to take the headphones off and the XM4 will automatically pause the music thanks to the proximity sensor inside the left can. I simply have to put them back on for the music to start again. 2. When I listen to music and I want to talk to someone, I don't have to take them off, I just have to start talking and the music will automatically pause and the mics on the unit will make sure I can hear what's being said so I can carry a conversation without taking them off. Then, 15 or 30 seconds (configurable) after I stop talking, the music starts again. 3. Finally, the multiple commands I can use on the touch sensor such as volume up/down, next/previous song, fast-forward/backward and more. Another feature that is nice for those who want to use it is the integration with Alexa or Google assistant. However since I do not use any assistant, I cannot comment on this.

Comfort: I have regular size ears so the cups surround them completely and do not put pressure on any part of my ears. I was able to wear them for 9 hours straight (while wearing glasses) with one short break in the middle for lunch and I felt no discomfort. Comparatively, the QC-35 have about the same size cup but the leather on the QC-35 is more comfortable than on the XM4.

App: The Sony "Headphone" app is pretty good and complete, helping you customize your headphone sound and behavior very easily. You can configure an equalizer to adjust the sound to your specific preferences, customize the function of the second button on the left ear piece, turn on/off different feature of the XM4, update the firmware, and more. If your willing to give the app GPS location permission, you can have different configuration depending on where you are, home, office, commute, etc. This is a big one for me, I'm not forced to give GPS location permission to the app, contrary to the Bose Bluetooth headphone app. With Bose, if you don't give GPS location permission, you can't even pair your headphones! I won't comment on the location feature of the XM4 since I'm not using it but I'm happy I'm not forced to give this permission.

Cons: I had to think hard to find any cons but here they are. 1. I cannot use the headphones while charging but this is minor since the battery life is so long and you can use them with the supplied 3.5mm cord but without the mic function. 2. The cushions on the QC-35 are more comfortable, softer than the ones on the XM4. I've read a lot of reviews mentioning problems with TV sound so I tested my MX4 with my Samsung Smart TV; the pairing was easy enough but the sound was constantly choppy so I would not recommend them if you want to watch TV with them.

Summary: As far as I know, as of now these are the best wireless headphones on the planet! Great sound, feature rich and very comfortable but not recommended for TV watching.

First off I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions that may appear in other reviews.
1) ANC on this headphone is truly remarkable. ANC white noise is barely audible and sound remains excellent at max ANC.
2) The touch pad works flawlessly. I was sceptical as I felt physical buttons were better, but using my other headphones with buttons seems slightly awkward now.
3) Battery life is one of the best, but note that the 38 hour claim is SBC codec and no features turned on, including ANC. Example) ACC codec with ANC tuned on is 30 hours. If you use the DSEE Extreme feature, it shortens to 18 hours. I'd suggest looking at the battery life numbers in the manual before purchasing. There are many different numbers dependant on features and codecs used. It's under Power/Charging/Available Operating Time
4) For me personally the XM4 is the most comfortable headphone I have worn to date. I can easily wear for hours on end. Ear cups are spacious and deep enough for my larger ears.
5) Some features may not appeal to you, but I really enjoy the auto pause feature when removing the headphones. It worked every time and never stopped the music accidentally when moving my head, yawning, etc.
6) Build quality is really good with nice materials and a solid feel.
7) The custom EQ is a nice bonus. When you set the EQ in the app it's saved into the headphone and is relevant on all devices used, unlike other brands.

This leads me to how they sound. Sound can be subjective, but for a BT closed back headphone the XM4 is really, really good. I listen to all types of music and the XM4's handle it all well. Is the XM4 audiophile quality...not really, but it's not really meant to be. The XM4's are for folks who what a fun sound signature. They're tuned for the general public, not critical audiophile listening sessions. I've been using them for three months and really enjoy the sound, it's fun and energetic. It's maybe not as open, detailed or spacious as an audiophile set of headphones, but for it's intended use it did meet and exceed my expectations. For reference I also own Bose, Beats and Sennheiser headphones.

One negative I experienced was using XM4's to watch TV (newer Samsung) paired via BT. They were unusable after a few minutes and lag became worse as video played longer. My other headphones work fine with the TV, so maybe it's a firmware update in the future? I've read this can be an issue with XM4's on certain TV's. There was no unacceptable or noticeable lag on other devices I own, iPhone and MacBook.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the XM4's and would definitely recommend.

So happy with this purchase. I researched extensively and was between these and the Bose ones of comparable quality but these seemed to be a bit better in terms of the technology used etc. My only thing is that they feel a smidge loose on my head so if i were to lean back they’d likely start slipping, not that i need to lean back with them on. I also don’t wear these to the gym or anything. I wear these around the house, on airplanes, walking around cities, etc. the noise cancelling is excellent for planes and the ambient feature is excellent when on public transportation or walking around outside. The battery life is incredible, 30 hours. I actually love the touch screen aspect of the volume control etc. they’re very comfortable and can be worn for very extended periods of time. I’ve worn them for 9+ hours and have had no discomfort. That might be why they seem a bit loose though. Either way, so glad I made this investment, i can’t imagine listening to music any other way. For reference and context the headphones i was using prior were Bose in ear ones which are very uncomfortable for me but fine for the gym as well as skull candy over the ear headphones which in my opinion are not good but i wear them to the gym, but the sound quality is kinda garbage. I also listen to a lot of metal and it sounds great on these. You can customize how music sounds using the Sony app. Highly recommend these!
