Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
5 out of 5 stars
Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
Let's start by the obvious: These are a very, very expensive pair of headphones. They're the most expensive ones I've ever bought, and I've owned plenty of them. BUT... they're worth every penny. Let's go into the reasons why:Addressing the obvious: noise cancelling. I've tried other brand's premium ANC cans including Bose's, Sennheiser's and B&W on a store before pulling the trigger for these. I was unsure the difference was going to make the price difference worth it (Besides Bose's, the others were around $100 cheaper). But they absolutely blow the competition out of the water. They're the only pair that managed to consistently muffle not only low frequency humming noises, but even lower human speech to a level low enough that, when listening to music at the office, I'm unable to hear if someone is calling my name a meter away.Which brings me directly to the premium functions that the fantastic Headphones Connect app brings to the table. Adaptive Sound makes it so I can wear these while walking on the street, while being able to hear if a car's honking at me, or an ambulance is speeding towards me. There's a fantastic option that allows the noise cancelling to filter voice from the rest of noise, so if you work in an office with loud AC humming, you can still hear your colleagues talking. Or, if you're on an airport waiting to get on a plane, you can hear when they call your rows for boarding. And then, once you're about to board and you need to talk to the crew, you can just put your hand on your right earcup and something magic happens: Your music's volume is toned down, and every sound around you is as clear as if you had your headphones off. And, as soon as you take your hand off the earcup, everything goes back to normal. And, now that we're on that right earcup's topic... The much feared touch controlls. I have to say that, in my personal experience, they work just great. I've had one instance in which I accidentally skipped a song while I was trying to change the volume, but not nearly as terrible as people make them seem. We'll see how they behave this winter, but I read on a few places that the new units have the cold phantom touch issues fixed. I'll make sure to update the review otherwise.Sound-wise the headphones are not nearly as flat than the Bose's or Sennheiser's, but since the app has a great EQ you can tweak the sound to your liking. They sound warm, with great, deep and rumbly bass, slightly muffled mids (not too much and fixable through EQ), and balanced treble. I mostly listen to electronic and indie music, so your mileage may vary, but as I said they're highly customizable so I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find a sound that fits you.Regarding their comfort, they're not as comfortable as Bose's offering, but they're much better than most headphones out there. Super light and with good padding, the only thing that makes me take them out is that the earcups get a bit hot sometimes. However, I'm sure that I could wear them for a whole transatlantic flight without issues, since I've worn them through a whole working day at the office already, with a couple 10 minute breaks to let my ears breathe. They include a great hard carrying case, a 3.5 to 3.5 jack cable to connect them to any device that has no bluetooth, and a (way too short) usb-c to a charging cable. Yes usb-c ALL THE THINGS, it's great, but they could've definitely included a cable that's longer than a couple inches.Overall, amazing headphones, and you absolutely get what you pay for. I would recommend to anyone who spends a big part of their day on noisy environments. If that's not you, you can probably find better sounding cans for less, but if you could use some ANC on your life, these are DEFINITELY the best you can get as of today.

I usually don't write amazon reviews but these headphones have impacted me quite strongly so I must do one.

Prior to getting these, I had used both the bose QCii headphones and beats studio 3 but both were not a great fit for me. The bose were SUPER comfy but the treble-centered sound quality was not to my liking. With beats on the other hand, I actually enjoyed the heavy bass sound but they were very uncomfortable, hurting my ears only after 15 minutes of use. Furthermore, noise cancellation on beats didn't feel worth the price, as the noise-blocking from OFF and NOISE CANCELLING didn't feel drastically different.

With these Sony headphones however, i truly feel like im getting everything I ever wanted in a pair of noise cancelling headphones. Not only are they comfy but through the app, you can use the EQ to customize the sound quality to EXACTLY how you like it (you can make it sound like a bose or beats headphone by adjusting modes). Aesthetically too, these headphones are by far my favourite out of all the headphones I've tried. From looking at the photos, I wasn't a fan of the 'red' logo on the black headphone but was happily surprised to find that in person, it's rose-gold/bronze. This accent is very pretty and adds an extra 'luxury' factor to the headphones. The case zipper is also rose gold and looks stunning! Noise cancellation is amazing too. If you have airpods pros, I would say that the noise cancellation power is a similar strength (but of course the sonys would block out more net noise in the end because they're over-ear).
Overall, these headphones are CRAZY and listening to music on them legit makes me EMOTIONAL cuz the sound hits so good.

Now for the cons that I've noticed and irk me. These don't affect me as much because there are more features I like, but some of these cons may make or break it for some people:

1) When you facetime/talk on the phone, ambient sound comes in and you can't customize this. So for example, if you were walking on a busy street and had your noise cancelling on to listen to music, but then picked up a phone call, your noise cancelling would turn off, and you'd be able to hear all the loud street noise even though you're trying to focus on your phone call.

2) Sometimes bluetooth connection cuts off for 2-3 seconds and then reconnects. only happens maybe 1 time every 3 days? It's not too frequent

3) You can't connect more than 1 device to the headphones so switching from device to device can be a time hassle sometimes

4) There is a 'beep' sound everytime you do a touch-sensor control. Eg everytime you swipe up to increase volume, theres a beep. Not a fan of this

TLDR: If you are looking for headphones that will make your music HIT you (and you can get over the cons mentioned above) GET THESE HEADPHONES. You will not regret it.

Update:
Rating changed to 5 star again.
My original one is broken after it fell from my head.
Sony is nice enough to replace it.

2nd one is going for 1 year now. This headphone became extension of my head and ears. I wear them all the times.

The app is improved and noise cancellation improved a lot.

Used it 24 hours of flight. Very comfortable.

I recommended it again and again.

Update: Changing rating to 2.5.
As I live in Toronto, I started noticing the headphone stopped working even under -5 degree. If you pay 450$ for a headphone, you expect better quality from it.
Not changing the rating until Sony do something about it.

Update:

After 1 month, I've found that sometimes the headphones feel hot around your ears when you are using for a longer period of time.
Just another annoying problem but it's not a real problem as it does not occur frequently.

____________
For me, it was a necessity not luxury. I commute via a packed train where they always announce the destination a few km apart. Plus in my office people are always on the phone in a meeting.
As a Software Engineer, I have to find a quiet zone to concentrate and be productive.
So I was looking for a noise cancellation headphone to save me from noise pollution around me.

Initially, I was looking for bose quiet comfort ones as I have used other bose products they were my default choice.
Being a music listener for 30 years one thing I learned is that you can buy 20 cheap headphones and will never be satisfied.
Or you can invest some money upfront which will save you a lot over the years.

Anyways long story short, I was going through all the reviews in amazon and youtube. People are comparing BWs, Bose and Sony. Those are the top choice.
Then I saw Nuraphone. Almost bought that, then I reasoned with myself. Music is not my top priority. Noise cancelation is. and I will wearing it many different places, so If I can't walk with Nuraphone as one reviewer described then what's the use. Probably will buy the nuraphone in 1 year.

Meanwhile Sony 1000 XM3 is clear winner in noise cancellation.

I've tested the quite comfort one, as soon I put them on with noise cancellation I felt uncomfortable. Plus I was not impressed by the performance.

Here is the where I've tested my Sony one's

1. Noise PC sound - Completly Blocked out
2. Blocked sounds of cars passing by in less busy streets.
3. In office you can't hear people having conversation a few meters away.
4. In the train, you can't hear anything except muffled announcement. It was a pleasant experience. Worth the money.
5. Driven car in busy street, 95% blocked all the noise.

Overall sound quality is very good.
I had few problems with call, people on the other end was complaining like I'm talking through a speakerphone. But it's resolved once I updated the software and rebooted the headphones.

Call quality is quite good. You can have silence and give an interview sitting in a busy street.

Here are some caution to the new buyers.
I felt little bit agitated and annoyed after using it first time for hours. Second day it was good. Not sure if the
noise cancellation side effect was acting upon me.

If you walk or drive with this on, with noise cancellation, be very very cautious. We rely a lot on ears when we move. If you shut down the world and try to walk in busy intersection you will see what I'm talking about.
I almost bumped on couple of people as I didn't notice them.
Don't drive with putting these on.

Anyway, I've used it for 8-10 hours and battery life is 50%. So I don't know if I'm gonna get 30 hours as advertised.
Still pretty good for me.

That's the only flaw I found in these headphones.

Oh the App is crappy. I guys Sony will improve it. And in the next few update they will add more features.

5 star form me. If you have the money just buy it.

noise cancellation is good for low constant noises, like a train or a fan, not great for high pitched or sudden noises- but better than nothing. sound quality is excellent as a non-audiophile, much better than any earphones/headphones i’ve tried before (bar airpod maxs , but price lol). comfort is excellent, apart from when working out and walking, which has a slight issue with sweat buildup. they’re okay for walking but for heavy cardio i don’t recommend these (try some earbuds). great carry case too. battery is also very good, i charge it like once a week.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOS MEJORES AUDIFONOS PORTATILES EN EL MERCADO
Reviewed in Mexico on April 23, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Best noise cancelling headphones I've every tried
Reviewed in the United Arab Emirates on June 25, 2019

As someone who owns Bose noise cancelling headphones, these new headphones have blown me away. The noise cancelling is a noticeable step up from the QC 35 I currently. It's light (a tad heavier than the Bose), comfortable (I usually can't stand having most headphones on for a long time as my ears tend to get sore - no issues 3 hours in with this pair), and have a sound quality that blows the Bose or any other noise cancelling headphones I've tried out of the water. Being able to cup the right headphone to pause the noise cancelling to listen to people talking to you without taking off the headphone is a pretty cool feature.

Aesthetically, I prefer how the Bose looks, but then again I purchased this for the audio and noise-cancelling properties, not how it looks. The touch controls on the right earpiece took a bit to get used to, but quickly became second nature.

Being able to charge via USB-C is a plus as someone who has a Galaxy S8 and a Nintendo Switch, as I can use the same cable. It also lets you charge the headphones via Quick Charge. While I can't speak to it's longevity, the headphones seem to be high quality, and I don't notice any discernible issue with the headband - something that I understand the previous models suffered from.

Overall, I am extremely impressed by the WH1000XM3, and it will easily become my every day carry headphones.
