Great Movie. The product arrived and worked as expected. This is what I expected and received.
I would do business again under these terms as long as the price does NOT go up.

HASH(0x96abfee8) out of 5 stars A wonderful character study of a teacher who cared at a time when teachers could still make a difference Aug. 16 2015
By Kytka Hilmar-Jezek - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
Based on the true story of a high school math teacher, Stand and Deliver is a 1988 American drama film about the life and teaching experiences of Jaime Escalante which takes you into the classroom and teachers boardroom to watch the dynamics of teachers who can make a difference and those both in support and against them. Edward James Olmos plays the teacher and Lou Diamond Phillips plays one of the students who is torn between wanting to learn and hanging out with his gang buddies.

The story takes us through many of the student's personal challenges and obstacles that they face as a result of growing up in East L.A. at the time. Some families are old fashioned, others give little guidance and so forth. You get a feeling for what the teacher is up against, but at the same time, to act on that feeling is what some of the other teachers at the school did and therefore they pre-judged these kids and never put in that much effort. Olmos' character cares about his students and passionately teaches them through not only his experience and mathematical aptitude, but through heart and soul. He understands them and wants to give them what an education should be, a ticket to better opportunities in life.

In December 2011, Stand and Deliver was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, which is fantastic because this is a story that should be told, again and again. Yet at the same time, watching the movie now seemed quite dated and I know that a teacher like the one Olmos portrayed cannot exist in today's school system, where teachers cannot stray from the common core or what the government has decided works for all children, regardless of any differences they have. Watching this film made me realize that it is most likely preserved as an example of what teachers used to look like, and that made me very sad for the children in schools today.

(Note: I may have a biased view here as I am the author of "School Sucks: How To Hack Your Child's Education by Unschooling and Saying 'No More' to School" but my views for the book come because teachers like John Taylor Gatto and Jaime Escalante cannot exist in today's system and that is truly heartbreaking.)

HASH(0x96913abc) out of 5 stars the hero magically turns them into brilliant math wizzes July 19 2014
By shopper1 - Published on Amazon.com

Just another movie about a heroic teacher who saves the Savage Teenagers. This time, the hero magically turns them into brilliant math wizzes. Every time I watch this movie, I wonder if their lives would have been just as good or better without him. Some of them had good job connections already in their communities. I wonder if they really became great scientists...or if they just went back to the jobs they already had through their families: working for the car companies, unions, and restaurants.

HASH(0x9690cd5c) out of 5 stars Stand & Deliver April 26 2011

Excellent movie that shows how perseverance and caring can over come so many negative things. I was truly touched by the dedication of Mr. Escalante in his belief that success can happen if you put your mind to it. I highly recommend this movie. Wish there were more teachers as dedicated as Mr. Escalante was.
HASH(0x968e8318) out of 5 stars Encouraging for teachers and students with negative attitudes Nov. 22 2011

I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie. If there is a teacher reading this with a negative attitude thinking your students don't have it in them to do well, so you figure why bother? Well, watch this. If you are a teacher and have a group of students who think they can't have a future because of their culture, watch this and be encouraged to rise up to the challenge to be the one that can make a difference in their life or in your life. Of course I'm not suggesting you work yourself into a heart attack; however, it can be done in the regular scheduled class periods, barring special needs. This could be an inspirational movie too many.
