Product Description

Review

"Spencer's journey-and it certainly is a worldly, inspirational journey -- comes to life as he recounts the hills and valleys of his life. A fine mixture of humour and sincere storytelling, Standing Tall closely follows a young man's life who wanted more than just material possessions -- he wanted to have an impact." (Vancouver Sun 2011-10-08)

About the Author

Born with a genetic disease that caused the muscles in his legs not to work, Spencer West had both legs amputated just below his pelvis at the age of 5. He found his calling as a motivational speaker, and now speaks candidly to teens about overcoming stereotyping and bullying, about finding meaning and happiness in a material world, and how he never lost the hope or courage needed to mount personal obstacles. Spencer now works with Me to We Speakers and lives in Toronto.

Well written and interesting story of Spencer West who was born with almost no legs at all. He obviously has a wonderful family who was very supportive during his life, especially his mother. Mr. West has a cheerful, cope-with-anything attitude that is very uplifting. He has no chip on his shoulders. The book goes into a lot of detail about his period at school etc. and briefly touches on the few surgeries he has had. It did not mention anything about what it is like to walk every day on his hands - it says he was shorter than everyone else, but does not say anything about how, if at all, he protected his hands while walking on them, or whether the weight on them put too much load on his elbows, or what he is sitting on when upright - is it a pad, or just the tails of his shirt? People, myself included, will be curious about those things. However, it is an interesting and motivational story for all of us, and a book worth purchasing.

HASH(0x99f99ba0) out of 5 stars This Man is a Hero March 7 2012
By Kristan Norvig - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Spencer West is a shining example of all that the human spirit can be, can do. His story is one of overcoming a very difficult situation not only to survive, but to thrive and to lead others on to find their own greatness. In "Standing Tall", he tells the story of his life from his birth up until his current work with Me to We. I've had the great pleasure to see one of his (live) talks, and his enthusiasm, great good humor, joie de vivre, and playfulness shine through the words in his book as brightly as they do when you see him in person. I would recommend this book to anyone wrestling with the difficulties of being human.

I went to high school with Spencer and never knew his whole story. I am thankful to learn more about my friend and see what an amazing life he has made for himself. This is a story that shows you should never give up and you can accomplish what you want to if you try hard enough and give yourself a chance. Love you Spencer :)

HASH(0x9a12a45c) out of 5 stars For older readers, too. July 8 2012

I am 58. I knew Spencer when he was a child and am still an acquaintance. I read this book and am very moved. Even at an older age, I wonder what my "calling" is for the rest of my life. Spencer's life journey and self discovery makes me look inward and outward at the rest of my life journey. Great job, Spencer. You are a wonder and an example for all of us. Terri

Throughout his life Spencer overcame adversity, controversy and his own demons with strength and a smile. He's shown he's in good company among heroes be they super, Greek or common man.
