I read some of the Star Trek Gold Key comics as a kid. The stories are mainly hokey, but I loved the art by Alberto Giolitti. Today's licensed comic books generally don't feature such detailed, polished illustrative work. The Dark Horse edition is a welcome indulgence in nostalgia and a better reproduction than the earlier Checker trade paperbacks.

HASH(0x9f238654) out of 5 stars Thumbs up from biased, aging fanboy Dec 29 2014

Some people don't care for these early Trek comics, but I love them. They seem to have been made free from any editorial constraints from Roddenberry/Paramount, so there is a great freedom in the writing (that sometimes results in situations/dialogue that are inconsistent with the show). But these stories, like the Bantam novels, seem to have flown in under the radar because no one knew at the time that Star Trek would be such a hit.

The stories are actually legitimate sci-fi -- not necessarily sophisticated, but interesting, and often more creative than other later Trek fiction.

The covers from this period were photo collages at first, then painted. It is rare to see paintings in comics today.

I intend to collect all the volumes in this series. I had most the original gold key comics, but needed money. I have the three original issues.
