"Hunters: Battle for the Arena" is a novel by Mark Oshiro, tie-in to the game Star Wars: Hunters, a 4 vs 4 fast-paced battle game. I was really curious how they were going to explain the game and it is really a good setup.
Sometime after the Empire's fall, a Hutt has purchased an entire planet and setup a sports complex including a battle arena and Huttball fields. The main character of the novel, a woman named Rieve, has just arrived to Vespaara, trying to find a new life after leaving Corellia and Nar Shadaa. She is somewhat Force-sensitive and receives an old lightsaber from the arena manager.
At first her impulsiveness and lack of focus gets her in bad standing with her fellow arena hunters. Little by little we see improvement and a glimpse to her past.
Finally, what she has been running away catches up with her on the Hutt planet, and she will have to learn to trust if she wants to confront her past.
It is a very standard novel, predictable albeit entertaining, and new Star Wars sports are always welcome, such as Huttball.

An exciting book based on the game Star Wars: Hunters!
On the planet Vespaara lies the Arena―a series of battlefields where fighters known as Hunters face off in teams to compete in front of roaring crowds. Newest to their ranks is Rieve, a Force-sensitive orphan from Corellia with abilities she can barely control, and a past she desperately wants to leave behind. But Rieve gets off to a rocky start, strugging with her lack of confidence both inside the Arena and with her fellow Hunters. And when a mysterious stranger begins stalking the Arena, Rieve fears her troubled past has finally caught up with her….

My review for Dork Side of the Force:
"With all the hype for Jedi: Battle Scars, it was easy to miss another video game tie-in novel that was released on the same day — Star Wars Hunters: Battle for the Arena. And while the game it’s based on has yet to come out, the middle-grade novel penned by Mark Oshiro has just as much action and thrills as it does world-building.”
“Some of the best parts of this middle-grade novel come when Rieve finally realizes it’s possible and important to open yourself up and let others have your back. Your family — found or otherwise — is there for you on your best days and your worst. Though not a Jedi, Rieve also learns the crucial lesson of embracing, not trying to control, her emotions.”
“Without having played the game, it’s hard to say how good a job Battle for the Arena does with connecting to the universe, characters, and vibes of Star Wars Hunters. But as a standalone novel, for now, it’s a seriously fun Star Wars story with essential lessons about teamwork, found family, and embracing your own emotions.”

I was not sure what to expect from this book, but I enjoyed it all the way through. I don't care that it is probably for younger readers, and the revenge story was a bit overdone, but even that I'd explained at the end.
Rieve is new to the planet Vespaara, but tgat is not going to stop her from becoming a Hunter. Part role-playing, part wargames, and all action. Though she is a tough girl, she has another edge. She can sense things before they happen, move things and people by thinking about it. Yes, she is Force-sensitive. However, she has little control and even less training. Will she be able to control the force, or will it destroy she and those around her.
This is a great story about finding yourself and what you are really looking for. The story takes place shortly after the fall of the Empire and creation of the New Republic. As much as I have found the Jedi to be watered down in the Disney era, I like the way the force is used here and Rieve's unknown struggle between the two sides of it.
No big names make an appearance in this book, but it does not need it. I would love to see more of these characters either in the main Star Wars universe or even a follow-up to this story.
