I've only recently heard of McDougall's work and so decided to start with this book.
It is a great introduction to plant-based nutrition and demonstrates why human beings are best suited to eat a diet based on starches and other plant foods. The book covers everything from what human beings have predominantly eaten historically, to what causes disease, to our basic nutritional requirements. It also includes information on the safety of supplements and a huge section of recipes.
I love the fact that the author also discusses some of the environmental issues with eating animal products.
Great read. It's very complementary to Fuhrman's "Eat to Live." For anyone interested in learning more about plant-based nutrition and the links between animal foods and disease, I recommend reading both books together.

Thank you to Dr John McDougall for another excellent book on nutrition and it's profound effect on health. What I always notice is that those espousing a plant-strong way of eating are slim and fit looking. That speaks volumes! The recipes are much appreciated as well! It really does work! We have lost 20 lbs each and are enjoying a huge new variety of foods. The cravings for fat and meat have disappeared. How can you NOT be pleased to be back in charge of your health, instead of floating down the river toward the falls, powerless to turn the boat around?

Saw a review of this book and as I already have used Dr McDougall's methods to successfully stop my diabetes 2 symptoms, it was a no-brainer to get this book. It lives up to my expectations and is a must read for anyone who a) is struggling with heart disease/diabetes/hypertension etc.and/or b) wants to lose weight.

Great book if you are considering to go to a starch & plant base diet. My husband and I have been doing it about 90 % and his cholesterol is almost normal, first time in 15 years. We sleep better at night and are feeling very good. I have lost 12 lbs and he has lost 25 since July. I truly think this is much easier then I thought it would be. Definitely much healthier! He`s been on pill for 20 years. The objective is to reverse completely and get off the pills. Still need a few months for that. Amazing book, very informative yet written in a way that is easy to understand. If you want to know why certain animal products are unhealthy, this book is a great resource. Dr. McDougall debunks a lot of myths and provides references to back up those points. He also addresses concerns that people usually bring up when discussing a vegan diet such as, "Where will I get my protein and calcium?" and , "Isn't fish oil healthy?". This book was very helpful while I was transitioning to a vegan diet.

I found myself picking up this book everytime I had a few minutes to spare. The book is well written and easy to understand. complex medical information is explained in terms everyone can understand. The information contradicts almost everything that you may have heard about the way you should eat; however, once you are done reading it you will be convinced that Dr. McDougall knows what he is talking about. He is living proof and there are many examples of people who have prospered by following this way of life. Anyone who has been prescribed a life of pill taking must read this book.

What Mr. McDougall describes is not a fad diet - it is a lifestyle. His books have saved lives. If you have someone you love who is sick and needs help - give them this book. In fact everyone should read it. It is written well and it has a lot of good information and some new discussions. The only thing I dislike about this book is the abundance of tofu recipes - and really that is just my personal preference.
