Product Description

On the designer heels of the hit miniseries nominated for ten Primetime Emmy Awards comes Season One of the stylish series The Starter Wife available on DVD! Primetime Emmy Award nominee Debra Messing returns as Hollywood ex-wife Molly Kagen, who must reinvent her life and take on new challenges as a single mom in Tinseltown. Supported by her friends – played by an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Judy Davis (returning in her Primetime Emmy Award-winning role), David Alan Basche and Chris Diamantopoulos – and motivated by her skills as a writer, Molly learns to say “I do” to her new world. Gigi Levangie Grazer, author of the New York Times bestselling novel on which the miniseries was based, returns as an executive producer on The Starter Wife, the funny and uplifting show that has viewers cheering for Molly to make it in Hollywood!

Drawing from her years in Hollywood, Gigi Lavangie Grazer, wife of producer Brian Grazer, penned The Starter Wife, which inspired the limited series that launched this USA Network dramedy. Author Molly Kagan (Will and Grace's Debra Messing) continues to forge a new life for herself after her divorce from Kenny (David Alan Basche, taking over from Ken Jacobson), a studio exec. In between petty battles with the high-powered wives who disdain her less affluent lifestyle and attempts to get back into the publishing game, the designer-clad mom pals around with Joan (Emmy winner Judy Davis), a recovering alcoholic, and Rodney (Chris Diamantopoulos), an interior designer. Her social circle expands when she befriends Liz (Danielle Nicolet), a pathologically possessive pitcher's spouse, and Zach (Hart Bochner), a writing instructor and possible love interest... if only Molly hadn't sworn off men.

So, while Rodney and Joan have affairs with actors--one in the closet, the other in recovery--Molly turns to screenwriting and a possible no-strings fling of her own. Fantasy sequences parodying hits like The Godfather and Body Heat represent her deepest fears. If the show's sole season gets off to a shaky start, it finds its footing once the central trio becomes more fully rounded and relatable Though the rest of the year doesn't hit the same comedic heights as Will and Grace, Messing still comes on like a modern-day Rosalind Russell and The Starter Wife makes for light and frothy fun. In their commentary on two episodes, producers Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriot discuss the changes between the series and the miniseries, like the disappearance of Miranda Otto’s Cricket (just as Jacobson joined the cast of House, she joined the short-lived Cashmere Mafia). McGibbon, Parriot, Messing, and Bochner also comment on the 10 fantasy sequences. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

You must forget Will & Grace when you watch the Starter Wife. Kiss Grace goodbye, this aint her. Messing shows how she can take the lead and keep this mini series moving. She plays an ex-wife of a Hollywood studio boss starts her life after her divorce

The supporting cast of Judy Davis, Joe Mantegna, Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), and Peter Jacobson (Transformers & the Lost Room)mesh with Messing. Mantegna best scene is hom in drag-DONT MISS IT

On the whole, the mini series, which is based upon the novel by Hollywood Wife Gigi Levangie Grazer, the wife of Producer/director Brian Grazer, is a great story. It ranks up there will Jackie Collins's Hollywood series of books and movies

Debra Messing and supporting cast/ensemble cast is absolutely stunning in this romantic comedy about a woman who faces her life after realizing she was just a "starter wife" for her up and coming famous husband. As he moves on to younger and more beautiful women, she must learn to adjust and eventually flower into who she really is.

Excellent, Smart, Sophisticated, Entertaining!!

HASH(0xa2fbe42c) out of 5 stars A Pleasant Series July 5 2007
By Deborah B. Miley - Published on Amazon.com

This show wasn't mindblowing and it wasn't super original, but it had heart, something I think is missing from TV today. It surprised me that I could sit and just get lost in this show and its quirky characters. Debra Messing is a great actress and I love the fact that Anika Noni Rose played the security guard for the community. If you haven't seen this show in it's original network run, please pick up a copy or rent it from Netflix. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

HASH(0xa2e9ebd0) out of 5 stars Can a guy review this without choking? Sept. 19 2007

Sure. It's not bad. This is not a show I'd would have considered on my own or even remembered to watch. My wife was watching & I stopped for a moment & stayed because Debra Messing is so excellent- fashion, comedy & drama. It's not marketed to us 50+ males but is a perfect, summer mini-series. It went to dvd pretty quick in case you missed it. I'd recommend it. Debra's scenes with Joe Montegna are the best.

HASH(0xa2ea2a98) out of 5 stars A cream-puff of a miniseries Oct. 25 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Starter Wife," even though it isn't the type of show I usually watch. It was a delight -- lots of chuckles, with enough serious subject matter to keep it from being a dramatized version of the Shopping Channel. Deborah Messing is perfect as the "starter wife" who's dumped by her studio honcho husband and thinks her life is over. Not so -- a new life is just beginning. Messing and her small coterie of loyal friends are great, and the hunk she finds on the beach is a feast for the eyes. The miniseries is great fun, guaranteed to bring a smile.
