Boston, 1868: The dawn of the Gilded Age, an era of burgeoning commerce and invention, of unimaginable new fortunes and lavish excess—for some. Born into dismal poverty, young Nell Sweeney scratches by on her wits and little else until fortune blesses her with a position as nursery governess to the fabulously wealthy Hewitts. But she soon learns that ugly secrets lurk beneath the surface of their gold-plated world.
The Hewitts’ eldest son, William, a former Union Army battle surgeon and the black sheep of the family, was reported to have died three years before in a notorious Confederate prison camp. But one snowy February afternoon, his parents learn that he is, in fact, still alive—and in jail for having murdered a man while intoxicated on opium. Infuriated by his son’s deception and convinced of his guilt, August Hewitt forbids his wife from coming to Will’s aid, so she begs Nell to help exonerate him. Nell finds that she must delve into the kind of dark and treacherous underworld she thought she’d left far behind if she is to unearth the truth before the hangman’s noose tightens around William Hewitt’s throat.

“What a thoroughly charming book! A beautiful combination of entertaining characters, minute historical research, and a powerful evocation of time and place. I’m very glad there will be more to come.”
—New York Times bestselling author Barbara Hambly
“P.B. Ryan captures an authentic flavor of post-Civil War Boston as she explores that city’s dark underbelly and the lingering after-effects of the war. The atmosphere is that of The Alienist, but feisty Irish nursemaid Nell Sweeney is a more likable protagonist. I look forward to seeing her in action again.”
—New York Times bestselling author Rhys Bowen
“Still Life with Murder is a skillfully written story of intrigue and murder set during Boston’s famous Gilded Age. Nell Sweeney, governess and part-time nurse, is a winning heroine gifted with common sense, grit, and an underlying poignancy. With its rich sense of place and time and a crisp, intelligent plot, readers will speed through this tale and be clamoring for more.”
—Bestselling author Earlene Fowler
“Utterly absorbing. Vividly alive characters in a setting so clearly portrayed that one could step right into it. A very clever plot in which each clue is clearly offered and yet the identity of the murderer is a complete surprise. I look forward to many more books...”
—Bestselling author Roberta Gellis
“If you like fast moving, accurately drawn, historical mysteries, you won’t go wrong by trying Still Life with Murder.”
—Reviewing the Evidence
“This debut mystery is a winner, with a feisty heroine, a colorful historical backdrop and a strong mystery rife with complexities. An ideal blend of history and mystery.”

This is a well written suspense novel clearly portraying the post US civil war era in Boston. The author has researched the times, social life and locations, presented them as a flowing commentary such that the reader feels like they are actually on scene. I recommend this book to all persons interested in an enjoyable read that comes without the sex and mayhem so prevalent in most novels available today.
The characters are all unique and the plot deceptive throughout. The reader is kept guessing throughout as to the real truth. Nell is particularly interesting as she relentlessly ferrets out the truth, in her seemingly naive manner.

I've read a few of the blurbs of books later in the series, and am pleased to see that it seems you don't have to read this one in order to enjoy later ones, as different characters and mysteries are used.
I've been put off reading crime novels, desperately trying to find diamonds amongst the novels that are anything from dross to hohum, and seem to try to follow some ridiculous fashion of type or setting. This one has restored my enthusiasm for the genre.
The new mother is,a serving girl in a large household and the lady of the house decides to adopt the baby and asks Nell to be the baby,s Nanny and help to raise her. So begins a adventure that will take her to the seedy brothels, opium dens and murder. A good story that keeps you guessing to the enjoyable end
I have to admit that I know very little of American history, but even so I loved the atmosphere that these books conjured up. There was almost a little of the Sherlock Holmes atmosphere to these, with Nell visiting opium dens and poking around the dark corners of mid 19th century Boston, rather than Victorian London. There were the odd moments when I did think, really, surely that would never have happened? (Would an upper class lady randomly decide to employ a young Irish girl she's never met before as a governess?) But they didn't detract from the story, and indeed if they hadn't been allowed to happen, there would be little story here to tell.
The main characters are immensely likeable, Nell herself is delightful. The second I finished this the first time around I had to buy the next in the series to see what would happen, and second time round I hungrily devoured all of the books in the series in the space of days. I know I'll be back to read them again in the future, and think that it's highly likely that this series may become one of my all time favourite reads. I only hope that P.B. Ryan isn't going to keep us waiting too long for the spin off series.
It's a crime. It has a female protagonist who comes from the wrong side of the tracks and has a pretty questionable and pretty fascinating past that I really hope to read more of. It is set in Boston in the post-Civil War years, but it shows a Boston we rarely see - the back streets, the opium dens, the slums and the prostitutes. A sleazy, seamy Boston, that is contrasted brilliantly with the upper-class Boston we know from the likes of Henry James. It has a great selection of characters, all flawed. And it has, slow-burning in the background, a bit of romance.
So many times I pick up a new-to-me author who writes books full of my favourite ingredients, and I'm disappointed. Not this time. This story kept me turning the pages when I should have been writing or sleeping. It didn't matter that I guessed some of the plot, because it wasn't primarily the plot (good as it was) which kept me going, it was the characters Nell is fab - did I say that? Will is fab. Boston is a star in it's own right, gliterry and gaudy and sleazy as it is. It was - well, fab. I've already downloaded the next one. Highly recommended, and probably more 4.5 stars than 4, which is a lot for me!(
I thought this was a great read, kept me guessing till the end with a fine central protagonist in Nell Sweeney, and an intriguing central relationship with the good doctor. There are five more of these I think, and they will all be in my TBR pile.
