One evening, Tom comes home from work and finds that Karen is not there. The door is unlocked, her purse with her wallet and lipstick are on the bed and it looks as though she was preparing dinner. Tom immediately calls the police and when he hangs up, two officers are at the door. They tell Tom that Karen was in a car crash and is in hospital. Tom rushes to the hospital and is met by Dr. Fulton. He tells Tom that Karen has a head injury that may cause amnesia for a short time. There were no alcohol or drugs found. She was racing red lights in the worst part of town. Who was she running from? She is educated, well spoken and not the kind of person who would do that kind of thing. Tom and the officers are in the room with Karen. The officers are questioning her, but Karen has amnesia and doesn't remember a thing or is she lying? Officer Fleming tells her that she could be charged with reckless driving and that's a serious offense in New York. It's a crime and she may have to do jail time and have a criminal record. Karen asks the Officer if she should hire a lawyer and the Officer says yes. Before leaving, Officer Fleming hands her a piece of paper. It's a ticket for reckless driving. Tom thinks that there has to be a reason for her actions.
Brigid is Karen's neighbour and best friend. She lives across the street. She is married to Bob, the owner of Cruikshank funeral homes. Their marriage is in trouble, because of her failure to have a child. She's lonely and she spends her time sitting and knitting in front of the picture window watching the goings-on across the street. One wonders why she is so interested in her neighbour's business.
The police seem to be suspicious of Karen's actions and think that she was up to no good. Tom doesn't believe it. Her best friend Brigid is not so sure.
A Stranger in the House is Shari Lapena's second thriller. Her writing is so well crafted and razor-sharp. She draws you in from the very first page and keeps you hooked until the end. Her debut book, The Couple Next Door, was a New York and an international bestseller. I enjoyed both books immensely and look forward to her next book.
