Now, aside from all the hassle, I like the chairs, they are not heavy, but they won't blow away, and they are comfortable. They are not supposed to rust but I got covers for them just to be safe. I would have given them five stars, except for the poor service from Strathwood.
I looked at getting the chairs re-powder coated but was quoted prices in the $200 to $250 range per chair.
Needless to say I started to look for replacement chairs. After a lot of searching I came across these and thought no way the quality would be any good for the price, but after reading the reviews I decided to give these a shot. I purchased 8 replacement chairs and they arrived FEDEX ground in 2 days, as mentioned the packing is amazing and thank goodness I have a cardboard recycling dumpster in the shopping center close to my home or it would have taken months to dispose of in my regular recycling.
All the chairs where undamaged and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. As others have noted - a lot of silver in the finish much more than the pictures would leave you to believe. Also using the cushions is a must, you cannot sit on these chairs without the cushions. They were not designed to be used without cushions; the seat supports are very flat and meant to support cushions not you rump.
I am really amazed that Amazon can sell these for about $100 a chair with no shipping charge. I know they are made in China - but really - the manufacturing cost - cushion cost - packing cost alone have to be expensive - shipping from China - warehousing - free shipping to your door.... I looked at regular sling type chairs at Lowes and Home Depot that cost about this much. Only time will tell how they hold up but right now if I get 3 or 4 years out of them I will be ahead of the game. I give then a solid 9 out of 10 for value.
Strathwood St. Thomas Cast-Aluminum Deep-Seating Arm Chair, Set of 2
I got these because everything else (vinyl, wood) rotted in our hot sun after just a couple of years. Cast aluminum furniture is expensive, but I thought these were reasonably priced. I am very happy with them! I got a lot of pieces, all came well packed and mostly assembled. The quality is really good, and they look great. The do get HOT in our mid-day sun, but we aren't outside using them at that time of day anyway.
The chairs are sturdy and comfortable for all size people. The cushions are plain, which is good for me in that I can add any colorful pillows I want. However, there are two selections for the dining table chairs (links above), with a $10 difference in price. I can't find in the description what the difference between the two is. One had a weight limit posted, so I got that set (the more expensive one).
I wanted the end tables, but didn't want the ice bucket insert. So I put a plant in it and it looks great! I may do the same thing with the fire pit, if I decide not to use it as a fire pit. (You don't need to do anything, though, as the insert on these tables comes with a matching cover piece that is really pretty...)
I would definitely recomment this.
3 years later… I still love the chairs, but the cushions look awful and are full of mold that I can't scrub off. I am going to look for a darker color to keep stains/mold from showing. I even sprayed the cushions with a stain resistant protector.
I recommend the chairs, but suggest that the manufacturer go with a darker color or make them mold resistant.
