Despite that the manufacturer claims no solutions are necessary, you can certainly apply them to the cloth. I won't make recommendations as to which to use, as it seems to be a touchy subject... but if you do wipe your strings with any cleaning solution, you can apply it to this cloth, and if you have two, use another to remove the excess.
I have a dozen guitars, this little fellow makes cleaning and servicing them quicker and easier. I used to use a paper towel wet with a spritz of glass cleaner to wipe the strings down after playing (then dress with some sort of light oil to prevent rust). I haven't used any cleanser at all with the String Cleaner - I just clamp it on and pull it up and down the guitar several times, and I'm sure both sides of the string are clean. I still dress the strings with light oil after cleaning to ensure no rust.
Several reviews mention that it gets tight up near the first fret - yes, it does - but nothing problematic. It takes minimal effort to gently force the device to clean the strings all the way to the nut. All of my guitars are set with exceptionally low action and I can get the String Cleaner to clean the entire first-position without a problem. It's washable, too. I put it in a lingerie bag and throw it in the wash machine with clothes once every few weeks, then leave it in the sun on a window sill to dry. It comes out good as new every time.
If you're as detailed as I am about the care and cleaning of your stringed instruments, this is a nice little time-saver to add to your toolbox.
I thought opening it to use was going to be problematic, just pushed my thumbnail against the latches on the edge with a little downward pressure and it popped right open. I like the fact it's washable. I've used it on an Ibanez semi-hollow body, an Epiphone SG and a Epiphone Les Paul. It worked well on them with little effort. I like having clean looking strings and fingers when I'm done playing. Great item, Thank you ToneGear! :-)
Oh, if this helps the strings to last longer than that is just another plus!
