This series ruined my reading life. Seriously once I started I couldnt read anything else. Trust me I tried reading other books multiple times but just couldnt bring myself to care about anything until I finished this series. Poison Study quickly became one of my favorite trilogies. The magic system was fascinating and I was constantly compelled to keep reading. Each book had a entertaining plot and a fast pace but the first book was my favorite followed closely by the second. There was unexpected diversity which I absolutely loved. The gender swap and the people of color were a great addition.

The main character Yelena perspective completely immersed me in the story. I really appeciated that she was a person of color. Her horse Kiki was amazing and I thought her romantic relationship was so heart warming. I also enjoyed the age gap in the romantic relationship because it was something I could relate to and different from what I usually read. All the the adversity Yelena had to overcome was really entertaining. Shes such a unique and engaging character to read about. I also enjoyed most of the characters in this trilogy.

The Commander and Valek were both fascinating characters. I just couldnt get enough of Valek. I also really liked Yelenas friendship with Ari and Janko. I wasnt a big fan of her brother Lief attitude but the sibling rivelary kept things interesting and there was some sweet moments between them. Her relationship with her family was very touching. I never trusted Cahil and Rose but they were a great addition to the story. It amazing how many great side characters we get in this story, like Irys, Moon Man, Bain and so many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series. Thank you M Snyder. March 26 2017

I very much enjoyed this heroine who just kept swinging and thinking and despite other people who flip flopped in their loyalty, realized she would rather go down trying to do the right thing than give in to evil or to suggestions or orders from even well meaning friends. A great to read Thanks.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Series - Definitely A Must-Buy! Sept. 24 2014

I have ALWAYS loved this author. I actually read her Glass series before this one (it takes place in the same world but after the events in this series) and I loved that one so much that I looked into Maria V. Snyder's other books. When I found the study series, even just the premise immefiately sucked me in. This was a girl who lived in a world of magic and fighting, whom we first meet inside a prison cell. She learns how to test for poisons in the food that the Commander of Ixia will eat. And thats just the first few pages of the first book! This series is PACKED with an amazing adventure for our heroine, but it's not as lighthearted as the word "adventure" makes it sound. There are a million twists and turns in her quest, and life-threatening situations behind every corner. Being a prisoner and then a food taster leaves her with enemies both earned and inherited as she begins to be haunted by her past, and harmed by her new job. Again, this is still only the first book!
I don't want to give any more spoilers however, so I won't talk about plot anymore. On to characters- Yelena is an incredible character: strong, capable, determined, brave, smart, and loveable. We see how amazing that is as we start to get more details of her past, and learn that it is that she can still be so strong and brave. Valek and the Commander are also very strong and interesting characters, and Ari and Janco are incredibly loveable and hilarious companions.
Overall, this series is definitely highly recommended from me, and I also would recommend checking out her other series afterwards.
5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning writing, world-building, and characters Aug. 30 2016

This series is almost perfect, in every way. So often fantasy writers have either great plots, interesting characters, or skilled writing... but almost never have all three. Pacing and details make you really feel you're transported into another world when you're reading. No hard-to-pronounce names, as fantasy authors love to do (which I actually find distract me from the story, wondering how I am supposed to pronounce them).
If you love Leigh Bardugo, read this series. If you like bad@$$ heroines with their own lives to lead, read this series. If you appreciate GOT's detailed descriptions and witty dialog, read this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word: Amazing! Feb. 17 2014

This series pulled me in from page one. You can't help but fall in love with Maria Snyder's characters. You have Yelena, who you follow as she finds her place in life, from being a prisoner awaiting execution, a food taster wondering if the next bite will be her last, a strong magician trying to control her magic, to a powerful Soulfinder whose found her purpose. Valek, an assassin with quite a past, finds his purpose beside Yelena despite a rocky start to their relationship. Also Yelena had Ari, Janco, Irys, Leif, Dax, and many others to show her she couldn't go through life alone. They also show her that though her magic could be used for evil, she shouldn't fear it for the fact that she used it for good.
I absolutely loved this series and I recommend it for anyone who loves magic and a story with twists and turns at every corner.
5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected but magical story Sept. 24 2012

"The Study Series" is definately one of the best series I have read in really much time. Since the beginning, you are willing to know more about Yelena's past and how she ended at jail. As the story continues and we start reading about her life change and the decisions she makes, we can get to know who she really is. But we are not even close in getting to really know her until we get to the final chapters of Poison Study. There we are able to know about her past and who she really is, and we start answering the questions that arose since the first chapters. With Magic Study we can discover about her past and her confusion with her new life, but we get to know the true Yelena until Fire Study, where all of her fears are confronted and the mysteries revealed.
It is such an amazing story which keeps readers thinking about it all day long, willing to know more about it. It is full of suspense, mystery, love, magic, friendship, trust and secrets, but mostly of adventure. I totally recommend it to fantasy lovers, to people willing to read a really good story and for those who want a series that does not allow the reader to stop reading. Maria Snyder gave us an amazing story!
