This review is for the hardcover edition measuring 9 1/2 X 6 1/4 having 206 pages and 16 photo pages.
The author presents the facts in an elegant and understandable way....and then , more or less, leaves us high and dry!
The subtitle of this book should be "The FANTASTIC story that could have been".
Although at the end of the book he solicits the opinions of several ex submariners even THEY seem to be reluctant to offer anything more than what DIDN'T happen, rather than speculating on what DID happen.
I had hoped that some 56 years after the fact ( at the time of writing ) the author would have had access to documents released by the government and would be able to enlighten us as to the real cause of the sinking of Affray but in this area he seems to be lacking ANY ambition at all.
All in all I was disappointed with this book.
60 years after the fact IF someone were going to invest the time and effort to rekindle the Affray sinking one would hope that it would be done ONLY if FRESH and NEW information was to be presented that would at least ATTEMPT to clear up what was the cause.
I personally think I know what the CORRECT sequence of events were that led to the sinking and if I am able to access the necessary documents I might write of it some day.
This book could have been so much more...given a little more effort and imagination by the author but sadly it's nothing more than a rehash of the same information available in 1951 and even sadder the author doesn't seem tot have the gumption or the imagination to come up with a REALISTIC possible sequence of events that led to the tragic death of 75 submariners.
LIGHTLY recommended ONLY AS A STARTING POINT.

In April 1951, the disappearance of HM submarine Affray knocked news of the Korean War and Festival of Britain from the front pages of national newspapers. Affray had gone to sea on a routine peacetime simulated war patrol in the English Channel. She radioed her last position at 21.15 hours on April 16th, 30 miles south of the Isle of Wight—and preparing to dive. This was the last signal ever received from the submarine. When divers eventually discovered Affray, they found her resting upright on the sea bottom with no obvious signs of damage to her hull. Hatches were closed tight and emergency buoys were still in their casings. It was obvious that whatever had caused Affray to sink and end the lives of all on board had occurred quickly. Fifty-six years later, in this compelling maritime investigation, Alan Gallop uses previously top secret documents, interviews with experts, and contemporary news sources to explore how and why Affray became the last British submarine lost at sea—and possibly the greatest maritime mystery since the Marie Celeste. This is a fascinating recreation of the last mission of this doomed submarine, the effect it had on the families of those who perished, and on British public opinion at the time.

THE AFFRAY SUBMARINE MYSTERY

I downloaded this title onto my Kindle.
The reading of this book is close to my heart as one of the crew members was my uncle Norman Temple. Although I was born after the tragedy the shock lived with his brothers and sisters including my mum for the rest of their lives as at the time of the loss he was the youngest of sixteen children.
The details in this book has given me so much more information that I had not heard before. But unfortunately I have been unable to view any of the illustrations or photos listed in the contents list.

I served in HMS Dolphin (submarine Base) and HMS Vernon (Diving School). We know where Affray is now. This book helped me to fill a few gaps in my Knowledge. I dive in an "S" class Submarine and it must have been hell for these men, rest in peace.

A Clear and Honest Account that presents all available information.

I have a personal involvement in this disaster as my father was one of the "lucky" ones who was taken off the Affray's crew just before she sailed. Therefore I read this book scrupulously. The Author has thoroughly done his research and presented it honestly, with great detail. I thoroughly recommend this book.

Very well researched ; but it needed an eagle-eye (like mine) to proof-read before publication. Naval is slightly different from navel !! And rope measurement is by its circumference, not "its width". But the drama and mystery were well researched.
